Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
or not?
Yes I know I can't kill any from my couch but I also don't wanna be out there if the success rate is next to nothing. What do you guys think? Conditions: 55 degrees, light 4-5mph wind, steady light rain |
RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
Deer will move in a light rain. Will move even more right after the rain.

RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
I would wait until it just before it stops, I'm hoping it will by the morning! It's best hunting just before and just after a storm! If its a good long rain?snow I would time it to be out there before its coming to an end! With all the high winds this past week I was out Friday morning when it died down and had alot of movement!

RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
keep in mind, this is not drizzle I'm talking about, and there are no breaks in the forecast. would you then still go out? got about an hour to decide.

RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
I would go out in it if you have stand close to the bedding areas now is the time to use it.
|
RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
Deer movment will increase during a LIGHT rain...........I would be in the woods.........If it is more than a light rain or the winds are high, that will stop movement til the storm subsides.

I am having the same conditions here in Minnesota today, and I will be going out in about an hour regardless of the rain. My hunting time is down to just weekends now, so I will go any chance I get. I went out early in the season, and it rained the whole time I was on stand, ( sometimes pooooooring) and that has been my best day so far this year as far as deer sightings.

These Ameristep umbrellas are real nice for hunting in the rain. They keep you AND your equipment dry. I hunted all day in the rain in Illinois last year with one of these and I saw quite a few deer. And I stayed dry and warm. My bow stayed dry too which is nice.

ORIGINAL: DropTine249 My goodness Id have been in a tree with those weather conditions. I hunted a day just like that last week, well it was steady mildly heavy rain. It rained almost the entire time I was in the woods. Had countless doe and buck up on their feet. I saw more deer that day than I ever have in the woods(not counting a field). At least 30 deer walked near my stand |
RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
I've killed several deer in constant rain. They can go inside why should you.
|
RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
I've seen alot of deer during a rain, more just afterward but you need to be there when it's raining to be there just afterward. You might jump them going in etc...
On the shot, nothing less than pefect is acceptable. Be ready and be confident. |
RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
I personally like hunting in light rain. Seems like i always see more deer on those dreary days.
|
RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
There is alot of deer movement during a light steady rain.
DONT MISS OUT ON IT! Excellent chance of catching them out of bed. |
RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
I've killed anumber of them in light rain. Depending on how hard it's coming down, remember to start your tracking before it gets washed away. I've had to find a few of them by just looking around since the blood trail was washed out.

RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
Wish the damned rain would stop long enough to go sit in the woods, what a crappy bow season.

In the rain you wont need toilet paper.:D

Ever thought of getting off of the stand and finding them? If so, during the rain is the best time.
Good luck, KP |
RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
I'll take a rainy day over a beautiful fall day any time. The deer love it (unless it's a gully wahser) and people hate it. I've probably killed 70% of my deer in rain of some sort.

RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
i had 7 does come out while i was hunting in light rain. it was about 45-50deg outside in the morningand i shot a 115 lb doe. after the rain stopped that afternoon around 3:30 my friend shot a 9 point that grossed 134" around 4:00. so i would say go huntin and see what you kill.

Light drizzle or rain are two of my favorite times to hunt whitetails. They really move here when these conditions occur. Hvy rain..shuts them down outside of the rut.

RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
I've had great success in light rain with bucks. Not heavy rain though!

RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
I know what Rob was eluding to.......but doesn't this make for a possible tough track?
|
RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
Jeff, good point.. Not sure how everyone else feels about rain and blood trails... but I have lost abear via archery many moons agoin rain due to a NON pass through.. taught me a good lesson about the importance of a hvy blood trail if your going to shoot them in the rain..

RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
I hate sunshine more than anything else.
A day of light rain and no wind is the best day possible IMO. You will see deer moving all day long. I would take only very close range shots and double lung at that. I wouldn't want to try to trail a light bleeder in the rain, that's for sure. |
RE: Waste of time hunting in a light steady rain?
Shed....ONLY reason I mention it is.....I now know that things are not always "perfect". I don't think, right now, I'd chance it. I can't speak for anyone but me.....but I've just had some things unfold that would keep me from it.
I've only hunted the rain a couple of times before....and honestly I haven't noticed anything earth-shattering as far as increased movement. Not a big deal to me to sit it out. |
