Matt was looking over my shoulder and said my shot was awesome, the arrow went exactly where I was aiming...the doe was quick...more to come. Matt had everything perfect. He knows his whitetails, his food plots and his setups. They were setup if I was there or not, just was perfect for me that time. :D

Jeff, it is a big doe, not the biggest on the property as Matt mentioned. His food plots are extrodinary and we talk stradegy for my own. We talked alot about it over breakfast. I know what I need to do. We'll compare notes. ;)

When she came in she came in watching the blind even though there hasn't been anyone in it for 6 days and she still is there usually 6 days...she's a smart one...well was. ;)

tsoc, thank you. She was a hefty one and I felt bad when Matt was dragging her...up hill....through briars to the field, by himself in the dark. RackLuster, thanks, I always like that handshake photo to and I always try to get one regardless if I'm the lucky hunter or I'm the guide which has been the case (both ways) on many occassions. ;) I don't usually get doe tags cause my "honey holes" don't necessarily need doe taken. If they did, I wouldn't hesitate to get them. I don't have problems taking doe and know they need taking, where they need it. I bought this tag for Matt's place and if I hadn't taken that doe, I don't know if I would have used it at all.

Well I lied, I made Kurt gut his...LOL

sr77, thanks so much. Rehab is slow, I think. I'm only suppose to have had 50% weight on my leg this past week. I'm doing more..sssshhhhh, this week suppose to have 75% and then 100 next week. I'm really already at 100 but I take it slow and steady and use the crutches when I should...which isn't often.

Thanks Huntingbry, you cannot actually imagine how often I thought about camo'ing the crutches. So far tho I've been able to hide them under the Pin Oak I hunt and others, like at Matt's, I hobbled into the stand without them but am not suppose to. :)

fun2hunt, thanks and your right. It was great sharing that with Matt and Matt said that is the very first one he ever witnessed and especially over the shoulder like that. That's the about the 8th deer I've taken with someone on my shoulder, usually filming just sharing. It's great and I love being the guy watching over the shoulder as well. Someone is there to help watch after the shot which is so important...more on that.

RJ (Matt)...what more can I say that you haven't but THANK you so much for the opportunity. It was a fantastic day. Your camp is awesome, your land incredible, your plots are wonderful, your dad is a very cool and welcoming father and I had a great, great time. I look forward to coming up again. Next time I'll be earlier and we'll get some sleep. ;) :D

mahoningbuck, anyone who hunts with anyone on here should treat and be treated as such. I know Matt would accomodate others the way he accomodated me. We talked about bucks and I wasn't sure if I'd pull the trigger on one and he told me he'd be pissed if I didn't. I was there for does. We made a pact.....I look at it this way. If you come hunt with me, you hunt the way I do, if I come hunt with you, I hunt the way you do. Nothing less can be expected. It's all about respect and I have no problem respecting someone younger than me when they KNOW what they are doing and practice what they preach. Kudos to Matt.

Ask Matt about me showing off some shooting just so he had some confidence in me and knew I wasn't blowing smoke. ;) [8D]



Okay, more on the shot.......

I picked up on something GR8 said, it's not so much that it was a 41 yard shot. I'm all but 100% on 40 plus yard shots, only one not hitting the animal to recovery because I aimed low on a very nervous 41 yard buck. I hit exactly where I was aiming just under that bucks brisket/heart just behind the leg. I could not believe the buck did not drop. (several years ago)

This doe was nervous...she starteds stomping and watching her fawns. She never looked at the blind during this. She was testing the air and watching her fawns. I kept ranging her, knew the exact range at all times waiting for her to turn sideways. The wind was up and my bow is very quiet and out of the blind I knew she wouldn't hear the bow but the arrow is another question.

Matt was watching over my shoulder and was actually fliming the shot...but the camera turned off. I had confidence in my shooting, Matt did too after a couple show off shots I took on his 3D deer at 55 and 60 yards....

The doe turned sideways/broadside and Matt said take her if you can....I was at full draw, 40 yard pin on the heart on a 41 yard doe. I knew if she heard the ARROW she might drop. At the shot Matt said he followed my arrow (he can elaborate) and when we both watched the arrow pass through the doe he immediately enthusiastically commented great shot, you got here, hooted and said way to go...I was a little less enthusiastic. We talked about the shot and said I was dead on, she did however move. She wasn't fast enough tho to avoid the arrow passing through her liver, top of the stomach and femoral artery. She did move, dropped some but we were actually below her as well. The arrow with a Snyper did it's job. That's a huge hole for a less than perfect shot which is always a great insurance plan. We talked it over, snuck out for the blood and had immediately blood. We knew she was down, Matt heard her but to error on the side of caution, we WAITED only to find her exactly where she was heard last.

If I did not have the confidence in the shot I would not have taken it. I and Matt had no doubt when the arrow was loosed. Shooting a bow is 90% mental. We cannot control the animal and I firmly believe we get away with alot more as far as bow noise at 40 yards than we do at 20 yards. It's not for everyone however I've had a very calm buck drop so bad I nicked his back at 19 yards. A nervous doe at 41 with a quiet bow and wind noise didn't worry me one bit.

I've read where Davidmil has had the same theory, results but again, only shoot to your own comfort zone, no further. :)

Sorry I'm just now getting around to the well-wishes good buddy, but I was hunting most of the weekend. Matt kept me up-to-date relaying texts anyway! :)I almost took one within 30 minutes of you, but was afraid she was going to take her death run across a ditch/small river with 10-foot steep banks, and I didn't especially feel like pulling her back up that by myself. I told Matt there'd be easier does.

As far as the 40-yard-shot and sound theory; you're exactly right. I've read several articles by Chuck Adams stating he believes the same thing: It's far easier for a deer to attempt to jump the string at 20 yards than it is 40... If an alarming noise happens unexpectantly close by, even we humans jump can be prone to jumping out of our skins... Move that same noise 40 yards away, and we'll turn sort of nonchalantly towards it.

Thanks also for that writing above and that human scenerio being exactly right. I've shot 4 animals at 41,42 yards, none of them reacted to the bow other than this doe, and I believe she reacted to the arrow. Thanks bud.

Rob-To reiterate what others have already said, you really are a "class act". To take the time to thank everyone individually is very thoughtful. As far as the 40 yd. shot goes, if you have put the time in to become confident at that range, go for it. I practice out to 80 yds. at least twice a week while shooting. I would never dream of taking a shot at a deer that far away, but under the right conditions, I would not hesitate at 40 yds. Congrats once again on a fine doe and a good shot.
