what should I do about this? long sorry
I was hunting on the property I was just given permision to hunt. I was warned the neighbors were jerks. One of them came into my area this morning. They were right on the edge of the property line. He started pouring corn all around. His little girls were running and screaming all over the place. My hunt was over. I got down and went over to them to talk. I wanted to ask for permision to track and retrieve from their land. He had no problem with it. Then it hit me, the reason I wasn't getting any shots was because of all that corn. He dumped 150 lb.s of it just this morning. I wanted to say "hey you are ruining my hunting location" but, I didn't. I know he plans to hunt gun season and some bow but not much. I want him to quit with the corn but I don't want to cause any problems. I know it is his land to do with as he pleases but, I can'thelp but to feel upset that I finally got a good place to hunt and he is screwing it up. All ethics aside, it is just plain rude. I haven't checked but I am pretty sure baiting is legal in Ohio. I needto read that section tonight. Any thoughts? |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
try and talk to him some more and inform him nicely that tomuch corn will make the deer go nocturnal and recommend a feeder tgat willput out asmall amont a day
besides the nocturnal thing why would it ruin your spot or is that the only reason you had i have had neighboors that i was told to be rude and they were not get to know him |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
well, if it turns out baiting is legal up there, you really got nothing you can do. I good plea from the heart is probably your best bet.that's a tough situation, can you relocate stands to move away from the property line?

nocturnal and the deer are staying away from the natural food sources. The ones I am set up on. |

Figure it out. May take some time but you'll be able to use what he's doing. How big is the land your on? Good to have plenty of different places to hunt. They come and they go. Best to have other plans.
What he's doing is legal in Ohio. |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
I guess I could offer to go in half on a feeder. What would you folks do? I know it is his decision. This is the only land that I can huntwith some one. I was planning to take my father in-law up there in the middle of Nov.He has always let me hunt his land. I thought it would bew nice to return the favor. |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
Put a stand up as close as possible to his cornpile and hunt it nonstop for a few days. Walk in about 1hr before light and make stomping noise when leaving. Make sure the deer blow as you come and go. Hunt the stand near the corn early, then move out to your food plots or trails leading to them about 9am. Once they pattern you at the corn, they'll shift back over to your food plots. Disrupt their feeding at the cornpile and they'll move back over to where they aren't being pressured, your food plots.
This is from experience. I've been snorted twice this week at 6am walking up to my stand near the cornpile, this morning from both sides of the stand. There were deer everywhere. Odd thing is, I saw 10 deer today. Until today, I'd only seen four in the past month and a half. About 11am the deer started moving again, but they stayed 60 or 70 yds OR more from the corn and stand. I watched them for about three hours and they paid no attention to it. Tomorrow morning, I'm going to go in after first light and see if they are still feeding at the corn, but not go into the stand. I'm going to take my climber and sit off the path they were walking about 20yds and try to pick one off there. |

[blockquote]Beezer, I don't want to be dirty about it. I just want to change his way of thinking. He is ruining my stand location but{in all truithfulness} he isn't doing anything wrong. He is legal and it is his land to do with as he pleases. Like I said "I guess I will just put my big boy pants on and take it" I may offer to go in halfs on a feeder. If he agrees to move it a little closer to the property line. Not that I want to hunt over a feeder but,if it is going to be there; I might as well. [/blockquote] |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
You aren't being dirty, you're hunting the situation. If he had oaks and the deer trail lead by your stand to his oaks, you'd hunt that trail. You can take advantage of the cornpile, or you can make the deer move to your food plots. It isn't like you're leaving an old t-shirt in the cornpile. Remember, if he'd wanted to respect your hunting area the cornpile would be in the middle of his property. His objective is to draw the deer from your hunting property to his. There's nothing wrong with fighting fire with fire, as long as you do it politely with a smile on your face.
Also, if you've never hunted a cornpile, it isn't what it's made out to be. Some think you just walk out and shoot a deer whenever you want to and that isn't the case. Deer catch on fast at a cornpile, at least they do around here. By the way, I put a feeder out after a few weeks and everything cleared out. It seems like the deer are scared to death of it. |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
Ok. This is what gets me. You act as if the man is doing something wrong. (if baiting is legal) Then he isn't doing anything wrong. Its his land. He owns it. You don't own the land you are hunting on and even if you did, again its HIS land.
Honestly, I can't stand when people have your mentality. You act as if he is "doing you wrong". Who says that he hasn't been doing the same thing WAY longer than you've been hunting your land? Seems to me that you should just move on or just hunt on the other side of your property. |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
Thanks Beezer. I think I will talk to him first but, I see your point. If he wanted to be nice he wouldn't have built that god awful, giant platform on the edge of his property and surounded the thing with corn. He actually cut the tops off of 2 threes and anchored to a third tree. The thing is honestly 12' x 12'and, wrapped with camo burlap. I know he isn't within the law using that platform but, it isn't worth turning him in. |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
I would either stick it out and hunt when you are now or move your stand a little further away from the obvious corn pile, some people have no respect for other Hunters.
|
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
No respect for other hunters? ?? WTF...this guy is on HIS PRIVATE LAND!!!!
You are the one who doesn't have respect. You move in and think you should change the way the other guy hunts. ON HIS LAND!!!! Man...some of you guys need to sit back and think. |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
Tom, please read the rest of my posts. I said he wasn't doing anything wrong. I was trying to come up with a good solution for both of us. It was never my intention to force him to change. I just wanted to find a solution that was beneficial for both of us. The only thing he is doing illegal is hunting out of a home made stand. You attacked me for no reason. I am sure he has been doing this for a while . I only got permision to hunt this land this year and , I am sure the monstrosity o a stand didn't go up over night.
|
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
If you can be diplomatic about it, tell him that spreading that much bait is unhealthy for the deer and aids in spreading disease. The deer all eat from the same pile and share diseases. Just like people all touching the same surface and all getting the same cold.
Because of TB and other diseases, in Michigan, you can only put out 2 gallons of bait in a minimum 10' x 10' area. In the end though, since there is no regulation in Ohio for how much bait you can use, you may just have to move on. As others have said, it is his property. |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
I am not attacking you.
I don't see the point in your thoughts. You got permission to hunt this land. The adjoining land owner is hunting his land as he sees fit legally. You move onto the land and see a "problem" in his method of hunting b/c you say that it is messing you up? Give me a break. Get over it or don't hunt the land. And some more information. Living here in the south all my life, I know a thing or two about using corn and 99% of the time a deer will walk through corn to get to green browse. |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
He put the stand up lastyear. He just started baiting it this year. Prior to this year , he was gun hunting during bow season. His wife would call the DNR everytime someone was hunting nearby. They could never get my buddy{the land owner that gave me permision to hunt his land} because he was always legal. This guy is no saint{which is why my buddy told me to be careful of him. He is trying to do things right this year. Why wouldn't I try to work with him on that? Here is a solutionfor you Tom; I pull my stand out, and call the DNR on his homemade stand. That way nobody wins. But it would be O.K. by you because I am following the laws and I'm not telling him what to do with his land. |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
If there is something illegal going on. Contact the DNR and let them know.
But if not, then its like I stated...its his land so leave him alone. This happens all the time here in the South. Someone from another area moves in and doesn't agree with "baiting" or what have you so they try to start stuff and try to get it changed. If you don't like it, you don't have to hunt. The other guys has a right to hunt how he wants as long as its legal. JUST LIKE YOU DO!!!! Dude, I have a situation that is far worse than yours. We own 18ac. on the outer corner of a 1,000ac that is owned by a pure *******. we have been at battle for years now. he even told me that (my property line is the state line) I was a sorry hunter and person b/c I hunted my land starting in Sept. and he couldn't hunt his until the end of Oct. I'm not even going to get into the details. It is illegal to use a "homemade" treestand in your state? Define "homemade"??? |

My final thought before I go to bed, I have considered putting out apples and corn with a little mineral attractant as well. Just a thought. |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
in my experience, there is no such thing as putting down too much corn. baiting here in georgia is illegal but i have friends and landowners who do it anyways. once the deer find the corn (it might take a week or two) they will go all out on it. he might be helpin you out
|
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
i have a underhand way to stop them from eating it piss in a bottel a couple time a week then go dumb it bythe corn not right byitbut close that should stop the deer
or try thei will go inhalf with you you can get feeder that are timed and i have always been told that if you put out a little corn they will not go nocturnel |
RE: what should I do about this? long sorry
Well tim I've seen deer walk up and smell where I have urinated in the timber, doesn't bother them at all. I say work with the guy if at all possible or just move yer stands to the travel routes to and from the cornpile. Tom sounds like you have a real Hatfield and McCoy battle going on with yer neighbor but as for this subject standsleeper said he didn't know whether or not it was legal to bait in Ohio and didn't really bash the guy at all for what he was doing. If it is wrong to bait or not is not the question at all he was just wondering what he should do as far as hunting this piece of ground.
