RDHunter, Germ and anyone else from SE MI.
Planning to hunt a piece of property on the Jackson Co. border near MIS the weekend of the 20th. After scouting this property 3 different times now I have come across some major highways coming out into a large field (15 acres or so). There is a group of hunters to the south maybe a 1/4 mile away that are loud, and more interested in a good tree to hang a stand instead of a good place to hunt.
I would like to stalk the edge line of this field the evening of the 20th and possibly set up 4-6 people on the ground around the outer edges leaving the south end open for deer traffic to see what this spot can produce. Anyone interested in this please let me know and I will get you directions there. |

Is the similar to doing a deer drive? Never heard of a deer drive with bows. Or are you setting the guys up just to visually see what deer get pushed out?

I know that piece you re hunting.
Mt friend you to hunt near there, Bill. He died a few months ago of Kidney failure. Thanks for the offer, but I am not the best at deer drives. Did you know Bill Parkhurst? |

ORIGINAL: Germ I know that piece you re hunting. This is the Onsted State Game Area, very nice piece of land Mt friend you to hunt near there, Bill. He died a few months ago of Kidney failure. Thanks for the offer, but I am not the best at deer drives. I wasn't really thinking of a drive but, a still hunt near the travel routes to see what is coming out in that field at dusk. I am no good at drives myself. Did you know Bill Parkhurst? This is my first year hunting down in these parts. I originally hunted the Upper, then to Mio, and for the last 6 years I have been on a 10 acre parcel in Byron in Shiawassee Co. My wifes Gma use to live right across the street and I always had a place to stay. The buck sightings weren't great being limited to only 10 acres but, at least it was convenient. Now my wifes Gma (82) has moved closer to family members in Jackson Co. and this has opened up a new world of hunting grounds for me. I do have permission on a couple private parcels down that way but, (this is not being selffish) would hate to take advantage of these properties by taking a bunch of people, this is only my first season down there. So, again, this is not a drive for anyone interested, just a day in the woods and hunting, what I think to be a great piece of state land........ |

Hey BullRider115
You know I 'll go out with you , I'll bring my Double Bull T5 and a tree stand with some climbing sticks. Will put that stand in the tree where we bumped that doe , we should see alot of action around in that field . |
RE: RDHunter, Germ and anyone else from SE MI.
My plan is to go down Friday the 19th, and head into that field the morning of the 20th. I believe there is 6 of us going and we should be able to cover a lot of that field. If anyone wants to do some early afternoon scouting around and move off that field that is fine.
I have the Lodge house for that weekend. So that will be fun. Pool will be closed though LOL. |

Those hunters 1/4 mile away don't have to hang stands. They heard there's a new guy in town going to drive the brush by the favorite feeding field. They figure all the deer will be in their end of the woods. All they have to do is take along a 6 pack and wait for the stampede.
Seriously, why would you want to rial all the deer in the area up. Hang a couple stands by the best trails and go hunting. Glass the field at first and last light... you'll soon know what's around. Pushing them off their patterns tells you nothing really. You'll see far more of what deer are around with a low key approach. In a drive you'll probably never see the big bucks. |

I totally agree with you davidmil. I was only thinking of still hunting some major runs out there. I am not a fan of the drive or disturbing bedding areas or feeding areas for that matter. I was only thinking of setting up some guys along this field to scout where they are coming and going.
If someone feels like setting up a stand, I am all for that but, would like someone and everyone to know the travel patterns. The field is much to big for me to do it alone. Thought it would be a great day to meet some fellas and maybe someone can score on a nice deer. I know there are at least 10 major trails coming and going from this field and have only scouted half of it. I will tell those with me where these trails are and I will take the northeast corner to watch what may come from that area. In no way do I want to send the deer to those drinking beer and just waiting....... :D |
