RE: Win these Scent Blocker items
I ran across this post and thought I would share my story.
I am 28years old and I have been married for almost 11 years. I was raised in the city and although the majority of my family was in law enforcement, there wasn't a lot of hunting. When I was a junior in high school, I met this person that lived and breathed hunting. I was invited to go along and ended up finding a passion and an obsession that I didn't know I had. As a woman, Iknew nothing about hunting and wasn't really interested in learning anything about it, but because of my husband,I have evolved into a woman hunter that is passionate about getting other women involved in this sport. I have learned everything from my husband, who has displayed more patience than anyone should ever have to. Through my never-ending questions, my analyzing everything so I can be sure to understand, and my persistance when I am determined to do something, he has welcomed me into this predominately male sport and encouraged me to pursue my dreams. This year I began hunting with a bow, which I am quickly learning is addicting!!Since I began hunting, I have harvested several whitetail deer (with rifle and muzzleloader)and an eastern tom (which was bigger than my husbands :)) and will be going on a mule deer hunt, a wild boar& black buck hunt, and I will be attending a Ladies Only caribou Hunt next August. In addition, I have become an outdoor writer and have several articles published. I am also on several Pro-Staffs and sometimes, the only woman.I know there are women hunters, this site is full of them, but around here(KY) women hunters are sometimes treated inferior to men. I have stood up to men who have doubted mycapabilites of being an accurate shot, or being able to track my harvests, hang my treestand, sight in my weapon,or carry out my harvest. I was able to do that because my husband has given me the confidence and the training to be able to do these things without his assistance.I tell him nearly everyday how much I appreciate himsupporting me as a hunter and also supportingmy drive to get more women involved. Some of my best times are when he and I are in the woods, whether we are hunting, scouting, or preparing our stands and blinds. These are memories that we are making and because of our love for this sport, our 6 year old son is already showing interest in hunting. This will no doubt be an activity that we, as a family, will do together. |

Well folks here goes mine. My person Is my Grandfather! I couldn't even begin to guess when he started hunting. He instilled in me all the morals and characteristics that I still hold in HIGH regard today. Not only in the woods, but in life as well. In the woods he taught me to respect the animal as well as the sport. He always said the best was to respect the animal is to make sure you can make a clean and efficient shot. He would sit me down with a trusty .22 and a box of shells and tell me not to get up tillI could first hit the quarter and then the head of a sixteen penny nail. To this day I have never had to shoot a deer twice to kill it. One of the greatest moments in my life is when I took my 120" 11 pointer on our small tract of land. The look on his face and love and sense of accomplishment is something that will still bringa tear to my eye to this day.
In life he taught me to make sure that before anything you take care of your family first. Even after raising 4 children of his own, he takes me on to raise as well. (My parents gave me up at 5 months old) He was basically retired from 32 years at an auto plant that he hated everyday, but it put food on the table, and then he takes on a 5 month old child to raise when he is supposed to be relaxing and enjoying life. I can only imagine what my life would have been like had he not made that decision, without the joy of spending time in the outdoors with him and learning his infinte wisdom. Its now been over 8 years since he passed away. Everytime I step into the woods, I do it knowing he is watching over me. I know he is proud of me with every harvestI make and every stepI take to make sure I keep his traditions going telling my daughter what an awesome Great Grandfather she had! Thank You for your Time. I do not have something real elaborate. It is simple for me, my father. But I feel that since he was extremely patient in the whole introduction to the sport I feel worthy of mentioning him. See it was simple for me (so I thought) I saw a deer inthe shed he had shot with archery euipment and I thought that was the coolest....bingo...I am hooked. Not that simple, after my initial excitement, I sorta calmed down and told my Dad that I wanted to "kill a deer". He gently pulled me back into reality. He explained , Firts and foremost, that it is NOT about "killing deer". He said I do it for the 1. Challenge (by the way he used a recurve) 2. the time in the woods 3. The meat. We ate plenty of venison (as I still do today). He wanted to pound into my liitle head that there is tradition and pride invloved in hunting, that is why it is called hunting and NOT killing. We need not abuse it nor disrespect it. I could go on but I think I am over the word limit.
Simply put, I appreciate my Father for the man he made me today. Thanks Dad..... |

My path to hunting is one that came about by instinct, design and heritage. From the very start (I'm 24 now) I always had a fascination with nature, and coming from Southern Indiana I quickly gained an interest in whitetailed deer at a very young age. Because of work, neither my father or my grandfather hunt, but I always heard stories about my great-grandfather who was passionate about hunting and fishing and how he even provided a portion of food for his family. This intrigued me.
After hearing so many stories about my great grandfather, who died well before I was born, I decided at a young age that hunting was something I wanted to be part of my life. After that decision, I wanted to learn about hunting and nature how ever I could. I started asking for hunting magazines and devouring every article, consuming all the material in the only room I could concentrate...the bathroom. At church, I sought out after older men who I knew were hunters and started asking questions...probably even annoying them at times, but they were gracious to a snot-nosed 10 year old. They taught me about different trees, food sources and the intangibles of hunting. These patterns continue in my life today. I still try to read as much as I can about hunting and God's creation. I've learned that my role as a hunter isn't just for enjoyment but it is also me doing my part in caring for a great gift. Sure, I've had some influential persons in my life when it came to learning the little things, but if it hadn't been for the heritage of hunting that my great-grandfather passed down to me, and the God-given desire to be in creation, I never would have even attempted to learn anything about this great thing we all call hunting. So great grandpa Watkins, thanks for giving me something I can pass down to my children. |
