How to stop a deer?
 

Just wondering what you guys do to stop a deer. I usually try to make a clicking noise with my mouth. I'm always nervous the deer will be spooked and take off.

I use to whistle or go psst (how can you describe this sound? lol), but found that doing so would spook the deer at times. I had my 10-point from 3-4 years ago run an extra 5 yards after whistling at him, however, he still offered me a quartering shot which I took.

Since then, I have resorted to a sound that resembles a "baaaaa" sound. I don't do it very loudly, just enough to make them stop. It's worked pretty good so far. I'm sure you will get NUMEROUS answers to this question tho.

I've only tried it, twice. It worked both times.....but I've also realized this. I watch.....and wait.....and wait.....for the deer to stop on its own. By the time I realize it isn't going to.....I make a noise like they do on "TV". By this time....I've learned the deer are already out of my effective range.....and the best thing I could have done was keep my "maaaaaing" mouth shut and not alert the deer to my presence.

Never say never.....but I think it'll be a long time before I do this, again.

The whitsle is the worst. What works the best for me is what the primos guys do..... Maaamp or something like that. Buy a video and do that..

That's what I do to. Works great.
The deerget interested in the source of the sound, but sinceit sounds like an animal, they aren't spooked. I try to start the sound with an 'm' or 'n' to take the edge off of it.

If you're going to stop a deer. be ready to shoot almost instantly. They can be pretty good at locating you, and you don't want to shoot after they know what you are.

Depends on the situation. If "baaa" doesn't work, brush guard on the front of my pickup at 50 mph always stops em (just joking).

Nothing. I don't want to put a deer on red alert. I've seen too many in TV videos spook rather than stop. I watched a gal today trying to stop one just wading in a river at 13 yards. She hit the dang thing right in front of the hind quarter. Was it because the deer wouldn't stop. Heck NO, she made an absolutely terrible shot. At 13 yards follow and shoot or lead and shoot. Concentrate on the shot, not deer calling. 20 yards and under I shoot. Beyond that I wait..... or shoot.:D I have no idea how many deer I've shot walking. They never jump. I think because they're not concentrating on noises and they're making their own.

I go with the baaaaaa also, but right when that sound leaves my mouth, the arrows flying

As many have said BAAA will put the stop on them.Got to tell a story.

I was on a meat hunt by the house.Wife only gave me three Bullets for my Muzzleloader and I had two Tags.

Along just after light,here comes a Doe hauling Tail.BAAA,she stops I pull up and miss.I'm reloading,she is walking towards me.I pull up and kill her.

She is laying there kicking.Here comes another Doe hauling Tail,BAAA she stops.All I can see is her Head and she wasn't moving.So I shoot her in the Head.

Seriously, when bucks are chasing, you do whatever you have to. Last year on a big Illinois buck I had at ten yards I tried a soft mouth grunt with no effect.A loud mouth grunt at fifteen had the same results.Just before he got into some cover at twenty yards I yelled as loud as I could and he stopped.

Ha...I don't plan on yelling at a deer, but I am asking because the doe I got last year was walking at 25 yards and I shot a little further back than what I expected. I have tried different mouth callsand had mixed results. Normally, I pick my lane andnail them when they hit that spot. Oh yea, I also like the taser idea, but they are illegal in NY....even for cops.

Just yell, hey deer stop i need to shoot you. Works for me.
