Wow....I couldn't even imagine...There aren't any bears around where I live (Texas) and I think I would seriously wet myself if I had a momma snarling at me...

Great Story. I wish you had your camera as well.
As many have said there is no need for anything "extra" in the (black) bear woods. As for coons, they might hurt a dog because of the dogs actions toward them. They may even attack a human if they're cornered, but they won't hunt down a human, like they will a bullfrog:D I hope you haven't had any bad experiences bigjim that prove me wrong ol' buddy |

Sometimes I think people believe too much of what they see on TV. ;) Forgot to mention....though I have never been chased by a black bear, I have chased them. Sometimes walking into a bait site they see you coming and try to make off with the bait bucket.....I just chase them until they drop it. |

Comparing raccoons and bears, I'll give the raccoons a little more space than I will the bears. The bears, gone, coon might hold their ground. Two different critters.

What? no pics? I hope that "extra" you are packing in the future is a camera. Did it look something like this?

No need to fear them. I run them with hound sand have many close encounters every year. I have had them bluff charge me a few times but only if I got in the way of where they were going. Just don't corner them and give them an escape route and they will go the other way every time. Oh, and don't surprise them either, they can be attack first ask questions later if you startle them at close range. Just make your presence known.
