Tips for hunting in high temps
I think most of us are in the same boat with the heat. There isn't a whole lot we can do about it, so lets hear some tips for hunting in high temps. I would appreciate any help, because no matter what the temp is I am hunting this weekend. It is supposed to be 89 here in southern Iowa Saturday, with rain moving in Sat. night and through Sunday. Sunday it is supposed 81.

81 isn't too bad, pack light, dress at the treestand, lots of scent control, usually at first light and right before dark.

Scent control and hunt the wind. Pack plenty of water. Buy some of the "cool mesh" shirts. They are GREATTTT. I can't recommend them enough.
Hunt during the middle of the day. When its unusually hot out, the deer usually have to get up in the middle of the day to take a drink and some end up walking around for food. Our first moth of season is in 95+ degrees. |

Thankfully I hunt near a lake and a camp ground, so deer are used to seeing people walking, riding bikes, ect. Scent control is not a big deal in my area, it's more myself being comfortable..and well concealed.
I like to hunt fields in the cool morning and evenings, near water if possible. Pack lite, bring water/Gatorade, and bug spray if you can get away with it. If it's 85ยบ or higher though, I'm usually golfing. |
RE: Tips for hunting in high temps
What pt of Iowa you from DTK, Im from southeast Iowa. Its gonna be hot here (obviously) and one strategy Ive used is to try to find an area along a creek that the deer have just tore up when drinking water. I did this last year and worked great, usually deer seem to use a certain water hole in the mornings after eating all night and early evenings on their way to food. Ive seen a few during mid-day, but not enough to make hunting the heat worth it. You better believe Im hunting water holes Saturday morning, Friday night Im gonna chance hunting the field and see what happens. I also use ground blinds when its hot, seem to get bit less by the skeeters than sitting in a tree.

Hunt whenever you can, I shot my biggest buck opening day 2000 an eight pointer 180lbs dressed,It scored 105 and 5/8 officially and If I remember right It was 75 degrees that day,so my advice is wear light clothes and hunt!

I live in Cedar Rapids, but my Dad owns ground in the Moulton area. That is where I hunt.

I keep it simple. Always hunt the wind. Hunt water if you are planning on staying all day. And if not hunt your normal spots in the morning as it will be the coolest and water at night.
