Updated Satellite Imagery?
Yo - I've got some areas that have been timbered and/or had gas wells/roadways installed over the past 2-3 years.
I use aerial photos and satellite imagery as a primary mode of scouting and planning my ingress/egress routes. However, the problem is that the images on Yahoo! BETA (the maps that I use) - are not updated to show the recent changes to the land. My question is: Are there any aerial photos available (for free) that are updated frequently? The pictures that I'm looking at are at least 2 years old. |
RE: Updated Satellite Imagery?
I've had good luck with google earth and maps.live.com.
Maps.live.com has a feature called birds eye view for some areas that is just incredible. They show a very high resolution photo from real close when the leaves are down. You can even see the same spot viewed from multiple perspectives. I can see my ladder stand, and make out the tracks from the tractor. It's pretty cool. The leaves down makes all the difference. You tell how thick an area is, and you can easily differentiate between evergreens and regular trees. |

maps.live.com is by far the best I have used. The imagery is about 2 yrs old though. I think the only way to gey current is to go pay for a real ariel photo.

RE: Updated Satellite Imagery?
Google and Yahoo is the same 4-5 year old map for my area (I think it is hit or miss on what is updated and when). Believe it or not, the aerial on Mapquest was good and from last year. The only problem is it is harder to work with (save, zoom) than Google. I loved the Mapquest map, but couldn't find the source map online. I'm hoping Google or Yahoo update to that source map. |

You are THE MAN gzb! Those show me everything that I needed to see.I'd think you were a pretty nice guy...if it weren't for that Michigan sweatshirt. [>:]
Judging from the location of the crops, and what was cut (and what wasn't) - those images on maps.live.com are just about 10.5 months old, for my area. Stellar. |

Germ - I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
Gzb - no birds eye view for my area. I just checked a bunch of places out -the area nearest my camp (on the PA/NY border) isin black & white - looks like the old images from terraserver. Some of the ones closest to home were updated within a year. Weird. You'd think with all the satellites flying around - that having an updated aerial photo of the entire globe wouldn't be so difficult to get. That birds-eye view isawesome. Hopefully they update the database to include SW PA soon. That's amazing. |

Now I remember after looking at Germs thread, I need XP, my laptop has 2000

See this is where HNI rocks.
I wasted half a damn day at work looking for that new aerial I saw on Mapquest. Well it was the one they use for Live maps, which I for some reason only found referenced on here! It's not quite as much detail as gzg's, but it's really nice. |
RE: Updated Satellite Imagery?
This is a good website, it gives you different map photos from different makers.
