I thought it was a cracked beam, too... I talked to Frank on the phone tonight, and he explained it was a very deep groove that was full of velvet. Cooler still!!!!!!!!! 
And he was flying so high with excitement... it was really fun talking with someone who'd just killed what's probably a buck of a lifetime at this point. Simply incredible!!

WOW...just simply WOW! That is one gnarly old war horse there. He has just a ton of character and from looking at looks like that old boy some attitude to go with it. CONGRATS on a fine looking animal!
