gut shot deer - thoughts
 

last night i gut shot a doe with a rage 3 blade slightly quartering too. there wasn't much blood but we did stumble onto her after a couple hours. she wasn't dead and let me get real close to her.

What do you think I should have done? Leave her over night or shine a light at her and shoot her w/ my bow (obviously not legal). Just wondering what you all would do in that situation. I'll update what I did but I wanted to get your thoughts.

SHOOT!!!!!! No question to it, put the deer out of its misery!

imo there comes a point between law and ethics. I woulda put her down.

I may get flamed for this.....but law be damned in that situation. There's "right" and there's "wrong". NOT shooting that deer is WRONG.

I mean to pass NO judgement on you. You did what you felt was right. "MY" opinion (and that's all it is).....just differs from what transpired.

Sorry you were in that situation.

I always like to go by the law, but I would shoot againto put her down in that situation.

First off, if I had a known gut shot (did you know that by your arrow or arrow impact?), a "couple hours" as you said it IS NOT ENOUGH TIME to wait before you head out to look for a gut shot deer. You should have waited a minimum of 5 to 6 hours and 8 if feasible or overnight. The Rage does tremendous damage so perhaps time would be minimized however " a couple hours" wasn't it.

Now that being said, if you KNOW you can get close enough, I wouldn't hesitate to do just that and finish her. It's the right thing to do regardless of what the law says. And now for some interesting reading if you haven't ever read it: http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2272257

waiting enough time is a big deal, shed have been dead right where you saw her. no even if you didnt see her get up and run (you didnt say) she probably took off at least a little bit after your encounter. my opinion the fine is worth killing the deer and a good warden probably wouldnt fine you if you showed that you gut shot the deer (show him the smelly arrow,etc.) give her time now and then go get her.
