So after a dull morning I was thinking....
That I just might hunt a destination setup :D(nice size white oak flat) this afternoon and take Ole Brutus with me.....
The area has good buck traffic with light doe traffic at this time.... Here is Brutus with a curious button buck early last fall..... Your thoughts on taking him out????? ![]() |
RE: So after a dull morning I was thinking....
I'm leary of decoys on deer. I've seen more spook than commit. Although they will work, I wonder what the failure to success rate is on decoying deer. Mine statistics favor the failure column.[&:]

RE: So after a dull morning I was thinking....
Ive had success using decoys, but usually durring the rut. Early season i just let them do their natural thing and try and intercept them...
Hunting the oak flat is definately a good idea i think, but i dont know about the decoy...depends on the deer in your area too |
RE: So after a dull morning I was thinking....
Personally, i have never used a deer decoy but have entertained it. I can see where it would play a part at certain times of the year. cool pic scott. how did button react to the Brutus? did he hang around or get nervous and leave? Do you rattle when using him, or more grunting, just curious, like i said, im in the dark using a decoy but may give it a stab sometime. lookin for info :)

I have tried a decoy a couple of times with no real results. Had a couple of does stare it down, but that was about it.
I do like your idea about the oaks. That one could produce. That is where I would be. |

The does have ignored it each time..... I have only had 2 commits on it though a yearling 5 point and this button buck.... The encounter with the button buck I was hunting an observation stand the first week of the season trying to figure which of a couple bedding areas I was getting the most traffic out of trying to figure my best ambush site. I took the decoy hoping if a good buck came out to the field he may commit to my setup which was rather out of the way. You should have saw this button buck come in to it... He was posturing... stiff legged with his neck and back hair bristled up.... You can see his neck hair standing up in this photo.... I wouldn't normally take a photo of a button but had to since he was acting so aggressive. I have never saw a mature buck while using Brutus. My brother however has shot two bucks over Brutus the past two falls... Both 2.5 year olds. I told him to go buy his own decoy ;) [/align] |

Looks like Brutus busted you in your stand. Turn him the other way.[8D]
