RE: Lets see if we can get a Blue Tongue post for every state.
Blue Tongue is indeed in Maryland this year, particularly in the southern countries. About 5 to 7 years ago, it hit at least two years ago and devastated the herd. It got to the point where my buddies would see 2 deer in a field when there would normally be over 20. Since then, the deer havemade a comeback, but I'm afraid this year could be bad due to continuing heat wave and little rain.

I haven't heard of bluetongue in deer in Oklahoma. I have sheep and bluetongue went through the herd two years ago.
Cattle get it, but it hardly causes any symptoms. It is harder on sheep. They get a high fever which causes their nose to get red. Many get one or more sore feet. That usually comes and goes within a few days. Several died, though. The younger sheep are hit harder. Last year I vaccinated and had no problem. This year I didn't vaccinate and have had no problem, however the big water holes nearby have been full due to big rains. The disease is hardest, though on deer for some reason. |
