how long will a deer be good in high temps.
how long will a deer last in high temps? a friend shot a deer tonight and it was not the greatest hit so we backed out. i think that the deer would be bad, because of the high temps.its about high 70s to low 80sanyone have a chart that shows the temps and how long a deer will last? thanks, Pa

Temps are up now but here in neck of PA it's suppose to cool tremendously. The storm just rolled through so I'm sure it's cooler now. I wouldn't doubt your deer to be okay in the morn, besides are you certain to what time it expired. Might make a difference.

Well its probably going to drop down to the 50's overnight, so you will catch some break. I've left deer overnight with lows only hitting mid 40s and they've been fine. I let one sit in 80+ for 3 hours and it had died instantly and it was fine.
If it was a bad shot, the deermaystill be alive much of the night, so when it dies, it will have already cooled from the heat of the day. I don't think you have any worries. Deer don't spoil in an hour. |
RE: how long will a deer be good in high temps.
That will be a close call on overnight, but probably okay. I've seen a spoiled deer but I think it was about 24 hours of 80+. It might also have to do with when the deer dies. If it lives for 5 hours you are already to midnight. As a precaution when you are cleaning, you might want to go a little overboard on cutting out any questionable meat that is bloody and in the vicinity of the broadhead path. |

When you say bad hit, was the deer gut shot??? Warm temps and gut shots are not a good combination. Keep us updated! Good luck!!

Yes I agree if the deer lived into the night yu might get lucky, but generally the temps should be in the 40's to insure that the meat don't spoil, unfotunatly here in my neck of the woods the meat spoiling is'nt the problem if you have to wait till morning to find your deer then most likely you won't be the first to find it,the yotes will have found it first.

thanks for the help guys, but its not my deer. its my best friends brothers. it would be his first deer and on his birthday. my best friend said that the deer ducked the arrow but it still hit the deer. the arrow broke in half and the blood was pink and red. i say it maybe a leg it. they can't go out till tomorrow after school. you think it will be good?

RE: how long will a deer be good in high temps.
not trying to burst your bubble....but i had one do that last year. ducked as it was ready to run. took the arrow high above the lungs and spine. first 100yds had me hopefull of a lung hit. 300 yards past that, i knew that deer was fine. i backed out for almost 2 hours. took 2-3hrs to track 400yds. 300yds was pin drops. NEVER bedded. i KNOW that deer never died. left blood that was pink/red muscle blood. easily could have been lung blood. my arrow was found a few feet from the shot...3-4" of shaft and broadhead in the deer and 7-8" of blood on the shaft.
called the crew out in the morning. think there was 7 of us or something like that. grid and circled for HOURS. left no leaf unturned. i know he lived to see another day. not tryin to put you down....still gotta get out there and track and you guys did good backing out on a questionable hit. best of luck!! hope you guys recover it in the morning! never know...could hit an artery or caught lung...keep us updated! |
RE: how long will a deer be good in high temps.
Well that introduces a whole new scenario into the equation. The deer will probably not be good by 3-4 in the afternoon the next day. They should have gave it a little time and tracked last night. Or called off school this morning. Lots of pink & red blood can be good. If the arrow hit high but still caught lungs, you’ve got a dead (& now spoiled) deer. If it went hi over the spine, thankfully you’ve still got a live deer.
This is a PERFECT example of the “hit one need help” posts of why you should include EVERY tidbit of info for us to help you. I’m talking Mauser the post(Can I used him as an adjective?) tell us 10x more than we need to know. Had your 2nd post been included with the 1st, the recommended procedure would have went very differently. This also brings up a good point that if you are going to hunt at any time, you really need to have a plan for bad shot(long track jobs), or don’t go out. |
