Crosswind?
 

I've been paying some attention lately to how deer travel in relation to wind currents. I wonder if any of ya'll have noticed the same thing, or am I all washed up here.

It seems to me that MOST of the time, deer walk ACROSS the wind as opposed to directly w/ or against it........Any thoughts??

Try putting a fan in your face and facing it, then put it blowing at one side of your head. You can hear much better when its not blowing straight into your face. They can hear much better and can still catch any smells upwind of them.

I think the deer probably follow about the same ol patterns they always do.....and you only see them when you're hunting a favorable wind and see them naturally walking a crosswind.

I don't think they take different trails based on different winds as a herd.

Just my opinion.

i kinda agree with GMMAT. deer pretty much do the same thing daily...eat and sleep. they generally stick to the same paths from the beds to the food and back to the beds.

if they are being called, they may come in down wind to try to scent check the area...if they are being real skittish and spooky, they might keep the wind in their face..

thinking about it, you are right. when the wind is 100% in my face the deer do seem to come from my left or right...but then again, thats usually how im setup. just off the trail, facing it and it runs left and right....i dont know....i have alot of deer come in down wind of me..wind in their face too...seems no matter how i setup or how good i try to hunt the wind i still get them coming in down wind. thats when i hope my scent control practices are up to par....

So you guys don't tend to think that deer travel in relation to wind currents? It would seem logical, to me, that they would want to keep that crosswind. This is my theory.....Let's say they are walking into the wind.....The ONLY direction they will smell danger is directly in front of them, which, by the way, they can alsosee. Now, if they have that crosswind, they have both the left and the right, can see in front of them, and can hear behind them.....That's the theory, anyway...

edit: yeah, I just read that again...they don't have BOTH the left and right.....that just won't work....

I think it also depends on the temperatures as well and how early it is in the season.

If it's hot and the flies are thick, they will walk into the wind to keep the flies off their faces.

Scent travels in a conical shape, mobo (As it gets further from the point of origin). They cando just finegoing into a wind.

Oh sure, and I totally understand that, but isn't it rather ....redundant? What I mean is, if they are looking in front of them as they walk, and had the wind at their side, wouldn't that just be one other area they have covered? I'm just thinking "out loud" here.....
