RE: OK... How about a little strategy talk....
ORIGINAL: Copper31 ORIGINAL: buckeyebuckhntr Cooper... With out any first hand experience with a situation like yours I can only assume.... To many deer and not enough huners.... Lucky dog :D If you were to hunt an area like this would the same hold true with your original statement? I am not debating, I am interested in thoughts about this. I have only owned this property for5 years now. While I know it well, I am always looking for ideas on how to hunt it and take a nice mature deer. I know they are around and maybe the fact that I hunt it the way I do, could be the difference in seeing them and killing them. Tell ya what..... Go the extra mile this year and be as low key as possible and you tell us if it upped your results. |
RE: OK... How about a little strategy talk....
ORIGINAL: GMMAT Fact is, deer do differentiate between a hiker, farmer and a hunter. |
RE: OK... How about a little strategy talk....
You will see this in about 3 to 4 years. Right now your deer do not know they are being hunted. In about 3 years of hunting them, they are going to know and you will see a differnce in deer movment. The trick is to learn how to adjust to what is happing in your area. I just disagree with the assupmtion. I could be wrong....but if I am...so are a lot of people that do those things I mention. I may hunt ENTIRELY different, next season. I've had to this season. Last year....I wouldn't have (and didn't)loosed an arrowby this point. Next year....I might not, again. I have to adjust. I know that. |
RE: OK... How about a little strategy talk....
I'm with GregH on the differentiation. It's obviously not that the deer says, oh, that's North Face gear - must be a hiker.
But I think it is more like being in a dark parking lot. You might already be on edge. You don't notice the people going about their business, instead you notice the person who is out of place, who shouldn't be there, who is lurking around, who is staring at you. Who does that sound like? |
RE: OK... How about a little strategy talk....
I would implement my strategies no matter where I was hunting.... When was the last time you heard some say they didn't get a shot at a deer because they didn't get busted.... :D I KNOW if I hunt where the does are.....and do so in a smart fashion (on a good year....when I'm not trying to actually TAKE does).....they'll be where the does are, eventually. Mosttimes, here, even in the early season....they're with a doe when I see them. Heck....I'd like to make this easier, too! |
RE: OK... How about a little strategy talk....
I agree with you Scott. There is no reason to hunt does early season if you are trying to kill a buck. Typically, the bucks are somewhat still in their summer patterns and bachelor groups - separated from the does. I hunt bucks on their patterns for the most of September, then once October rolls around i normally look for white oaks dropping and what not. Then, like GregH, mid-late Oct i try to get a feel on where the bucks core areas are so i know where to be when they start chasing!

RE: OK... How about a little strategy talk....
If that's the case, guys....why do we sneak to our stands? Why not just hike in like we're on a Sunday stroll?
Why don't we weedeat our path to stand, each day? Chainsaw a tree to clear a shooting lane on the same day? Why practice scent control on our non-hunting intrusions? Are these fair questions? |
