RE: OK... How about a little strategy talk....

As far as buckeyes question ( a great topic by the way). "In my neck of the woods [8D]:D" I dont' even remotely concern myself with the does early in the season. I know where they are, where they bed, where they feed, how they get there, and where they will be come rut time. Through October I try to hunt as least intrusive as I can. I'll sneak into what I know to be buck territory here and there, but I more or less feel it out for crunch time. I really dont' want to go trudging through my woods or concerning myself with chasing does around. I let them do their thing and not pressure them so I can use them as a tool come the seeking/chasing phase of the rut. Then I'll adjust accordingly.

p.s. As far as the luck thing? :D:D[8D]I always get a kick out of that one. I don't care what kind of land you have, how much you're able to hunt, etc....there's more to it than "luck". I say.......... "make your own luck". Matter of fact that sounds like a good signature line[8D].

early in the season i like to get as close to a bucks bedding area as i can without busting them.I also try to find what they are feeding on too.these bucks don't move around much except early or late{most the time} if i can slip in my stand early enough and catch a good buck trying to get back to his sanctuary then i my have a chance, same in the evening if i can catch one slipping out to get a drink or to go feed than i might get lucky.the closer to the rut it gets the closer to the does i want to be,because this is when you may see that trophy you are looking for and he may be from over a mile away looking that perfect girl.deer will travel out of there home range in search for does.

Other than somehow it was turned into GMMAT and HIS deer on HIS land, as compared to everyone else's, I found it to be quite fascinating...Excellent thread my friend. You don't say much, but what you say is quality!

This is an interesting post for me, because my hunting partner and I are havinga similiardiscussion. We have two good areas with a lot of sign, and several bucks on the trail cams. We have a few other spots that we haven't seen that much buck activity but several does and some small bucks. These areas however have produced some pretty good bucks during spotting etc. We are debating about hunting the early season where the does are becasue there is a lot of food (corn)in the area and the bucks get hungary. Where we have been seeing the better bucks is a transition areabetween bedding and some applesand it is also a natural funnel. Typically the bucks are moving through much later the earlyest so far was 7:30 PM and still light but that was only a few days ago. Two years in a rowwe shot bucks before the 15th of October neither of thesewere huge studs but respectable racks. This year we really stepped up the scouting and planning as well asavailable set ups now we are having troubleselecting the right spot. Also, we have never had the opportunity to hunt corn field edges and this year we have access to two areas with corn. None of the areas we hunt give us a good opportunity for an observation stand only trail cams. I don't know which spot we will be hunting this Sat for the opener but I can't wait! I keep and earth scent wafer in my Truck and smell it every morning on my way to work to get me through the week. Good luck to all, I'll be watching this post to learn more.

I noticed something.... Of HNI's most prolific mature buck hunters (whos success are known to all ofus ) that have checked into this discussion have said basically the same thing.... I think that is saying something ;)

I think what it is saying is that they are fortunate enough to hunt lands be it private or public with low hunting pressure and a good Buck to Doe ratio????;)
Ummm... I work on a 6000 acre farm and average 3200 hrs a year working there. Great hunting... well in the last 19 years working on this farm,it is safe to say 90 percentor moreof my bucks anddoes have been taken off other's land. Of my4 biggest buck ( bowand rifle ) two were public land and two were on private but unposted. I learned along time ago to knock on doors and get as much land as 50 people could need to hunt posted or not.I can bowhunt 25,000 of private during different times of the bow hunting seasonand another 1500 of public any time.

There is no time pressure isn't an issue. Iscout most of the summer/fall/winterwhere the bigsbuckare andhunt the least pressured areaswhere my chance are greatest with the limited time I get to hunt due to harvest taking most of the first two monthes of hunting season.

I hunt from the ground as therearen't any trees. Hunting pressured deer from the ground ain't a cake walk. Fact it can be humilating sometimes !! [:o] :D

Easy ?? Lucky ?? NO !!!!!!! I feel I am fortunate though as I enjoy the hell out of it and get to share itwith my son!! Soon I will get to share with my youngest daughter. Life is good my friend but it has never been easy. :)

The bahavior of said people is different. They have become conditioned to the fact that your average hiker is of no danger, but a guy sneaking around in the woods, sitting in trees IS.
Disagree. "I" think you give them too much credit. I don't think they CARE who; why;etc... I just think they know there's an intruder.

The above quote is true. It is always better to error on the safe side. Fact is, deer do differentiate between a hiker, farmer and a hunter.
this is easily proven when you look at tractors and combines driving within 100 yards of deer while working out in the fields, but a truck pulling up and parking within sight will spook em and send hem flagging. They have never been conditioned to associate the farm machinery with danger, so why be scared of it.

It isn't easy finding low pressured spots to hunt. That's my story and I am sticking to it. [8D] ;) :D
