I go over what im going to do for each trail and if a deer comes down it, i always try to maintain the killers mentality. but sometimes I take naps, and i always need my tin of Kodiak, otherwise im worthless

Look and listen the majority of the time. I also answer business emails (if I'm hunting on a weekday)and I email my hunting partners....we all have Blackberry's. I also surf the web anddo a little virtual scouting using theGPS google maps/satelite view ability on the my Blackberry. It's pretty crazy that I can zoom in pretty tight on the satelite maps while in middle of the woods.

Pray, day dream, and appreciate the wildlife. Then of course there is the hole hunting aspect.

During slow periods, I read a pocket New Testament and a couple daily devotional guides and pray. It's when I'm doing this that deer usually show up! ;)

Depends on the weather. If it's warm Im comfortable. If it's cold I'm freezing. If it's raining I'm wet. Through it all I'm hunting. Nothing else. Too much going on not to.

RE: How do you pass the time in the stand?

I sit still, I scan with me eyes, I will keep my ears open, sometimes just close my eyes and listen to the woods. I keep a feel for the wind direction, think of previous hunts and what I can do to make myself a better hunter. Basically I strive to be invisable but be aware of all thats going on around me.

Only time my cell phone goes in with me is when I have a time limit in the woods and set the alarm to vibrate and this might be once or twice a season. The rest of the time it can sit in the truck. I don't own a watch either so I am not constantly looking at the time. I don't need any toys or books with me nature supplies me with plenty of stuff to do.

I am there for several reasons.

I love the woods and wildlife
I love the peace and quiet
I love hunting.

I just acknowledge how lucky I am to have vacation time that I can devote to hunting. Lots of people aren't so lucky. At times I get bored, but it's better than working:eek:.

I sit and think about how lucky I am to be alive and doing what I love most. I give thanks to God for my family, friends and my job. I also think of the funny and cute things my children and grand kids have given me, sometimes I catch my laughing out loud in my stand. If someone was watching me at that time they would think I was nuts :D Bottom line I'm never bored in my stand and I set all day in late October and November in the rut. :) We bow hunters sure are [b]Blessed :)

I enjoy being out taking in all of the things God has given us to enjoy. I take my Outdoor Bible and read. My son hunted this morning with my dad and he grabbed my Outdoor Bible and took off with it. I guess I need to get him his own.

I do a lot of glassing. Visualizing shots and keeping an eye out for any possible movement. I also sometimes read the regs.

RE: How do you pass the time in the stand?

I don't ever read, play games or even play the tamborine. I start hunting the minute I get out of my truck. I'm checking wind as I'm getting dressed, I plan my stalk to what ever stand I'm going to hunt, take what ever needed for that stand or climb and I hunt every step on the way to my destination. When there were deer in our woods, this made for some real short hunts.
Once to the stand, ground blind, tree, ect it's time to hunt some more. Get settled in, get everything ready and perfect. First 20 minutes I'm as quiet and still as can be. Tune in the ears sit still and watch the wind, and take a few ranges with the range finder if needed. The range finder has pretty good glass, if I haven't used it to scout my way to the stand, I generally take a quick scan around.
After 20 minutes, I might start calling a little, some light rattleing, then get still and quiet again. In area's it's ok to bait or near an apple tree, instead of rattleing or calling, I'll start with dropping apples. Just like rattling, be ready and still. Apple tree addicts will come in running for a fresh apple. lol I got my nicest buck this way. Last 2 hours of the day I stay pretty quiet and try to stay still. aa Last hour bows in my lap or hand,Last half hour I'm standing at full ready, bow in my hand.
If I'm too restless to sit, I either stay out of the woods till late, an hour of sitting still is more productive than 3 hours of bouncing around the stand. I've several times this year left the stand early because I wasn't sitting still, couldn't get in the zone. Regrouped and went back out for the last hour. Hasn't paid off this year yet but has for me in the past.
It seems to me the longer I sit the fewer deer I see. I see over 50% of my deer on the way to the stand or first 1/2 hour os sitting in the stand. The other 50% is durring happy hour. I should be out right now but it's 82 degrees and 15-20 mph wind. With this weather I'm not sure whats worse, the wind or the mosquito's when it dies down. I've never hunted with so many mosquitoes.
Personally I'd leave the books games and cell phones at camp or in the truck. My eyes aren't getting any younger and last thing I need when trying to shoot my bow is blurry eye sight.

I carry in my pack a little solitaire game that i play around with when things are slow. Usually helps for a while.

RE: How do you pass the time in the stand?

The first thing I do after I get settled into my stand is pray. I love to watch the woods come alive in the morning. Watch the animals start moving and the birds start chirping as the sun starts a new day....there's nothing better! I enjoy the birds and other wild life throughout the day.We usually talk quietly on the radios when we get bored. Since there's usually 5-10 of us at camp, there's always somebody chattering about something on the radio.

I just practice different scenrio's in my head. I figure out what I am going to do with my bino's (no strap on them right now), watch for deer, try to figure out what every sound is that I hear, and sometimes I mighttake a little snooze!:D

It sounds like I'm not an oddball afterall. You guys do alot of the same things in the stand that I do. Has anyone heard of the trail monitoring system that signals your cell when an animal is approaching your stand?

I like to sniff my farts. But when doing this you must use a safety harness because some will make you fall out ofyour stand.
Solo...
I must admit, I laughed so hard when I read that I almost choked on my spagetti and venison meatballs I'm having for lunch!! Thanks for the mid day laugh!
