First time to draw on a deer and i miss....

well i was hunting yesterday, the second day of the season, and i finally got an opportunity. it was the first time i ever drew on a deer. it was the perfect set up and i punched the trigger. it was about a 28 yard shot and i had it lined up perfectly. i was calm and collected until i looked at the spike through my peep sight. then i got excited. as soon as i released i knew i missed. its alright though, i have the rest of the season to hunt. i guess i'll just have try again next weekend.

It happens, heres a tip, when you have the pin settled, release, dont think about it, dont look at the head, just exhale and release.

It happens to the best of us. Missing all together is better than shooting it in the gut though.

dont punch the release this could cause you to move your bow when u have it lined up softly squeeze the release...

Hey dont get yourself down, i remember the first time i drew back and shot at a deer i forgot to look threw my peep sight[&:], the best way to learn is from your mistakes, you'll have many more chances im sure.

Hunter,
If you only knew how much I worry about that happening to me. Hang in there. You'll get him.

Been there and done that. It will happen for you. If bowhunting was easy, folks would quickly get bored and go back to surfing porn.;):D

Nothing like experience when it comes to putting down game. Don't get depressed, Murphy attacks us all from time to time. Even us Ol' Farts;)

I missed on a nice doe this past week because my sight had been knocked out of position from a previous outing a few days before. So I hear you. You live and you learn and you have a lot of season left. Good luck!!!

Been there and unfortunately done that. My advise is to make sure you don't grip the bow...instead cradle it. I had a bear at 20 yards 3 years ago and I gripped the bow (excited) and the arrow pulled to the right just enough to go from the perfect hit to a shoulder hit. Luckily the bleeder blade on the Steel Force head cut the artery and he blead to death on the run out.

Dont worry.Iam sure everyones been there, some more then others,do like it was said before, when you have the pin on target squezzzzzz the triger and make it like your shooting your target, all that matters is what the pin is on.....
Beside now you can hunt longer......;)

Remember my first draw perfectly. Twenty yards, broadside, on my pin , release, and SLAM it hits a tree five inches above it's back. There was a spider web across the arrows path. Just enough to deflect it upward. I was depressed for weeks.

Been there last year, but for somewhat different reasons. Hoping to put the fix on that this year.

Sounds like you know what happened and learned from it. That's what it's all about.

Your first and probably not your last. Like everyone has said, learn from it and do better next time.
If we didn't get all excited inside, what fun would it be!

Oh man, the first time I let one fly, I spaced and looked at the 25 yd pin instead of the 15 yd pin. Right over its back. Lucky for me it was a yearling and just stood there dumbfounded while I drew again. I settled down and took a deep breath and put one right through both lungs. Just take your time. As long as you arent spotted, you will have plenty of time to draw, find your pin, take a deep breath, and slowly squeeze the trigger.

Yep, it's happened to me as well, on more than one occasion. Imagine having missed a couple P&Y's in previous years, and you have a 140-150 class 12 pointer walk within' 6 yards of your stand. You're not excited, or anxious, you're PO'd because you know you're not letting this one get away like the others. You draw.....(What a first bow kill huh?) then you release the arrow and drop the bow so quick to see where you hit him, that the arrow flies just south of the kill zone. That wasme 2 years ago. You'll get many more chances, and you'll get'em, just stay cool and keep after them.

Sorry to hear about your miss. I took my first deer two seasons ago. 10 seconds later I took my second. My third came that same evening, and all three with the bow. Then, my next two deer I shot I wounded and never found. Like you, I just got excited and touched the trigger to quick. I was torn up on the inside, knowing I had just wounded such a beautiful animal. My brother, friends and I spent over25 hours looking for those deer.

As others have said, it is much better to miss than wound. You obviously know how to shoot. You'll get them next time.

Another Miss Story...

It also involves a bear. I was sitting on my stand. This nice 300# pitch black bear comes in at 10 yards. I pull on him, settle in, put my pin on the boiler room spot and release. I hit the fat layer above his spine...I know this because I saw where the arrow hit and the arrow was only covered in fat...no blood. I realized I had used my 20 yard pin. :(:(:( I went home and removed all of my pins except the 10 yarder since all I was doing at the time was bear hunting from this stand.

Live and learn...
Reid
