Annual Be Proud of What You Shoot

As always I encourage everyone to proud of whatever animal they are fortunate enough to harvest this season. A doe, a four point, a six point are all trophies. Good luck to all you this season and be proud of what you shoot.

RE: Annual Be Proud of What You Shoot

For you newer guys, what PABowhntr is saying is... Be proud of what you shoot. Don't feel the need to come online and say "well, it's only a 4 point but..." Or "It's only a doe but....".
You have done something in the sporting world, that only a relatively small portion of people can claim. You have taken an animals life with, stick and string. You have successfully beaten it's defenses and gotten close enough to make a lethal shot. You probably had to do some sort of tracking, to locate the animal. These things are all constants. These things will be done the same, whether it's Pope and Young, spike ordoe. Be proud of that.
Do not let participation on this board, or the contest, have any bearing on what you shoot. Hunting is a personal thing, it is between You and Nature. If you are happy with your success 95% of us will be just as happy for you..the other 5% you are not gonna please.

So sign it loud..HERE's My Broken Tined, 3 legged,4 point... that I shot at 15 Yards !! Be proud..you're no longer an archer..Your a successful BOWHUNTER!

Extremely well said. Bottom line is a doe will feed my family just as well as an 8 or 10 pointer. This place makes me wish our opening day was already here. Come on October 1st. Happy hunting to all. Hope you have a very productive season, and remember, while your out there, take time to enjoy what the good lord above has given us.

RE: Annual Be Proud of What You Shoot

I recently had a discussion with my nephew about this. He hunts in Ark. with his dad with a rifle. I hunt in Mich. with a bow. He said it's no different. I explained it to him this way. You are 17, using a high powered rifle, shooting a deer 200-300 yards away. You could sit in your tree listening to that crap rap, poping the top on a red bull, and talking on you cell phone, in your 3 day worn clothes with your pants aroundyour buttand still take a deer. I sit in a tree, full camo, can't move, can't speak, can't eat or drink, afraid to break wind for fear of the deer seeing you, hearing you, or smelling you. If you can get close enough to hear that deer crunch the acorns below you. You have won. These animals are so smart and skittish, you get that close, you have become a true bow hunter. If you are lucky enough to do all that and harvest a deer. Consider yourself blessed. Be proud of that deer. The only person you have to satify is yourself. May we all be safe, down wind, and enjoy every second we spend in the woods this year. My the hunting gods bless everyone with the experiance of a fruitfull hunt and a full freezer.

Nicely done guys. Way to keep the them of this thread going. Every animal is a trophy...especially with a bow. ;)

I agree, you HAVE won if you get within 30 yards of a wild deer. Thats what people who do not bow-hunt don't understand, they think everytime you hit the woods you should kill something. That's not how i feel about it.

Great thread and lots of great comments!I picked up the bow 2 years ago and finally scored my first deer with a bowthis past weekend! It was a nice doe which will feed my family all winter and I couldn't have been more proud! I will never forget it.

I hate when somebody makes remarks like "why would you shoot a deer that small" or other things along that line when someone kills a "small" deer. Let them be proud, because they should be!! Just because it isnt a trophy to you dosnt mean it isnt a trophy.

Does this mean I can TRASH the HNI's "Legitimate Hunting Procedures and Methods of Fair Chase" handbook that I've spent the last few months preparing? You guys are alright!:)

I would like to further add...as hunters, let us be just as proud when a brother/sister has accomplished a successful law abiding kill! He/she deserves a pat on the back-PERIOD! Thisjunk of "An elephant is not high on my list of things to shoot. I'd rather shoot a dang mole or something" is a bunch of BS! Nobody cares what you wish or wish not to hunt! If you elect to pass on opportunities, then fine! But this is absolutely no reasonfor failing to congratulate another man/woman for bringing home the goods! By golly,a man and his friends hunted an elephant with a primitive weapon. The very same thing(or very closely related to) our ancestors did when they chased mammoths across the Bering Strait. One of our boldest, most outspoken, self proclaimed, hunters could only say "The bow hunting bond? That sounds gay!"He gave notone "good job", "that's great", "awesome"...nothing of a congratulating nature! Sad!

Be a kind and gracious hunter-it has its rewards! Enough said

Went out Sat morning till 10:00. Saw nothing.
In the evening at 6:15 I heard a few snorts about 100 yds away and figured it was over. At about 6:30 I was ready to lower my bow and already had the rope clipped to the bow limb when I heard a deer walking in from behind me. A button buck walked 20 feet directly below me and stopped in front of me at about 10 yds. I passed and then heard another from the same direction. I saw the doe through my platform and it stopped at 5 yds from my tree facing away from me and a little to my left. I drew and put the red dot on her last rib. When I released she ran in a semi-circle and actually came back towards me and fell over at 15 paces from my tree. I watched her die in all of 10 seconds.

The arrow entered high behind the ribcage and exited low between the neck and shoulder. The little loop she ran was all of 30 yds.
I have killed my last 4 deer with First Cut broadheads and everyone of them dropped within my sight.

I am very impressed with its performance. The exit holes are the size of a half dollar. All 4 were complete pass throughs.

I'm a Proud Successful American Bow Hunter! It was my first yearbow hunting this season andI practicedall summer until season started.Bagged a nice basket 7 at 30 yards out of mynew Summit. (Still waiting to get something with my gun with a few days ofgun season left.)The feeling was great! I was shaking like crazy, heart pumping and timed everything right.Found thebeautiful animal about 100 yards away from where I shot it with a great blood trail.Double Lung shot. I could see the actual arrow mark through both lungs. Get-R-Done!!!

I haven't even gotten a deer with my bow yet! When I was young, I used to see deer all the time, but of course missed all of them. Then, when I'm strong enough to handle a flat shooting bow, of course I don't see anything. But hey, haven't spent much time with football and all. But now that that's over, next year I'll finally be able to do some serious hunting!

ok well here is how my 3rd year as a bow hunter went. The first deer I got this year was a doe.She was walking down a old log road about 30 yards to my right.now I had a corn pile about 15 yards infront of my stand that i put out a month before the season opened and stocked it about every other day. our season opened on september the 29th this year i hunted every day and evening and did not see a thing but on the 5th day i seen this doe coming down this old log road and she came to my corn but about 20 yards behind her was a bigger doe which is the one I wanted .But the bigger doe seen me so i thought i better shoot the one eating my corn before they both seen me and ran off.Just as I pulled my bow back the one on the corn seen me as well and ran about 20 yards and stoped behind this big oak tree .the only parts or the doe I could see was its rump and its head and i was already drew back so I took the head shot..she droped and i had to get down and put a second one in her chest to finish her off..Doe number 2 was taken at 30 yards over looking a corn field that had just been cut for about 5 days it was around october the 15th So with all that said not a bad third year

i was able to take a mature doe during the first week of wv bowseason. I was just as proud of her as the 4pt that I took on opening morning. I feel any deer you take with a bow is a success.

...and for all of the anti-bow hunters who think the kill is not quick...she only went 5 yards.

HERE IS A GOOD HUNTING STORY FOR YA. IT WAS THE MIDDLE OF THE RUT HERE IN KANSAS THIS YEAR AND BUCKS WERE DOGGING ALL WEEK. I WAS USING MY CLIMBER FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT WAS ABOUT 8:00 BEFORE THE FIRST DEER STARTED RUNNING THROUGH, I HEARD SOMETHING ON THE FAR HILL SO I RACKED THE HORNS TOGETHER, BEFORE I COULD RATTLE FOR EVEN 2 SECONDS I COULD HEAR IT RACING TWARDS ME, I TRIED TO PUT THE ANTLERS UP IN TIME BUT HE CAME IN TOO FAST, BY THE TIME I HAD MY BOW IN MY HANDS HE WAS STANDING 20 YARDS AWAY STARING ME DOWN (160", TALL TINED 10PT BUCK). HE JUMPED AND SNORTED 3 TIMES BEFORE I TRIED TO SHOOT. THE INSTANT I RELEASED HE DROPED DOWN TO RUNAND THE ARROW SAILED OVER HIS BACK. 10 MINUTES LATER I WAS SEEING BUCKS DOGGING DOES AGAIN SO I RATTLED AGAIN... I HEAR HIM COMMING SLOWLY FROM MY RIGHT. THE BUCK CAME STOMPING IN EARS BACK, HACKELS UP. THIS IS A DOUBLE MAIN BEAM 14 POINT BUCK, HE IS BROADSIDE AT 20 YARDS AND STILL ACTING TOUGH, I GRUNTED LOUDLY TWICE AND SAID "HEY!" HE WASN'T STOP'N FOR NOTHING, HE WANTED TO FIGHT. I FINALLY SHOT HIM AT 30 YARDS WALKING AWAY, THE BUCK RAN 20 YARDS AND LAYED DOWN. AT A CLOSER LOOK HE WAS ORIGINALY A 14 PT BUT HAD BROKE OFF 3 POINTS AND HAD 3 STAB WOUNDS IN HIS BUT FROM LOOSING A FIGHT.

I took my first deer with a bow this past season; it was a 2.5 year old seven point. The shot was 18 yards, and the arrow got both lungs. It ran about 40 yards and dropped. I have killed several larger bucks with a rifle but none of them came close the experience I got taking this deer.To get that close, without being seen, smelled or heard. Knowing that any movement at the wrong time would cost me the shot, waiting for just the right second to draw back and release a perfect kill shot!! It is a very personal experience between you and the deer. I tried rifle hunting later in the season but lost interest quickly, bow hunting is the way to go!!!!
