Scared of coyotes?

While reading the thread on carrying a sidearm while bowhunting, I was amazed at the amount of hunters mentioning coyotes as being a reason to carry. Surely you guys jest. Loose dogs are much more of a threat in my opinion because they have been domesticated or were at one time and lose their fear of humans. Coyotes...........nah.

Never been scared of yotes. They are in fact an amazing animals and in PA, any sign of humans and they get gone fast. The only time I even second guessed was a time we were set up on a wounded doe in the darkness and the yotes started circling us.

Yote, nah like CM said, domestic dogs are more of an issue. I don't think I"ve ever heard of a human/yote casuality or attack. There is nothing in the wild wood of PA that I even think twice about. Black bears flea quick too, all you need to do is make a little noise.

The only thing scary in my PA woods would be another human. I can handle them. ;)

RE: Scared of coyotes?

I've hunted them a lot and I've got to know their behavior pretty well. An attack on a human while I can't say never happened would be very...very unlikely...I've never heardof one.

I posted a story not too long ago about having coyotes howling and running around me about 35-40yds awayin the pitch black of night after I just made it in time to my downed doe that just had her tail bit off.

That's just about as aggressive as they will get with humans......letting you know they aren't happy....from a distance.;) They will keep their distance if you are moving about. I have had them run through my camp site while in my tenton a few occasions though.

Coyotes are cowards. That's why they stay alive so well.

To have 3 or 4 yotes parallel your movement through the woods isa bit out of character don't you think. I am one of those wimps that will every now and then carry a pistol in my pack. I have seen hundreds of bear and they all ran when they saw me except for two. They were smaller 150 to 200lbs bear. They could have cared less that I was there. Not to mention the porcupines. Try and share a tree stand with one of them.

The only coyote that would be a threat would be a rabid one and you could probably kick the thing hard enough to kill it if you had to.

Now if you're in Cougar country like I am, you have reason to be wary. Having had an up close an personal (and killed it) with one I can tell you first hand that these critters mean business. Amazing piece of muscle, teeth and claws.. and they taste just like pork!:D

FYI: There were a few attacks on humans in the recent months. Remember the 2 attacks in NJ recently, so I would say it would never happen!

I'm not going to lie walking into the woods at night and hearing a noise, then moving your flashlight in that direction and seeing eyes glowing back at you is not exactly fun tho.

Yotes are getting bolder with the increase of loss of habitat. The other day my girlfriend let her small dog out to do it's business, within two minute she heard her dog and a coyote had it running accross the pasture. Luckily the coyote dropped her dog. Dog lived but suffered a punctured lung and some broken ribs. Coyotes are on my list

RE: Scared of coyotes?

I can't imagine being scared of a coyote. The only time I've been remotely freaked out in the woods was on 9/1 this year when my buddy shot a bear w/ his bow. We thought we were tracking a dead bear. When we tracked it to it's den it ran out the back side but didn't run away. It went from side to side, half-way around us. We had no weopon other then a pocket knife with us. stupid, I know, but we thought it was dead.

but a coyote? maybe it's to shoot the coyote if they see it, not necessarily for protection???

...speaking of porcupines. I almost ran one over tuesday. dang thing wouldn't move off the road for anything. I had to go around it.

Heck, even the Road Runner isn't afraid of the coyote.[8D]

You are more likely to be attacked by a deer than a Yote.

RE: Scared of coyotes?

I read in Outdoor Life a few years ago that coyotes attacks on people are becoming more and more common. However, this is actually happening in the cities and suburbs where they aren't hunted.

One attack, the coyote was after a young girl, and didn't back down when the father stepped in. He got her into the house safely.

Another one, a coyote attacked a guy who fell asleep in a park.

I don't have any fear of coyotes and wouldn't carry a firearm for protection against one, Here they are rarely seen, and when they are seen they usually have lead chasing them.

I am happy to hear most of you are not afraid of coyotes. I have heard alot of tall tales from hunters when theyencounter a coyote in the woods.

They are curious varmits. Years ago when I was in Arkansas, they would follow us if we walked to get the milk cows up. They were so used to seeing us on 4wheelers, that if we walked they would follow to see what we were up to. They would hightail it if you stopped to see what was there though.

Hunting in SE Texas where it really never gets cold, I would be more concerned about stepping on a cotton mouth or a timber rattler than running intoany yotes...

Yotes are babies!!!! I was more spookedwhen turkey hunting and having a nice gobbler walking up to me and then suddenly running into the woods.
While I was sitting there wondering why he took off, I suddenly heard panting coming up from behind me. When I turned it was two german shepard size dogs coming right toward me. I stood up to see if it might spook them but they kept coming. I took off my face mask and started calling them, you know, "Here Boy Stuff". And finally they lowered their heads and walked up. They were wild but not starving. Thank God!

RE: Scared of coyotes?

I am not scared of coyotes but I once shot a doe during muzzleloader season across a creek I was hunting and saw her go down in the weeds,i could still see her partially on the ground.I knew she was dead so i sat awhile longer, and not seeing anything else went to get the boat so i could recover her.I was gone maybe an hour and when I got on the bank on the other side of the creek i went to the spot where I thought she was,now I left my gun because i didn,t want to get it wet or muddy.well, when i get to the spot where she should be there's no deer. Now at this time I am looking down on the ground to try and find my lost deer when I notice what looks like a drag trail and when I follow the drag trail with my eyes I spot a coyote tugging on my deer tyring to drag her away from me.I holler and jump at the yote and it runs off.then i think what the hell, what if it had been a pack of them bastards.anyway thought yall might find that interesting.they are pretty bad around here,if you shoot a deer and don,t find it at night all you will find the next day is a carcass.

RE: Scared of coyotes?

I'm not scared of coyotes. I was just a little un-nervedone early morning during bow season... I was quietly walking to my treestand up in the mountains, in the dark, and heard the high pitched yip of a coyote. It was just one of those things... I know it probably saw me before I saw it, and it heard me too.

Anyway, I carry my Para Ordnance .45 ACP with me from time to time when I bowhunt (it's legal here in VA when you have a CWP). To me, it's not a big deal.
