Jeff, I hope you can catch up on your sleep tonight. Great job finding her after what sounds like one tough trail to follow. I don't know where the shot was at all, but hitting one at the mid-height or above can making tracking very difficult as the blood will just pool in the chest cavity and not pour out. Just a thought. Certainly not trying to "teach" you anything. That is one of the burdens of hunting from a high perch. Congrats again and here's to easier tracking jobs the rest of the year!

Great job, but I don’t feel sorry for you; you know with all the trouble you’ve had lately. This is mainly because I still have 16 days before I can hunt, and I’m envious…

The old adage “a bad day hunting is better than a good day at work”…

Congrats,
KP

Whewwwww! Great you found her. Kinda lifts the "curse". BTW ever try using a good old coleman lantern for tracking? They work great!

Good going GMMAT. One question, why didn't you field dress her? That's the first thing I'd have done when I found her. You got to get those intestines out, especially on a deer that was shot last night. Packing ice around her won't stop the stomach juices from working. Must have been a single lung or a liver to have her run 200 yards. Great job finding her. You really should gut them quicker.

We knew you could get er done, Congrats on the doe!
Your broadheads are fine, sometimes the holes just get pluged with meat or tissue and all the bleeding is internal.
The Brother-in-law called one night, said he knew he made a good hit on a buck but could not find but a few specks of blood. When I got there with some good lighting you could see where the buck had turned up the leaves when he ran off and we found him about 100 yards away stiff as a board, Kirt had shot him right tight to the shoulder boneswith a Snuffer (the old big one) and the holes were huge, but were plugged up with shoulder muscle.
Again Congrats on the deer and your persistence on finding her!

Congrats on finding her Jeff - I'm sure it's nice to have that monkey off your back now. I also agree with David, first thing I'd be doing is getting those guts out. I dress them ASAP when I find them, get the organs out, then if you need pack the chest cavity with ice till you can butcher her up later.

I'm also curious to learn more about where exactly you ended up hitting here at and what organs you hit..........

Congrats Jeff!! I feel the need to drop a doe soon also. I also wonder why no field ddressing? Takes what like 5-10 minutes tops and cools a bunch quicker with ice in the chest cavity. Hope yopur meat is till able to get in the freezer. Keep up with the details and nice job tracking!!

I don't want to give the wrong impression. I, in fact, did not field dress her.....but I DID butcher her. All the meat's already on ice. All I lost was the inner tender loins.

I have a VERY busy schedule at work, today.....and I didn't want to take the time to field dress, skin, etc... So....I did it from the outside (butchered her), sans gutting her. I also thought it was the quickest way to get the meat on ice.

I'll respond to all questions at some point, today....but I wanted to clear that up. She's ready for the meat packaging plant.

Wow, I missed all of the excitment. Congratulations on your deer GMMAT and more importantly on your persistence. Good luck with the rest of your season as well.

good job Jeff...congrats!

looking forward to more details when i get back from scouting...

heck...id like to know how you butcher a deer without gutting it :D gutting is the first thing i do and i can do it quickly...ive only seen one guy that is faster than me..but hes done 100 more than i have. ive only done about 15..ive seen some guys that make it into a major operation and take every bit of about an hour though..

Jeff, been following your post and this is the first chance I had to reply since reading about the recovery. Congrats and way to stick with her. Let us know if it was a one lunger or not once you have time to investigate. Good job buddy.

Bry.....I guess I could go to where I disposed of the carcass and do an autopsy......but I was in a serious race against time this morning. I wanted to get the meat on ice....and get to work.....so I didn't gut the deer (butchered her without doing so).

I told Rob....the entrance hole was where I saw it....and it had bubbly red blood even still, this morning. The exit hole was low on the off-side...and had what looked like aged meat in the hole (grey-ish). It was a "bit" further back than "perfect".....but was, by no means, a poor front-to-back hit (I don't "think"). No foul smell on the arrow. None at the recovery scene. She was laying on the off-side....and I could tell here NO blood had been on her entrance wound side. If she was bleeding....she was doing so out of the exit wound (again....I am assuming). I did notice a little blood on the inside of her hind legs. I assumed from spray (minute amount).....though the trail was non-existant.

One thing I haven't mentioned is......I had my son with me looking for the initial hour tracking, last night. While my pride has taken a HUGE hit in the last 11 days.....I can look him straight in the eyes when he gets home from school, today. Thank you, God.

Great job man. Same thing happened to me last year except it was an 8pt. Sounded like a gun shot when the arrow hit the deer. I gave him about 3 hours and started the search. Looked for the rest of the day with the blood trail finally stopping. I never saw that deer again. I can only hope that he didnt die and he made it to this year. They are definately amazing animals and I wouldnt doubt it in the least if hes still around. That is definately the opposite end of the spectrum, yours being the best outcome there can be. This story should make all hunters proud.

SteveO....Out:)

I am glad you got the meat on ice,I too was worried when you said you didn't field dress her.Probably a good move on your part to do what you did.

As far as the hit,it sound like you got 1 lung and liver.

Congrats and way to stay after it.
