EVER HEARD AN ARROW IN FLIGHT?

I posted this before on another website. Has anyone ever stood downrange, in a safe area, and had an arrow shot past them into a target? Last year while my partner and I weretuning up our bow's for the season, we wondered how loud they were downrange when they were shot?

One of us stood back at 25 yards and the other went downrange behind the pool fence and about 8 yards to side of the shooting lane. What was amazing was how quiet the actual bow itself was. Barely audible on a very calm day. What was even more amazing was how much sound was emitted from the arrow in flight. Standing where we were, the arrow sounded like a "sizzle" coming through the air.

That lead us to believe that a deer may hear the bow and duck it when alerted. But the sound of that arrow in flight was more prounounced and more likely to cause the deer to duck. Just some thought for those of you who may not have ever heard this before. Mike

Yes, and some are louder than others, even when fletched w/ the same fletching. A couple years ago a friend of mine and I did that, I was shooting ACC's at the time, he was shooting Beman Hawks.......The Hawks made a loud "zipping" noise, the ACC's was a much more silent "woosh".......I found it rather interesting.

I agree, and just as true with different broadheads.

A deer will detect and hear the sound volume much different then we do.

Most definatly , I believe they jump the arrow , not the string .

Yip, especially since they won't be standing behind a fence, which will deflect some of the sound of the bow from your ears, and they have better hearing than us as well, so the noise that the bow makes will be heard by a deer much better than by our ears.

I'd bet thatsome deer standing 20 yards away would flinch just as bad if you were to shoot in the opposite direction of it, in some cases! Which would prove your theary wrong. Might have to have a few of us try this during season to test it.

Mike, Yes we did the same thing and feathers were the loudest and then the quikspins and then plastic vanes!! Funny how loud it really is!! Walt

Done this many, many times. It's interesting to say the least.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzziitp

I've always thought deer hear the arrow more than the bow unless the bow cracks quite extensively.

And I hate the term, "duck"....It makes it sound like they intentionally try to avoid the arrow when in fact they are only dropping because of gravity to preload the legs, same as we do when we take off. ;)

I have done that as well. My Phantoms sound like Patriot Missiles!

You hear it going by but do you hear it if it's coming straight at you.

Yup, feathers are LOUD compared to Blazer Vanes.

Hmm...good question. I have no idea amd I don't think I'll volunteer for the William Tell to try it out!

I don't know about the sound as it is coming straight at you. I can say that I heard it coming before it got there though! Same here, I ain't voluntering for that one!

My thoughts, exactly.

Someone posted a link on here a few weeks ago of a guy shooting.....with his camera on top of the target.

I HEARD NOTHING.

I was joking around with my old man... We have a concrete shed by our targets.. Has a window.. We can put one of the targets in front of the shed but there is no way for me to be directly behind or same level as target to hear.. I would def. want to be inside the shed..

The way he shoots, sometimes, frightening

I stood to one side about 8ft from my target deer when one of my friends let go of one from his Drenalin from 30yds. If I hadn't heard the whiz as the arrow went by, I wouldn't have known he even shot one.

Yea I have done this many times on our homerange. Feathers are the LOUDEST by far. Terribly loud IMO.

Check out these so called loud feathers.

One of these days I will do the same with vanes for comparison.

Keep in mind that these feathers pass about 2' over the camera,so of course you will hear them.

ive done it. there is a difference in what arrows and vanes/feathers do to determine sound, but with a fast bow at close range its hard to duck, but still possible

RE: EVER HEARD AN ARROW IN FLIGHT?

There isn't a bow around that is anywhere near the speed of sound.

RE: EVER HEARD AN ARROW IN FLIGHT?

there was something written about this. with a decible meter they found that the bow at 15 or 20 yrds was really quiet but the arrow got up to like 92db or maybe more. they are more likely jumping the arrow but can jump either. i have an old realtree video where chuck adams talked about deer jumping the string and he had a guy figure it out and youd have to shoot over 700fps for a deer to not be able to jump the shot at i think 20yrds.

im a feather fan 100percent but they are in general loud i can hear mine when i shoot them sometimes but i got crappy amg feathers last batch and my gateways were alot quieter im sure of it.

dragonslayer1 09-21-2007 04:13 PM

RE: EVER HEARD AN ARROW IN FLIGHT?

The arrow is definitely not traveling the speed of sound, but it is traveling from most bows at 2-300fps so the deer definitely does not hear what you hear as the arrow whizzes by, that is unless you miss!
If truth was known, jumping string is probably caused by a combination of both bow and arrow noise. I've got a solution for string jumping - it's called the .270 Winchester! Just kidding. Take close shots at calm deer and you won't have a lot of trouble with string jumpers.

I think w/ todays new bows most of the time the arrows are much louder than the actual bow. I have had some broadheads that whistled like a train
