This is good for a few laughs...
... only its scarey at the same time! The following article in todays baltimore sun...
Stop Maryland's season of cruelty: fall bow hunting By E. Joseph Lamp September 12, 2007 Anticipating autumn's bounty of cooler weather, glorious sunshine and majestic foliage also brings sadness to my heart, knowing the suffering about to be inflicted by Maryland's bow hunters on our deer starting Friday and continuing through January. In the 2006-2007 season, bow hunters reported killing 21,991 deer in Maryland. But how many deer got away wounded, left to run around in the woods with arrows sticking in them, or to die a slow and agonizing death days or weeks later? Well-documented studies testify that wounding and suffering happen time and again when the bow is the weapon of choice. Even former Sun outdoor sports columnist Bill Burton has stated that bow hunting does not support clean kills. He wrote in his Maryland Deer Hunting Guide, "By necessity, most bowmen have become adept at tracking cripples - they have no choice. Seldom do their deer drop in their tracks." The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department recommends waiting at least an hour after a deer is shot with an arrow and runs off. If the deer was hit outside the heart or lungs, the hunter should wait four to six hours before attempting to track it. All the while, the animal suffers. Many are never found. As veterinarian Steve Nusbaum has written: "The presence of the same neurochemicals in deer as in humans similarly demands that they feel pain as we do." Imagine the pain of walking around in the woods for weeks on end with an arrow sticking out of your side or your head. Nevertheless, Maryland's hunters - a mere 3 percent to 4 percent of the state's population - hold the purse strings, the votes and the political clout inside the Department of Natural Resources and the state legislature when it comes to killing our deer, including hunting on Sundays. Hunting license fees - not your tax dollars - provide most funding for the DNR's Wildlife and Heritage Division, the agency overseeing hunting and deer management in Maryland. The bow hunters' voices are heard through lobby-type groups such as the Maryland Sportsmen's Association, which calls itself the "sportsmen's voice in Annapolis," and the Maryland Bowhunters Society. These groups can wield their collective political clout in our legislature through the Maryland Legislative Sportsmen's Caucus. Dying and wounded deer, on the other hand, have no money or votes to offer, and thus no political clout to wield. All they get is suffering cloaked as sport and recreation for hunters. As a nonhunter, I am the lone voice opposing bow hunting on DNR's nine-member Wildlife Advisory Commission. The eight other hunters and farmers serving on the commission always outvote me when I stand up for the deer. Yet few people on the animals' side know the Wildlife Advisory Commission exists. Let's put this tragic little secret of autumn behind us forever by ending bow hunting in Maryland. E. Joseph Lamp, a commissioner of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Advisory Commission, is a professor at Anne Arundel Community College. His e-mail is ." We all should email this guy and tell him how off base he is.... |

Imagine the pain of walking around in the woods for weeks on end with an arrow sticking out of your side or your head I had to laugh outloud when I read that... how many of you have seen a deer walking around w/ an arrow sticking out of its head? (besides that one freak pic) |
RE: This is good for a few laughs...
ORIGINAL: HuntingEd ...As a nonhunter That's all we need to know. As far as wounding and crippling deer, "they" seem to think that we just don't care at all, we just shrug it off. I know that I get upset with myself if I wound or cripple one. GMMAT comes to mind after his wounded deer this past weekend. Hunters have hearts, believe it or not. |
RE: This is good for a few laughs...
sent mine, was difficult not to blow up on the dirtbag
From: Donald [] Sent: Wednesday, September 12, 2007 9:25 PM To: '' Subject: bow hunting You are way off base with your column on bow hunting. If the deer population is not managed by hunters than the deer will succumb to starvation, other predators and automobiles, which is just as painful or more painful as being shot by a well aimed bow. To your disappointment bow hunters have a deep respect for the animals we chase, and a majority of hunters will not take a shot that would only wound a deer. The fact is that the deer need to be harvested so that they can maintain a healthy balance in their environment. Another fact is that you anti-hunters will only start with bow hunting and will not end your misguided crusade until you end all hunting, which I and many other hunters will not allow to happen. RE: This is good for a few laughs...
I just made a couple comments and I see my fellow bowhunters are adding them as well. I'm proud of you and remember, keep it professional, educated and direct.

RE: This is good for a few laughs...
left my 2 cents
Just a little info on the bowhunter side of things. As hunters we also do not want to see any animal suffer, whether it be a human related injury, or a slow painful death due to starvation. Im from Iowa and with all the cropland obviously starvation isnt common here, however, not all of Iowa is lush with crops every year due to flooding, frost after planting and so on. Another tid-bit for the non hunters, I know litterally hundreds of bow hunters who spend more time practicing than actual hunting just to ensure vital shot placement. As said before hunters do not want to see an animal suffer. Manufacturers are now designing broadheads (arrowheads) with larger cutting diameter for maximum tissue damage. This in term leads to much faster expiration of the animal and therefore less pain and suffering. For the anti-hunters, unless you live in a dirt home and deal with mother-natures elements you need not criticize. If you eat any meat or animal bi-product such as cheese or milk in your own statements that animal suffered. If your home is made using wooden 2x4's according to your own statements animals suffered. Such as the squirrels who were crushed by limbs and debris, the baby robins as well. If you drive a vehicle, have you NEVER in your entire life killed a living creature, and if you did, did you give it a proper burial and say a prayer for the life it lived. Just another fact for the readers. Many, not all, hunters after a hunt do infact thank GOD for the food he has blessed their family with, and MANY before each meal will pray and thank GOD for the food he has given them. I'm not bashing anti-hunters or non-hunters in anyway. Im only stating my opinions. One of my opinions is that as a society we need anti's. Give Gods creatures your support, but in your support dont take away others rights. You may be a Chicago Cubs fan and I a Whitesox fan. Im not going to tell you that you shouldnt be a Cubs fan because Im not. Im not going to rally all of the Whitesox fans outside of a Cubs game and BOO them and protest against them. I am however going to join my Whitesox brotheren and cheer for their efforts and feel sorrow for their losses. There will always be a debate on hunting being right or wrong. My feelings differ from yours, leave it at that. Dont go popping off bogus facts just as I try to avoid. I say MOST hunters dont want to see suffering, Im certain theres the few who like the scene of death. Just as Im certain that there are anti hunters who enjoy the hamburgers and hotdogs on the 4th of July. In my honest opinion, IM NOT WRONG FOR HUNTING AND YOUR'E NOT WRONG FOR NOT HUNTING. |
RE: This is good for a few laughs...
Sent an email titled, Stop bowhunting...
"Your ignorance is something that I can not tolerate. Most bowhunters are archers, we practice every minute we have to make sure we make a clean kill. With most new bows in the 300+ fps (feet per second) speed, there is less of a chance of a deer "jumping the string" as it's called and making a bad shot. If a bowhunter takes a bad shot, we know to wait a few hours before the search begins, this gives the animal enough time to expire without the chance of spooking a wounded deer further away. How dare you try to take away my right! I am an American and if I remember correctly, I am free. How dare you, because of who you are in politics, make a judgment call or try to persuade people in your beliefs, when as you stated yourself, you are a "non-hunter"; meaning you know nothing about it. You disgust me. If I was a resident of your state, I would make sure you would never receive a vote from myself or anyone I can convince that you are just an ignorant liberal trying to restrict my freedom! It's funny, you liberals went ape **** when Bush wanted to tap phones lines to protect American HUMANS from terrorist but yet you put your foot down when it comes to animals...grow some balls and stand up for issues that matter! Signed, Proud FREE American Citizen" |

I'm sure automobile vs deer collisions cause far more crippling of the deer herd, maybe this wingnut ought to start a campaign to outlaw cars and trucks.

Hey guys,
I have been hunting in MD for 18 years, what You missed was this mans tittle - "commissioner of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Advisory Commission" Thats right, former gov. Glendennig (Dem) appoints the DNR advisory board. it was allways made up of Bioligests, science typs, farmers, sportsmen. Glendenning loaded up the board with peta members. Now DNR hunting decisions are in part made By Mr Lamp and his PETA crowd, I do not like to pick political sides, be I have never seen a Rep gov try to stop hunting. Slack |
RE: This is good for a few laughs...
It doesn't bother me that this guy has his position, he is entitled to it. What bothers me is how off base his statements are and that there is no factual basis to support it. He is using his column to forward his own personal agenda and that is not the purpose of freedom of the press. I will be reminding Baltimore Sun of this fact.

RE: This is good for a few laughs...
Dear Donald, I thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my Op-Ed piece even we must respectfully disagree. Are you an NRA member like I am? I am strong believer in the 2nd Amendment but down here in Maryland pretty much only the bad guys have the "right" to carry. It is sad. If you aren't an NRA member, you might want to consider joining up. While NRA and I part ways on many issues, I don't throw the baby out with the bath water so to speak. They are very strong advocates for our right to defend ourselves. Oops, back to bow hunting. Donald, my focus is bow hunting. I stand by the research and the research supports my claims. I stand by everything I have stated in that article - -with the exceptionof the goof on the starting date. That was a mistake -- not a function of knowing the proper date. That's all I can say. Once again, I thank you for your input here, and take care of yourself. Joe Lamp
