backyard archery
Anyone know where I can find out if it is legal for me to shoot in my backyard? I live in Keller, TX and I have been shooting in the backyard, but I have just recently been wondering if it is really legal as I saw one of my neighbors watching me recently.
Thanks, Marty |
RE: backyard archery
Everything is legal in TX isn't it?;) Sorry, can't help you other than check your local ordinances. Do a Google or Yahoo search on your hometown/city.

RE: backyard archery
I don't know about your town, but MOST of them around here have ordinances against it....If you live inside city limits......But that's not everywhere, I can think of a couple you can.
Like Rob said, do a search and try to find your local government page. Maybe you could send someone an email or something... |
RE: backyard archery
Call your township office and ake them about ordinance's , they should tell you .
Don't wait for some butt hole nighbor to see shooting from the roof of your garage and call the cop's on you. [:@] |
RE: backyard archery
I live in Burleson, and it's a statewide law you cannot shoot your bow in town... At least that is what the cop told me that caught me shooting in an open field. Ausie-Guy was told almost the same thing, he live in Burleson also.

What happened to you guys that got caught? Did they let you go with a warning?

RE: backyard archery
I would certainly check with your city hall or with your municipal ordinance dept in yourcounty seat to find out. I practice just about year round here in rural South Texas and dont have a problem with neighbors. I shoot right off the patio.....:D

RE: backyard archery
I shoot in my backyard in suburban Chicago. Neighbors don't care. As far as ordinances go most are worded that you cannot launch a projectile w/in city limits. It used to say firearms, but was changed to projectiles to encompass other weapons as well. Interestingly enough, if your ordinance is worded this way it is technically illegal to hit a baseball kick a soccer ball or play frisbee in your backyard.

RE: backyard archery
Thirty-some-odd years ago, I used to go over to the elementary school and shoot. Had a couple of hay bales and a big hillside as a backdrop -- used to shoot from left field of the baseball field up against the hill.
My, how times have changed! |
RE: backyard archery
HOLY MOLY.. Flashback @@ I lived in Watauga.. Went to Keller High School.
So how bad have the developed the area ? |
RE: backyard archery
My ordinace specifically states NO BOW AND ARROW. Further investigation revealed that HUNTING of any kind os forbidden. So if a deer walks into my back yard, I cant stick him?!?!?!?!?!?![:@]

RE: backyard archery
I am glad that you brought up this issue as I had not thought about it before. Our town ordinance merely states:
ยง 94.22 SPORTS. It shall be unlawful for any person to drive golf balls, fly motor planes, throw objects, practice archery or shooting, or to participate in other activities which are hazardous to others in any park or on any property owned, operated or controlled by the town; provided, the Town Council may set aside and designate places and specify the times and regulations for engaging in such activities. I have sent an email to the town marshall asking him for clarification and/or any other ordinance that I may have missed. |
RE: backyard archery
Alot, time for me to move further out. I moved here in 2000 and I can't believe how much it has changed since then.

RE: backyard archery
Thanks for everyone's reply. I contacted the city of keller police and was told that it is okay to practice in my backyard. Yeah. He also gave me a website that might be helpful to others. www.municode.com
I also have the officers name just incase someone complains and another officer tries to give me a citation :) |
