Nice job, those spikes are some of the best eating elk without a doubt! Still very much in the velvet.Looks like youhave good luck hunting elk out of trees! Is that near agricultural land?

They range too much in the Rockies and Cascades to reliably expect them to come by a stand.. or so is my experience.

fishman- yes we do have great luck taking elk out of stands. Yet to kill any respectable bulls but cows and spikes have been droppin like flies. My family owns about a mile of agricultural land bordering a provincial park. We cannot hunt elk in the park unless we are drawn but the elk all pile out of the park to feed on the crop. This year wildlife damage adjusted our wheat at a 2400 bushell loss to elk damage. We set up on the main trails the elk use to access the fields and wait them out. Trick is to get them out while you still have light or get behind them b4 they make it back into the park in the morning. Only have about 30 minutes of action a night but its great. Seems we have had better encounters with bigger bulls on the ground as you can move around and they are far from easy to pattern, but again once the bulls hit the bush they are gone. Many bulls will not even come out until the middle of the night. They will sit just inside watching the cows and calling but know better than to step out in daylight.

Rankbull- no thats not a new camo pattern lol. After i take an animal or know i will be loading one for someone else i strip my camo off and put on my rig coveralls as i do not feel like washing my camo the next day. We got lucky again this year with all 3 elk dropping in the field so no dragging was involved at all. I have a winch/ramp hookup on my dodge so i can just backup, pull the ramp, hook the winch to em and crankem up then slide the ramp underneath the false floor. I loaded all 3 myself while to boys watched in awe. Slick setup.

I had a spike under my treestand 15 minutes after first light on opening morning... If he'd been legal in our area, I'd be having elk steak tonight instead of the venison roast I'm eating in between typing!! :)

Wow I hope you realize how great you have it, not many of us elk hunters have those kind of "accomodations".. tree stand hunting and drive up to the carcass. Every single elk I've taken or been involved in taking has been quartered up and backpacked out over rugged terrain.. a major ordeal to say the least! Once again enjoy those spike steaks!

Nice pictures Dan. So are you tagged out in SK on elk now? I think I remember you telling me before that you only get one "either sex" tag, but I'm getting old and somewhat scenile... so...

Good luck in ID next week bro.

Ya fish i have had it pretty easy. Gettem home in the truck then skin out the legs and chain them up on the tractor and loader, electric meat saw, put a pallet underneath the elk to drop the guts on then pick the pallet up with the forks the next day and haul it out yep its rough. Last year we did one in under 15 minutes from the back of the truck to when i was done splitting it. We got a good system going. But i am in for a rude awakening when i leave for idaho as i know she is going to be a bit more like work. Packed out mulies but never an elk so this should be interesting. Save my knees use my back eh lol.

As for the idaho trip well i am having some problems now with school and getting time to go. Instead of the 8-9 days i had planned on hunting i will only get 5 as the Dean of education informed me this morning i will be booted from school if i miss more than 3 days of classes. I only wanted 4 days but i guess that was too much to ask and apparently i need to get use to what a job is like. Hmmmmm worked 70 days straight on the rig without lunch or coffee break and was there every mornin lookin for more. I was sooooo mad when i came out of that room, never even let me get a word in just NO NO NO. Ah well my life would be boring without stress. Thanks for all the kind words.
