Hey 5-shot.

[blockquote]I have an idea for you to throw around. What about k.e. used during opening of a mech. head? Is there a test you could come up with to test the amount of energy used during opening. This would be helpfull in predicting pass through shots. I think some heads will only pass through under perfect conditions. EX. I know the Rage heads use tons more energy to open than the Snypers[ at least on the three blades] . I was just thinking of that while reading your post about the Rage heads. I just thought I would send it your waqy. Thanks, Chip

It's" reading your post" not "reading YOU post". Sorry

Now that would be one hell of a test. A guy in the shop told me" I shoot Rage because they use less energy than even a fixed blade." I politely said "You need to check with the accuracy of your info."

Not sure if a test like this has ever been done. If you can do it 5shot, I will definitely subscribe to get those results.

[/align]Yooper, he may have been talking about penetration. Certain mechs. will out penetrate certain fixed blades. It sounds wrong , But you need to figure for cutting surface drag. I shot a Muzzy 3 blade 125 gr. at a block that had never had a shot put on it. At the same time; I shot a Rocket steelhead 125,4 blade at the same target. The Rocket out penetrated the Muzzy by1/4" . I determined this by measuring from the face of the target to the end ot thecrossbow bolt. [ I wasshooting a crossbow back then]. I tried this three more times with the same result. It's all about blade surface drag. By the same token;I wonder how much more it would have penetrated if it didn't usek.e. to open the head. By my estimation , Snypersuse less k. e. to open thanmostother head. They don't go against the motion of the arrow to open and they aren't as hard to open[when working properly] as the Rage heads. I am sure some kind of test could be made to measure the force needed to open each head. I just don't really have time right now to to add anything new in the way of testing procedures. I will say that it really takes very little energy to open 90% of mechanical broadheads. The overall cutting surface and how fast the heads open has more to do with the penetration potential in my experience.

Hey Chris

Rage heads don't require as much KE as MOST mechanical heads. Just think about it, the blades slide backwards in the Rage heads as apposed to other mechanicals "Folding" back, like a Spitfire for example. The Snypers, are basically a Rage head, same design really. Just a few small differences. If this gives you any idea, on one of the Dream Season episodes a guy got a complete pass through with his recurve, using a Rage head. That's slower than 200fps generally. Not saying your wrong and not trying to protect Rage heads, but I think their design is pretty clever, and does in fact not take as much KE to open because of how the blades operate.

HI Rob, Almost like "old times"

Now we just need Big John, Maui Wes, ArcticBowMan, Matt / PA and so many more.;)

With regard to the Steelhead, you might also consider that it entered the block with the blades closed while the Muzzy entered with full cutting width. That is a penetration advantage, but the disadvantage is a smaller entry hole and initial cut.

Cougar, I don't know what Drury outdoors did. I can only go with my own experiences. I know the Rage heads don't open as easily as the Snypers because I checked out both of them. I stabbed the Rage head into a cardboard box. Each time I increased the force until it opened. I took the Snyper and used the same amount of force. I nearly broke the tip on the floor of my garage. I know this isn't very scientific, but it is proof enough for me. Oldhootowl, I wish I could get some of my pics downloaded to show you the entrance hole on the first 2 deer Iharvested with Rocket B.H. s. TheSteelhead 125-4 blades are responsible for my only 2 "see through deer"After I feild dressed them; I could see right through them. The entrance hole looked like a slug hitit. I am sure you are right about the block, but it isn'ttrue on a deer.
