Funny.....not what I expected.....
With my season looming right around the corner (tomorrow morning).....I'm finding myself looking forward to the time in the woods MUCH more than the "hunting".
Hard to explain.....or do I have to??;) |
RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
The older I get, the less I worry about what I get, and the more I enjoy nature!!!! I used to get bummed at tag soup, now I get bummed if I didn't spend enough time in the field!!!

RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
thats what its all about Jeff. sure, im out there hoping to see game. hoping to fill a tag. but there are days that are unsuccessful that rank right up there with the ones that i am. just sitting in the woods does something all on its own for me. for a lack of a better way to put it, thats where i feel i belong..where i feel at home. where i feel most comfortable. where i can truely relax and enjoy every moment that slips by.
killin that big ole buck, or getting a shot at the longbeard is always nice...but really, icing on the cake for me. i just love to be "out there" the things we get to see that many people never get to witness. the woods awakening on a spring morning...the smell of the crisp fall air when the leaves are beginning to fall, the true sound of a babbling brook, the last hour of a fall hunt when the woods almost seem to glow, the wily ole fox that is sneaking around who is also hunting, the red tailed hawk chasing chipmunks right infront of you...so much we see that many do not. heck...alot of people never even see the sun rise. alot more to hunting than just killing. sure, i will always look forward to the kill. i will always be looking to fill a tag, but if you dont enjoy nature for what it is, and JUST go out there to kill, your hunting for different reasons than I...and not enjoying what we have... i feel we should take in everything we can...see all we can see..never know what day is our last...and dont take it forgranted..if things keep goin the way they are goin, it wont be too long till most everywhere is concrete or asphalt. one of the reasons i feel i am going to truely love my job. i wont be in a concrete jungle. i will be in the wild daily...sure i will be working..but i wont let the beauty of it all slip by unnoticed...i may never be rich...but i will surely be happy... good luck tomarrow Jeff...looking forward to reading tomarrows post |
RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
Good luck. I always enjoy myself when out in nature, nice to get away from the grind even if it's for just a morning or afternoon.

RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
Yeah..I hear ya. Thats why I went squirrel hunting last weekend. Just to be in the woods. That's why I'll do it again this weekend. ;)

RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
I understand completely what you mean. Now I have somewhere to go every evening for a while other than home.........[&o]
There's no place on this earth I feel more like me than 20 feet up a tree..... |
RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
Jeff,
First of all good luck tomorrow. I hear you, just being out there is a great feeling. Of course we all are there to try to kill something yet its not everything, there is so much to enjoy while we are partaking in the process. I cant wait to get back at in in the morning. Friday here is family/church day for the Pottengers..after work, so no hunting for me this evening. I will be thinking of you in the morning though.. Who knows maybe a couple Chaos boys will put bucks on the ground this weekend.. and if not... theres an entire season of hunts to still look forward too.. |
RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
I'm here in NC too and I look forward to the best night of no sleep!! I went with a buddy of mine to hang his stands for him yesterday evening since he can't do it himself right now(he tried to cut off his foot with a skill saw). We saw 2 different groups of deer and we were like little kids. I just love seeing animals and be able to enjoy the environment with them!!

RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
i live in an area where theres not much hunting, needless to say weve got a slight over population problem, but thats all good for me, just means we get to see deer grazing the fields when i bring my 6.5yr old boy home from football practice each evening... he gets SO excited about it... points em out to me and stuff, even though we are in the truck he is so intrigue by it that it excites me... i cant wait to get him out there enjoying what ive been enjoying for years... he will finally understand what ive been tellin him for so long...

RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
Jeff, There are memories "Out There"..that no person can describe and as a fellow hunter I know you understand. "Appreciation" is a word that has to be lived toeven comeclose to any feeble description of what we feel...go do it and enjoy every moment!
Our time in Nature allows us to become less than we think we are, more than we ever hoped to be, and be an active part of the History of this world. Your time will be well spent;) |
RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
I am at that point where I am 50% about the kill and 50% about just being away
|
RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
ORIGINAL: GMMAT I know he will, seven. What a great experience you have to look forward to. Kudos, "dad".;) |
RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
No need to explain. One of the most incredible memories I have is the sight of a bobcat killing a squirrel last year. It came out of nowhere and surprised me almost as much as its prey. For me it is all about the experience, the hunt is icing on the cake.

Gary, only writting i will be doing is reports and such:D going to school for Park and Resource Management..next year, i should be going through the federal law enforcement training...and the summer i graduate, i will hopefully be doing my internship as a national park LE ranger. thats what im hoping...im on the path...with my degree and federal LE training, as well as all my other trainings, such as Wildland firefighting(hopefully be on a fire line this coming summer) basic search and rescue and basic medical like CPR and first aid etc, my options are pretty much endless. most of the kids that graduate similar to me do end up as LE rangers in national parks. I will most likely start there. USFW is another path i may take..state WCO, land managers etc...i will have lots of options...and they can all lead me to beautiful places in the country...and away from the concrete jungles...though, i can work behind a desk in a concrete jungle im sure..
someone has to protect the things we all love and hold dear...protect what we have left...i want to be one of them;) LE has always been in my blood. dad works in the field...different path...he works in the concrete jungles:D thats what i always wanted to do. he talked me out of following his footsteps. told me to chase my dreams. he knows my dreams consist of chasing game and fish all over the country...with my future job, i should beable to chase my dreams. life if short...i might not have time to see and do it all...and wont completely be a job hopper...but i have plans to hit a couple different places and call them home for a while...Alaska, the Rockys, maybe maine, maybe the far west like the hills of CA and Washington...heck...i could travel JUST on important details if im important enough...i know a guy that did just that sorry to hijack...its Germs fault:D ;) |

RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
With all of the hectic things that go on in my day to day life a day in the woods does wonders for "recharging my batteries"
Just stepping foot into the woods lowers my blood pressure a few digits...........until a deer shows up.:D |

So many here have said it so well! Very nice Mauser06! The experience is where it is at,taking it all in! Because you have arrived at that frame of mine doesn't mean you have conceded or given up either. To me it means that you have an appreciation for what is truly important. It is hard to explain to some but not to most of us here!!
Good luck to you! |
RE: Funny.....not what I expected.....
I am sure we all know what your talking about, no explaining to do here.
