How does this spot look? UPDATED
This one is pretty straight forward....There aren't a lot of different stand opportunities here, but what are ya'lls thoughts? Where would you hunt and why?

RE: How does this spot look?
Im guessing your inside the white lines, yes? The spot just above and to the left of the little pond in the upper right hand corner of your boundries, looks to be good to set up, observe and go from there. Oh, and take a bath in the river after work[8D]:DIs that an acessroad running paralell to the river?
|
RE: How does this spot look?
No, I'm fairly certain that is the river terrace. I'm gonna find out more tomorrow evening when I set foot on it.

RE: How does this spot look?
looks like all the bucks are to the right of the white outlined area.
![]() ![]() Sorry, couldn't resist. I agree that just above the pond there is a pinch point that should have some decent travel. Idon't know if it is dry in your area but the pond may have some activity as well, and theymay be comingout right belowthe pinch point to get there. Of course there is a river that they can get plenty of water but I have a spot I used to hunt that almost looks identical, all the way down to the island. There was a small pond and the deer would flock to the pond at night. They would also bed on the island.(ourisland was a little closer to shore) This deer was killed right on the river in that area by my stedad. ![]() |
RE: How does this spot look?
I agree with the above, just above the pond or further left/ west where the actually property pinches, so does the woods right there and depending the crop fields, that would make a good funnel. The thing is, dending on how wide that woods is from the fields to the river you'd cover that point just above the pond near the bigger woods. I think tho I would start just North of the pond on the north/east part of the property.
|
RE: How does this spot look?
The red spots are where i would start out looknig the one farthest away from the pon looks like a finger coming out by a ridge and look slike a good access point the feild.

RE: How does this spot look?
come off the NW corner of the field. looks like theres more green field edge for a decint ways...then a tiny strip of woods between the field and river...thats where id be.
if not there, same set of woods just south west the woods bottle neck pretty good there. hard to say...i cant tell what that green is. i can see the trees...but theres alot of a different green around the trees...if they are too trees, the fields to the east, theres a green finger going down between the fields...could be a potential spot...hard to say without knowing the green. i would definently check out those 2 bottle necks though. good luck...let us know what you find |
RE: How does this spot look?
I think it's going to be a tough place to hunt with the winds that come out of the south west .You might get lucky and enter along the east boundry If the deerenter from the north you will get away with it. If you cann't get in and out with out being detected ,The wiser deer will leave .Neaver trash a good spot by hunting it in the wrong wind .Goodluck D

RE: How does this spot look?
Heres a couple places that look worth checking out. If you just acquired permission on this place i would almost want to wait until mid-october and do a little scouting, then hang stands. Good luck!

RE: How does this spot look?
ORIGINAL: MichaelHunsucker Its hard to tell whats timber and what isnt cause its all green...im sure youll find a good spot when you walk it I'm pretty pumped about this spot though......It's prime river bottom, and this bottom is absolutely huge! There is very little wooded area there......And a ton of crops.....I love hunting river/creek bottoms......And, I get off work at 3:30, I can be in the tree by 4.....it's litterally 2 miles down the road from where I work... |
RE: How does this spot look?
Exactly Michael, you definately marked the one I was talking about, the pinch point in the woods, the middle two dots...good choice.
MO, I wouldn't rule out that island either, a great buck bedding area...watch the river on the off chance scouting. Do like Germ, go in by boat if necessary and allowable/accessible. |
RE: How does this spot look?
I like hunsuckers spots, + one right along river. I have hunted river bottoms for 23 years now. One thing i have learned bucks like to run along the river during the rut. Also like to bed down along the banks also.
Here is the biggest issue, getting to the spots without spooking deer. If you can take a boat to the stand I would suggest doing so in the mornings. The deer will be out feeding and you can sneak in behind them. Find a spot close to the river and a pinch point, have itso you can shoot the funnel and any deer that is between you and the river. Have the river 20 yds behind you. Get high in the tree, this will help with the wind. If one gets behind you, you will not be winded. Your scent will shoot right down the river. |
RE: How does this spot look?
Reminds me of the bottom area's down by McBride, lots of prime bottom fields with plenty of crops!Be careful if that River is the Ol Mighty Mississippi is can be pretty dangerous if there's are big rain! [&:]

RE: How does this spot look?
U talkin about the island on the river? You really think there would be deer out in the middle of the Missouri River? I don't say that condecendingly, but intrigued.....I would never guess in a million years deer would swim the river......Though they would certainly be secluded...
|
RE: How does this spot look?
I wish a boat was an option......It's not though....That would be the very best.......Unfortunately the only access is the road to the extreme south......
The delima of deer feeding in the fields is why I will only hunt this spot in the evening......And only w/ a north wind. I just won't be able to get in there any other way I don't think.......What I'm banking on, and I obviously don't know much, is that most of them will be bedded in the big chunk of woods to the east, right on the bend in the river.....That's what I'm hoping anyways...... It's a challenging spot, to be sure......But I figure it should be dynamite the first week of November... |
RE: How does this spot look?
hunsuckers middle 2 dots are 2 i was describing....
mo...i dont know how big the missouri is, but the ohio is over 300yds wide (dang i just ranged it last month and cant remember the number! but its 300+ ) and its not uncommon to find deer on the banks that didnt make the swim. i usually find them washed up in areas where there arent woods around, which definently makes me believe they swim it...never SEEN them swim it...but i dont doubt it... depending on the size of that island, id almost be there would be deer on it.. |

Germ, thedeer I postedwas killed in exactly the scenario you described, during gun season(rut) and was at most 10 yards off the river in a little line of trees that run along the river within the woods. |
RE: How does this spot look?
Mobo, the most northern tip of your boundry line that comes to a point is whereI would put my big buck stand. Just leave about 20 yards from your spot and the river. As long as it isn't a full moon you can enter your spot right thru the feed fields.(the furthest outside edge ofcourse)I have done it a jillion times in the dark. The deer will just stand there and stare at you as you walk by. I have a small mouth grunt I use when walking back. A couple of soft grunts and you will see them put their heads down and go back to feeding. Go in and hour before sun up and if you do spook a few they will calm down when they feel the danger is over. Like Germ I hunt river bottom land exclusively. I didn't just throw a dart and pick that spot. I have learned something about deer travel and proved it to myself the last couple of seasons.

RE: How does this spot look?
I have friends that hunt the bottom fields of the Mississippi River and they have seen Deer swim across it many times when they were hunting, even in the Winter time!MOBowHuntr if you do happen to use a boat to access the property be careful and always wear a life jacket!Rivers can be very dangerous and have swift currents! Good Luck Bow Hunting...looks like you have an excellent spot with lots of potential. |
RE: How does this spot look?
MOHO, are you talking due north of the eastern pond?
Man you guys, this is what I'm talkin about !! I was hoping to hear from some of you guys that hunt river bottoms alot......I know river bottoms are great places, but I don't hunt them much, and I've never had a river as a boundary before....I'm getting more jacked up all the time....Season opens the 15th, saturday, and I'll be headed there the following monday if the wind is good......I may hunt it a couple times in the afternoon, then back out till late October into November. |
RE: How does this spot look?
Yep, straight north of the pond to your furthest boundry tip.
|
RE: How does this spot look?
Mobow,
Looks like the experts told you where to hunt, but since you werekind enough to post a photo with the coordinates, maybe some of us will see you there.:D:D (Good luck!) |

RE: How does this spot look?
Here's a few spots I thought of. Some of them are what others have said that I agreed with. The one to the far west looked like a good spot because the timber gets narrow there then opens up on both sides again, kinda like a pinch point. Another good one is the spot to the far northeast point. It looks (according to the pic) like there is some kind of a path tha runs down through the timber might be a good spot to catch them cruising between the river and the open field to the south. Just something to think about. Looks like some good land tho. I hope you kill a bruiser. And when you do give me a call and I will come help you drag it out if you need help.

RE: How does this spot look?
I love MOHO's spot as well, the only thing to consider there as well as the east side is any yahoo hunting the property to the east and you know that's going to happen.[&:]
Dending on the distance that woods carries, I still like the middle dot where I first described that pinch point. I don't know the distances here but any deer walking the woods has to cross that pinch point, again depending on the crops...you'll know that when you get out there. |
RE: How does this spot look?
Looks like it could be a jungle in there. I have hunted some islands on the IL River and it is some thick, nasty stuff. The deer have tunnels running under the vines and brush. Take a chain saw to clear shooting lanes. But there are deer in that stuff, they love it for bedding cover.

Having read everything ya'll have to say about this spot, what I once thought would be a fairly simple place to hunt (because there just isn't much wooded area) may in fact, turn out to be rather difficult..... Oh well....If this rain subsides, I'm going to check it out after work today....We'll see, but right now it's raining cats and dogs.....Really, I see them falling from the sky.......honest I do...... |
RE: How does this spot look?
Scott, thanks for reminding me to post this update.....I'm not sure why I didn't....
Anyway, I walked some of this property after work on Friday evening. W/out even making it to the levy, I saw 15 deer, 4 of which were pretty nice bucks. That pond in the photo is a wash out from the flood of '93, and it's a deep flippin hole.....But, there is KILLER bedding cover all around that pond. After seeing that, and all the deer, I'll wait for a north wind and slip into the woods behind that pond......OR, I might set up along the edge of a bean field I saw 8 deer feeding in....Hell, i don't know....This place is just friggin awesome....I don't know where I'll sit....I may actually lie flat on the levy the first evening and see if I can locate where the deer are moving from.... I never made it to the woods on this trip.....I saw pretty much all I needed to see and got the hell outta dodge.....This should be a really killer spot. I've been thinking about how the heck I'm gonna get all my stuff back there, and here's my plan...I have a cart I will strap my stand to, and my backpack will carry my bow....Problem solved....I'll just wheel it back there. Besides, when I kill that 135 back there, I'll need that cart to get his arse to the truck....:D |
RE: How does this spot look?
Sounds great mobow, remember to take a grunt tube and it's your year!
