RE: Unethical shot and won't even admit it!
If one is running at you that's a different story. You are shooting to protect yourself.
By the way. What's with him and the other guy running around? Is it supposed to add action and drama to the video? |
RE: Unethical shot and won't even admit it!
I'm sure a lot it was staged, don't know story behind the clip. The shot scene sure looks real to me though.
And yes, this was a self defense shot as was Howards charging lion shot. I've been to 3-d shoots where the boar shot is re-created.Check out Rick Welch's stuff though for non-charging head shots. If one is running at you that's a different story. You are shooting to protect yourself. |
RE: Unethical shot and won't even admit it!
I have more of a problem with the picture. No matter how you feel about hogs they are still an animal, and we still hunt them. Anything that is hunted deserves respect. Just because a hog is considered a lower form by us doesn't mean others will see it the same way. One simple word come to mind.
REPRESENT We as hunters don't need any bad representation from within, but it seems we just can't stop shooting ourselfs in the foot. |
RE: Unethical shot and won't even admit it!
Bob,
I'd probably be getting out of the way too. |
RE: Unethical shot and won't even admit it!
Critr-Gitr I noticed that you referred to wild hogs as a game animal. In Texas they are not. They are a feral vermin, not a game animal. They were first brought to this contry in the 1500's by the spanish. Hogs do BILLIONS of dollars of damage to crops, land, and other animals every year. They will kill and eat fawns, turkey eggs, and anything else they can find. Anytime there is a chance that a wild hog can be killed that chance needs to be taken. If there was a switch that I could throw that would kill everyone of them right now then I would throw it.

RE: Unethical shot and won't even admit it!
I mis-spoke calling them a game animal, I was typing fast and not paying attention. I do know the difference. As both a wildlife biologist and a landowner in the state of Texas, I am quite aware of all the facts you mention, plus quite a few more. At any rate, my point is that if you are sport hunting you should use ethics appropriate to that, and if you are doing population control work, then use the methods that will give you the best results. In my opinion, using the fact that they are feral to justify iffy shots is just making up excuses to compromise your morals. If you are serious about population control then use the proper methods and equipment to get the job done, which is not a bow.

If I am sport hunting and a population control opportunity comes up I'm taking advantage of it. They taste the same either way.

RE: Unethical shot and won't even admit it!
Critr-Gitr we are never going to agree on this, but thats ok I kind of like the discussion. And also when you respond this time there is no need to mention again that you are a land owner. I saw it the first time. Not that it matters but I am also a land owner. I have rasied catahoula dogs and bulldogs since the 80's. I have hunted hogs from here to Florida and back. I have had several days where we would remove 10 to 15 hogs in one hunt. I have absolutely no clue how many hogs I have caught over the years, but it is probably more then you have ever seen. You know what? none of this that I just posted matters at all when it comes to the question that you asked. Just like when you keep talking about about your credentials in ever post it really does not matter to me one way or another. The only interesting thing that you implied was in your comment about how you knew the things that I mentions, and quite a few more. Seems like you think you know more then me about wild hogs.....So I guess this is your chance to finally impress me. list out all of these facts that apparently I don't know. I also noticed that you are a wildlife biologist. Where's you degree from? When I was at A&M I knew quite a few folks in the wildlife program at the time. I got my degree in Agricultural Economics.

I won't mention any of that again then. One of the interesting things about internet forums is you don't always know who is actually reading the posts, and who is just skimming through catching the high points. Sometimes I even forget if I have already mentioned something, too many things going through my mind at once. I re-read what I posted, and I did get a bit snippy. Sorry about that, maybe I'm just a little edgy today. Degree is from WTAMU.
I read the link over on the other ethics thread about forum posting guidelinesand it made alot of sense to me, so at this point I will bow out without blowing this up any further on a personal level. Feral hogs will always be a sore subject in Texas. There are several sides to the issue and they do not all agree, and never will. Fact is, if me and you sat down with a beer, we would probably actually agree on 95% of it all. That is one thing I did learn in school, that ethics is strongly tied to wildlife, and tempers burn hot and fast depending on which side of the issue you happen to be on. In wildlife it seems we are constantly compromising due to multiple land use issues and groups of users. We ofter get hung up on technicalities and details, when really we are going in the same direction. I suppose I sometimes get tired of the endless compromise in my professional life, so when it comes to my personal life I tend to delineate boundaries quite sharply. We all have our faults I guess. |
RE: Unethical shot and won't even admit it!
I have never been to that forum so I have no name over there. Many years ago on another forum there was already a John_Nicholson so I became TX_Hoghunter. To keep it uniform I have since used that "name" on all of the hunting forums that I use.
Good luck killing hogs and don't drink too many cold beers....LOL. -john |
