Bow Hunting

Guys, I have to ask a question. Is bow hunting all that? I read about it, watch it on tv/videos all the time, but I have never taken the time to really try it. The leaseI hunt onin East Texas no one bow hunts at all and itis not really promoted. I personally want to try itbut do not know where to start. Any suggestions??

Thanks

IT is all that and then some! I've pretty much given up all my gun hunting for good. The only thing I can see myself taking with a gun in the future is turkeys and I just this year taken them with my bow as well. If you check out "Let's see what's on your walls" thread, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Starting out bowhunting? Well, depending on how you think you'll take into the sport you can go top of the line but why not find a perfect used bow that fits you to see if you want to jump in part time or totally. HNI's forum has a great classifieds as well as EBAY and ect...BUT, why not visit some of your local bow shops and get setup right with a reasonable bow.

We here in the Bowhunting forum can tell you, You will get hooked.

When bowhunting you can multiply that X 10 at least. You have to get them in close for bowhunting.

But be warned BOWHUNTING IS ADDICTING!!!!

Is it all that? Just look at the traffic in the bowhunting forum. And check out the contest thread above. IT IS MUCH MORE THAN ALL THAT!!!

Rob gave you good advice about getting started.

I watch hunting shows where guys shoot 100, 200 and 300 yds and think to myself why someone thinks shooting an animal that far away is anything of a challenge. I took my first deer last night and did it with a bow. I can now attest to one fact about bowhunting.....It's up close, personal and a full on heart pounding, breath holding, in your face adrenalin rush.

I haven't shot a gun in a couple years. And the last time I went hunting with one was about 4 years ago when I went squirrel hunting. I bow hunt for turkey and deer. And someday I hope to extend that to elk, bear and hog. I even take my bow into the woods during rifle season.

I second that, but there is a way bigger rush with a bow and i say that never having killed a buck with one yet.

I shot a couple of turkeys with a shotgun......and at the time thought I was having a great time hunting. I never took another big game animal until I took a small racked buck last year. I took 4 more deer with the bow, last Fall/Winter......and my first turkey with a bow, this past Spring.

WITHOUT A DOUBT.......hunting that spring bird on my home turf.....and taking him with a bow.....is the hardest thing I've done, hunting. It's also something I'm proud of.

I don't suppose I'll ever shoot a big game animal with a gun. I suppose I'll likely transition to hunting with a longbow in a few years.....maybe doing so, exclusively.

Get a bow. Shoot some targets. See for yourself.

Good luck.

Holy cow!! I did not expect this kind of response in such short time. I can honestly say I have never heard anyone get this excited about gun hunting, except maybe some hardcore duck hunting buddies of mine. Looks like it's time for me to pursue a new way of hunting.

Thanks Guys...

Bow hunting excites me because it is so much more than just waiting on deer to show up - it requires knowledge of your bow, of deer habitat and habits, of wind direction and scent control, of proper camo, and most of all it requires year-round practice! Once it gets in your blood it does not let go!!!

I think when you start bow hunting your idea of what makes a trophy will change.

Good Luck
