Archery range @ home

Ever since i've moved from the country to the city i haven't shot by bow once. i don't plan on hunting untill i've gotten more knowledge, a spot and equipment to hunt(Rocky Mtns) but the other day i was in my basement and after measuring the length (roughly 11 yards) I thought about putting in an archery range in my basement. what do u guys think? if anyone else has done think let me know(PM) or if you guys have any tips, or suggestions let me know, I'm not sure what type of material to use for a backdrop but i'll be shooting at the Block. any tips, ideas, material suggestions would be helpful

1/4" steel plate is a real good back stop;):):D

I like in the city and driving out to my parents everytime I want to shoot my bow can be a pain. Last winter I set up a range in my basement, I could bet about 12 or 13 yards I think. All I did was buy an american whitetail brand bag target that is I think 36" by 36" maybe a bit bigger than that and it only cost like $40. Ive been shooting at it since last winter and still havent had an arrow pock through the backside.

I have about11yd shot in my basement, concrete wall for a backstop. You will certainly improve on torquing your bow when you shoot at the bullseyes in the corner of the target. I also have a setup in our hallway thats only 8 yds. Nothing wrong with shooting in the house as long as everyone knows youre shooting, and you keep pets out of the way.

Over the winter I shoot in my basement. My Log home is 50' long, diag across I get just over 16 yards.

I shoot into my Morrell bag, A Morrell bag is a quick easy target for you and you can take it with you.

I have about a 17 yard shot when I shoot in the basement. I just open the door that leads into my garage for the extra distance. But I only do this when I have the vehicle out of the garage and then I pull the plug on the garage door opener so that nobody can enter. I don't get too concerned with grouping. I just do it to keep my muscles in shape.

my basement is 15 yards, i shoot with a couple pillows behind the target, our blackhole is pretty shot up so at those ranges the pillows REALLY take affect..

Check with your local police. Aroundhere,if your yard is fenced, and you have a proper backstop. You can pay $25 and get a permit to shoot. I shoot at about 25 yards and off the roof of my kitchen. Dont shoot a ton during the winter, but start again once it warms up some. Worth a shot to check it out.

Wow, I hope I don't have to pay to shoot in my back yard, or worse find its illlegal... I'm looking to close on a house in a couple weeks. I compromised, I wanted to be out in the boonies with woods behind me, ended up in a suburban neighborhood with a road behind the house, but its a pretty big back yard with a small buffer of woods between me and the road. I intend to shoot back there. I should get 30 yards or better. Maybe I should get off of HNI and look at town ordinances.

I have shot some in my basement also, but only when its raining.I can just about get a full 20 yard shot, and a few more if I was to shoot corner to corner.

I stay at about 16 yards though as shooting past my motorcycle and other toys made me alittle nervous. :D

In my yard I gota 10 yard, two 20's, 30, and 40 yards marked with blaze orange stakes. I just use my bow for this. For plinking with my .22 or whatever I got 80 yards marked off.

I live in the sticks, so no one cares what I shoot. If anyone pulled into my yard I would have better odds of them asking to join than asking me to stop making so much noise. ;)

Since there are thousands of bowhunters around Dallas/Fort Worthand only hundreds of them belong to the local clubs, there is obviously a lot of bow shooting going on at home. Few homes have basements in this part of the country so, just as obviously, most of that home shooting is done in the back yard.

I shudder to think how many of those are sky-drawing shooters, and how much risk they are taking by shooting in their yards. A sky-draw and a release malfunction, or even someone who draws properly butbreaks a string on release, can send an arrowoff intoparts unknownand somebody could easilyget killed.

Home ranges in the city, unless you're in the basement, aresimply not a good idea. Not to mention that I can't think of a single municipality around the areawhere it is legal to shoot a bow - or any'projectile firing device' as they usually word it around here - in the back yard.

I shoot 11 yards in my house and I use a bag target for fieldpoints and a block type target for broadheads. I use some old, rolled up carpet for a back stop should I miss, or to catch the arrow that penetrates through the target. 11 yards is OK for 10-20 arrows everyday to keep everything the way it should be, but it gets boring at times. There isn't much arch in archery when shooting 11 yards:D. The real fun is shooting at distances 30 yards and up.

I live in a pretty tightly packed neighborhood, but cleaned the brush completely out from one side of my house and that gave me about a 6 foot wide run down the right hand side if I'm facing the house. Ishoot right down this alley. There is a stockade fence across the 20' by 20' backyard. Threw up a few bails of hey and a deadstop target and if I shoot from the front corner of the house where the little run starts, i can go all the way out to 26-28 yards, but 20 yards or so keeps me out of just about everyone's sight.

I have 20 yards in my back yard, which is surrounded by a high cedar fence. In the winter, I can shoot out the front of my garage. I stand in the warm garage, hit the electric door opener, shoot a few shots, and then close the door before it gets too cold. :)

[/align]For a backstop try acardboard box filled with newspaper stacked verticaly [front to back on its edge] My father tought my mom to shoot her .38 in our living room. He used a t.v. box full of newspaper stacked just like that. If it will stop a .38 , it will stop an arrow.

who needs kevlar when you got newspapers....

I live in a app. building with a subterrain garage for everyone's car, so I have about 50 yards to shoot from.
I asked them when we had an owners meeting. I showed them my bow, everything's fine, I showed them the foam target, everything was still fine..
I shot from about 10 yards at the bull's eye and my arrow went half way through, everything wasn't fine from that point on....
Would have been my own private archery range for sure, perfectly lit, nice and warm......shame.....

That's awesome that so many people shoot in the house. if i use metal or wood for a backstop won't it damage my arrows?

Yes.................but thats better than yer wall!!!

Take it from someone who knows, a steel backstop is better than an arrow stuck in the wall and trying to explain that. I used to from my living room through the very narrow hall to a bedroom at night when my wife went to work. Shot tons of arrows and then one day, bam! Stuck one right in the wall for what ever reason. Kind of embarrasing, but it happens.

I can shoot 15 yards in basement.....and yes its fully finshed. I stood up a 4X8 sheet of 3/4" plywood up and then have a large foam block (its about 3' high and 2' wide. My kids shoot all the time......one 7 and one 9 years old and they've shot down there for a couple years. Its good practice, conditioning, and fabulous for tuning.

Good Luck!

I got chewed on pretty good, she didnt know I was shooting my bow in house until that. But I kept doing it for awhile after that and she was OK with it. Hey, if there is no where else to shoot then so be it. Luckily now I have a shop I can shoot in at night.

I have a few 4'X4'X3/4" sheets of plyboardspaced 2-3 inches appart as a back stop "for those just in case shots" against my back wall in my basement with my Block 4X4 target, & I also have my Guide Series Vital shooter bag that I hang up for Blind Bale shots.

My basement is only 8 yards "where I can shoot at that is" but I also can open the door & get up to 15 yards if I step out to my drive way.

With me going to work at 05:00 & get off at 14:00-16:00 & get my 2 lil ones till Moma gets home around 19:30ish doesn't leave me a lot of time during the week to practice outside "especially when my youngest is now 6 months" but the weekends I try to at least get a few hours in of aimed distance shots either at the club or in my back yard "where my max is 40 yards in my yard."
