Broadhead Injury's?
Whats the worst, you cut yourself with a broadhead?
I had an arrow laying on the back of my truck and put my hand down and laid my finger open pretty good.[:@] Nothing a little super glue couldn't handle. Anyone ever been shot by an arrow? |
RE: Broadhead Injury's?

RE: Broadhead Injury's?
This is really embarassing, but this year I used 2 blade gladiator mechanical tips. It was getting near end of legal shooting time. 3 does came in and behind some thick brush and timber I could hear some scraping and steps. I grabbed my bow and out pops a Lone Tom Turkey. I wanted to shoot him out of spite. I stood up (with the gladiator tip still on my rest) and went to adjust my back and stabbed myself in the backside of the knee. I got home and my pants were wet. I was lucky I didnt hit the popliteal artery back there. Nothing a little superglue didnt fix. The glue didn't fix my shamed ego when I told my wife the truth.:(

Cut it twice... now I wrap a rag around broadheads when taking them off;) |

I left a blood trail running to the bathroom then outta the house! |
RE: Broadhead Injury's?
I was very nearly shot by a customer at the gun shop I used to work at. Had one close call with a 12 gauge (which was beyondscary... had to take the rest of the day off to get the color back in my face after that one)and 2 other close calls with bows.
The one bow instance that comes to mind is when I was helping a fellow make his peep rotate squarely to his eye. I think I put a half twist in the string or something like that and handed him his bow back. I turned around to look for the blue Tru-Fire No Release (which is just a hook that simulates a release... for safety sake). This guy refused to draw his bow without an arrow on it... which is fine... but you have to take necessesary precautions. As I turned with that release in my hand.... whoooshhh.. right past my left arm and into the press went a Beman ICS Camo Hunter with a field point aboard... apparently some people get to eager and can't wait for the No Release. I have had a few customers flat refuse to use it... which doesn't sit very well with me. Other than that.... I was assembling a Muzzy a few years ago and my finger slipped.... Goat Tuff saves the day again. |
RE: Broadhead Injury's?
when i dont have a tool handy, i almost always end up with a nice little slice:) i usually carry a tool handy though...
watched my buddy slice up most of his fingers. he never heard of a tool for tightening heads...he didnt even know he cut half his fingers. they werent bad..but almost all his fingers were bleeding lol.. my old arrows were cut a hair past the prongs on my rest. bad i know...but saved me 100$ in arrows to get properly spined arrows...long story short, i drew back and over drew through the valley. head hit the prongs and flew off the rest and landed on my arm! somehow i was able to flip it onto the bow and let down...good thing i had on long sleeves...could been ugly... |
RE: Broadhead Injury's?
Not a broadhead injury, but still a taleworth telling - I almost killed a bow tech back when I was still a kid -around 1992. I'd just graduated from the recurve, and had saved up enough grass cutting money to buy a 60#PSE round-wheeled compound.
I'd always been a finger shooter, so the whole advent of the mechanical release was a big step. So,the guywanted to measure my draw length with a release and askedme to draw the bow back (with a Bear Crackshot release). Just as I got it back, he got his face and fingers in there - startedmaking markingson the shaft. I anchored the release on my cheek, and pushed the thumb trigger accidentally with my face. POW! Easton Gamegetter IIburied in the wall. Bow guy was white as a ghost -counting his fingers and his blessings. |

He was timing a bow and wanted me to make sure the cams were rolling over at the same time... and then if they were... mark the arrow so he could cut a dozen.... he was holding it back with his fingers..... I went to mark the arrow and was about 1/2 in away... thump.... it was pointed at the bag target... safety first of course. You could see the sharpie pen mark on the fletching of the arrow. I suspect there is still a stain on the floor where I was standing.... I made the boss get a ruler arrow after that one. |
RE: Broadhead Injury's?
I havent sliced my self on a broadhead but my dad has really bad. We were hunting and I was sitting to the side of him about 40 yards away and he drew back on a doe and the broadhead caught his finger while he was drawing back. He let go of the bow and sent the arrow flying way over the deer and tottally missed theher but the blood trail he left from the woods to the house was really bad.

RE: Broadhead Injury's?
A small cut on my finger which was nothing major.

RE: Broadhead Injury's?
Many years ago I leaned my bow (loaded) against my leg to do something in my treestand. As my bow started to topple I grabbed instinctively for the bow. As I watched my bow fall out of the tree I realized what I grabbed. I was squeezing the Muzzy broadhead. As I opened my hand to remove it, I had 3 deep cuts in my palm and fingers.
HHmmm what to do...wrapped a bandana around my hand, climbed down and got my bow and kept hunting. No, I went home with nothing but a cut hand that night. A little TLC, medical care and I was out the next day. :) |
RE: Broadhead Injury's?
I was practicing with my broadheads and yanked an arrow out the back of the target and put a 3"longx 1/2" acrossgash across the back of my hand. I could see all the moving parts in there, pretty cool (very purplely). And then there was this one time and idiot camp when I wasnt using a broadhead wrench and twisted my muzzy 4 blades off the arrow and half of my thumb went with it. No stiches in either one of them....I dont believe in stiches. HAHAHAHA.
|
RE: Broadhead Injury's?
Just the other day I was pulling a broadhead out of my target and like an idiot I had my hand in the way. As the broadhead came out it sliced right across my hand. Nothing major but I did felt dumb for even doing it.

RE: Broadhead Injury's?
I've gotten small cuts from tightening/loosening my muzzy heads. Nothing major, although the one cut bled for near an hour. I tried pressure, holding my hand over my head.. it took a long time to quit. Then about five hours later I bumped the wound open and bled all over, all over again. (no superglue around) [:-]
Down at a hog hunt this Spring, my hunting partner Kendall was using Wensel Woodsman broadheads. They are much more 'cut to the tip' than his regular hunting heads. He shot a hog but didn't get a perfect hit on it. It stopped just long enough for him to get another arrow out of the quiver. Then it ran off. Kendall ran off after it, arrow in hand. As they both bolted down the hill the arrow bumped a tree and drove the point partially into Kendall's thigh. He said it was just the lightest tap, but that's all it takes. Eventually the hog bayed up again (2.5 miles away) and Kendall was able to kill it. He had a hard time walking back to the lodge though. Luckily it was just a flesh wound. I happened to have sutures with me and a friend volunteered to tack him back together. We tease him about it. (pointy end goes that-away) Butin reality, itcould have been much worse and just shows how you really need to be careful out there. This is a Wensel Woodsman head: ![]() This is Kendall's thigh after the WW jab. |
RE: Broadhead Injury's?
never hurt myself bu thats not to say i wont in the future lol (knock on wood)
|
RE: Broadhead Injury's?
haven't hurt myself yet but i've heard a few stories.
one of the instructors at the bowhunting ed class worked in an archery shop w/an indoor range. one of the customors was trying to string his recurve by stepping on it and pulling the string with his hand. he pulled the bow back, it slipped, and his eye went flying down range.[&:] |
RE: Broadhead Injury's?
First year I hunted with archery tackle, I Was using Thunderheads. I was all excited since I was finally out hunting and all that, well, I went to get my arrow out to nock, and I laid my palm open real good. Long story short, I couldn't get the bleeding to stop and ended up in the ER for stitches! Since then, I haven't had any other accidents, but I've also been more attentive to what I'm doing.

RE: Broadhead Injury's?
I managed to cut myself last September in the excitement of this hunt.......check out my right index finger. (Those exposed blade style mechs are a treat after shooting Rockets for years and just grabbing them any which way.)
I was the victim of a Rocky Mt. Gator XP broadhead on this occaision. (however obviously I wasn't the only one;)) |
RE: Broadhead Injury's?
