RE: need TRUCK recommendation for bowhunting
For everyone who is complaining about American companies that have jobs outside our borders............and using that to justify a foreign car purchase I have one question for you.
Why do you think the big have been forced to do that?? Because you can't have it both ways...........if they are going to pay high wages and offer good benefits then people have to buy their vehicles..........and lots of them. Too many people buying foreign vehicles=not enough money to pay our workers at home.............so the jobs leave to places that are willing to work for minimum wage. All the foreign car buyers chased the American jobs away...............it's that simple. Support your neighbors and your country..........and stop being part of the problem. |
RE: need TRUCK recommendation for bowhunting
Here you go, find yourself an old Blazer. It gets over 20 mpg while going downhill.:DIt is very reliable, cheap to insure, parts are cheap and it easy to work on, and American made.Short wheel base goes anywhere and I have yet to get this girl stuck. 1977 Chevy Blazer.

HC that right there is a Texas rig. No doors so you don't have to waste time rolling down a window.[:-]
Atlas and I agree 100% on this one. Living in MI you have to see it to believe it. What some do not see is the jobs lost by suppliers. When a factory leaves it hurts the entire communty. Tax base, schools, resturants etc... Yes some other companies have plants here in US, but those could be companies from USA and not Japan. Black Monday I have see one here in the early 90's, when Willow Run Assembly was shut down.[:o] I took the call from my father and talk to my two uncles. What folks fail to see and this is what open my eyes. When they ship the jobs out to Mexico do you think they are going to sell you the car any cheaper? We have look inward for way to long here, it's time to help each other. Think about this in 1972 in Flint MI had over 18,000 GM employees, now less than 5,000[&o] Ok off my soap box |

RE: need TRUCK recommendation for bowhunting
For what you're looking for, you got 2 good options in my opinion:
1. 2005 or 2006 Toyota Tacoma extended cab or double cab, V6, 4x4 with low miles. You should be able to find one in the 23K - 25K range. You probably won't get 20mpg, though - figure on more like 18 average. 2. 2005 or 2006 Nissan Frontier extended or double cab, V6 4x4 with low miles. Pretty comparable to the Toyota although you may get slightly worse gas mileage. If you can find one where you live, it'll probably be slightly cheaper than the Toyota as well. I used to have a 95 Nissan 4x4 that I really loved - great truck that the salt from driving in the rust belt states took its toll on and I had to get rid of it. |
RE: need TRUCK recommendation for bowhunting
I've retired my F-150 and now drive a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. I have the extended cab version and I'm getting about 20 mpg, but thats probably because I drive like a nut and mostly local driving. The extended cab gets me and the family around, but a dual cab is probably more comfortable for the family. The tow package is rated at 6000 lbs. Also, its the sharpest lookin' midsized truck out there now :D

RE: need TRUCK recommendation for bowhunting
I would like to put the quality issue into perspective. For example, Toyota's sales goal this year for the '07 Tundra is 200,000 units, which they will probably achieve. Ford sold 800,000 unitsof the F150 in2006. Ford has sold 4x the trucks than Toyota. If you hear people complaining about a Ford truck more than aToyota, it is because their are more Fords. Ford will have 4x the issues. I use Ford as an example because they have had the best selling vehiclewith the F150 for a long time now.
I don't care what everyone drives. I personally like the newToyota and Nissan. A person needs to make an informed decision on their own needs. By informed I mean don't be seduced by the fancy advertising. Toyata says you can pull 10,500 lbs properly equipped. They don't tell you that the GVW of the vehicle is still 7000 lbs. Payload is a meager 1750 lbs. You cannot pull a gooseneck or fifth wheeltrailer carrying 10,500 lbs since 20 % tongue weight is transferedoverthe bed. That would put you at 2100 lbs, 350 lbs over. That's not including you, passangers, tools, materials, or additional accessories. |
RE: need TRUCK recommendation for bowhunting
Its not a pickup unless it has a solid front axle. :D
I've been a die hard Ford guy my whole life, and when I went to town to buy a new Ford this is what came home with me. ![]() 2007 Dodge 2500HD, 5.9L Cummins - My best tank so far has been 19.2mpg, and my worst tank was 13.7 when I was pulling a 12,000lb load 110 miles. This truck is going to get up to 22mpg once it gets broken in, right now I only have 1780 miles on it. It rides just as good down the highway as my 2003 F150 SuperCrew, and if you lined it up on the asphalt with any gas 4x4 stock pickup, it'd smoke it. Hardcore - When did you ditch your doors and add the BFGs to your Blazer? I'd be willing to bet that is a fun ride on the trails in your new home state of Colorado! I'll come wheeling with ya as soon as I get my truck camo-ed up. We'd hate for the Chevy guys to see a Ford pulling ya ;) ![]() That rig gets 20mpg as well, all you have to do is pop it in neutral an push it down a hill :D |
RE: need TRUCK recommendation for bowhunting
I bought the same thing a week ago. Mine is white though lol. First tank I got 17.5. I am still on my second tank with 800 miles. My lie-o-meter is saying 20.0 mpg. It is about 1-2 mpg off.

RE: need TRUCK recommendation for bowhunting
Whatever you do get a crew-cab or four door...
I have an 07 chevy 1500 crewcab, and love it... mileage isnt bad at 16 mpg for a 6.0L @367hp..... but you can get them w/ the V6 that will have much better mpg. Plus, Car&Driver ranked it higher than Nissan & Toyota[8D] |

RE: need TRUCK recommendation for bowhunting
As someone who purchases 20+ trucks a year.....I can tell you what my next one (and subsequent) will be........Toyota. I've got 104,000mi. on the current Tundra....and I'll rotate it to the field in about 15,000 more miles.....where it will be utilized until it reaches 200K+. I've replaced......Tires...and 1 set of brakes.
If I'm not mistaken.....it's built right here in the good ol USA.....by US workers....and the wages those US workers earn are helping drive the US economy as much as Detroit wages (except the Toyota's probably outselling them). The tax base generated by the Toyota plants are doing the same. I have to make a business decision when it comes time to buy vehicles. That's all it is, to me. if I got the same bang for our co. buck buying something else....I would. I see a big ol new tundra in my early '08 future. |

IF your looking for something to pull with and drive around i recommend a diesel. They last longer, better gas milelage, way more power, and they hold there overall value prety well. Diesel is the way to go, my boss pulls a 26,000 pound trailer about 100 miles every day and he gets 15 with the trailer loaded and around 22-24 unloaded. Now Thats Efficiancy.

I love it when people tell others how to spend their money. No stake, whatsoever.
My family's served our country proudly. To question someone's patriotism.....due to a choice in a vehicle....is so damned ridiculous....it's pathetic. I've got a SONY walKman radio....a Suzuki ATV......Nikon Binoculars....and probably more things made in foreign countries than I can list off memory. Stay here and hunt our bears instead of going to Canada! Do you see how freakin ridiculous that sounds? It's absolutely childish. |

I spent 20 years in the military, still work for uncle sam, and recently volunteered for a 6 month stint in baghdad starting in feb 08 (well after bow season...I'm not that crazy) and as mentioned before, drive a Toyota Tacoma that I absolutely love. Does that make me less of an American? It's ridiculous. I could buy american...but to me a quality product and higher resale value down the road put money in my pocket. Why through money down the crapper and claim to be patriotic. Just my 2 cents. |

But when you can't compete in terms of quality and value, and you have promised so much of your company to the unions that you can barely break even on the vehicles you manage to sell, all thats left is to appeal to the fact that 30 years ago, the company made vehicles here in the good ole U S of A! This isn't coming from a import owner either, I have an F150 and my brother has a Suburban...this is just the truth...the Nissan/Toyotas out there are better. |

I work for the US Navy at a warfare center. Last week I conducted a tour for the US Foreign Military Sales program office. In case you didn't know, we have been selling military systems to Japan, but I wouldn't wanna hijack a thread regarding someone's decision on buying a truck. I happen to know people (american people) who work in america, building Toyota trucks. I loved my ford, but when it was time to get a new truck, I went with a Toyota. I simply felt it was the best out there.
