Winner's Choice; Quality Bowstrings?

So, as some of you know I recently upgraded my stock Bowtech strings to Winner's Choice. Because this is what we sell in our store, I figured it best to represent that company rather than shoot a Bucknasty (sorry Gibblet.)

I've got probably 500+ shots through this string since upgrading and here are the results;

Bottom cam;

Top cam;

After contacting WC yesterday [Noah was their service rep, for those of you familiar with WC customer service], I was informed that nothing but a burr on my cam would cause their X-Coat serving to fray like this. Well, the stock Bowtech strings (both sets I've shot) didn't fray anything like this.

Alright, no big deal. I took the bow in to work with me today, tossed her on the press and pulled the cables. Guess what? No burrs, Noah.

So, should I contact WC tomorrow and demand new cables? Should I perhaps switch to a different brand?

What would you do?

I should also mention archery season opens September first.

I would contact him and tell him you want new ones. Theres no reason for a string to do that if theres nothign wrong with your cams..and what are the odds of both being messed up anyway? Especially when your stock string was fine on there. I would not be happy after spending the money to upgrade. Hopefully they will take care of you.

I'd wonder why I was having serving separation issues with the first set of stock strings on this bow.....and why I was having similar issues with a new set of strings and cables.

THEN....I might blame the strings and cables.

Oh i was unaware that he was having serving separation issues with the orginal set? Is that the case Wash?

Jeff, I think he said that he stock set didnt fray at all

Wait till the x coat starts to peel where it goes through the cable guard and makes a chattering noise when drawing. That's when you will know you got your moneys worth out of it......[8D]

How many times do we have to mention... Gibblet?

RE: Winner's Choice; Quality Bowstrings?

Jeff, the serving separation was over the top portion of the cam, if I remember correctly. I don't believe that it was where the cable connected to the cam. I could be mistaken, but it was a few months back. In either case, it was a separtation issue and not a fraying issue.

RJ, the entire cables aren't coated with X-Coat. X-Coat is something you have to request specifically anymore, I was smart enough not to request it. Noah mentioned it as what they wrapped the loops with.

Rev, as I mentioned, because of where I work and what we carry and how often I have my bow at work with me, I felt it best to use what we carry. I understand that Gibblet makes good quality strings. I understand the fact that he is a member here and we should definitely support him. However, we carry Winner's Choice and not Bucknasty strings.

RE: Winner's Choice; Quality Bowstrings?

I only mention it Wash.....because it isn't the first string/cable issue you've had with an '07 bow. Something sounds fishy.

That's all.

You've had an '07 bow in a press a bunch of times it seems. I was just pointing out the fact that I'd wan tto be SURE it was the strings/cables.

Good luck.

RE: Winner's Choice; Quality Bowstrings?

I would be more concerned if it were the same issue. The fine folks here at HNI attributed the last issue to the stock strings; happens to just about everyone.

I don't know. All I know is season is ten days away and this isn't kosher.

Demand replacement.I used to use Winners Choice but went with Vapor trail this year. Awesome string and no waiting on the order. To your door in two days instead of two weeks like a winner choice takes.

RE: Winner's Choice; Quality Bowstrings?

happens to just about everyone.

I wasn't aware they were having issues with their strings/servings. Mine's fine.....same bow. That's the third set of strings/cables on an '07 bow.....and I have no idea how many times it's been in a press. Mine's been in one time.

If I were a detective......I'd simply want to make sure of the culprit before I made an arrest.

RE: Winner's Choice; Quality Bowstrings?

I've used Winner's Choice strings on a number of bows and haven't had anything but good things to say about them, but they are insanely expensive considering there are Bucknasty strings and cables, Vapor Trail strings and cables, and other alternatives that are of the same quality for nowhere near the price.

Considering you had these alternatives and chose to represent WC for your shop they should give you a new set no questions asked. Hopefully they'll come through and do the right thing for you.

RE: Winner's Choice; Quality Bowstrings?

Mine are perfect, and I've put well over 1000 shots through it so far this summer.

This is what they looked like the day I got them - and they still look the same. I am getting a little fuzzing on my serving at the nockpoint, but I haven't waxed it in a while.

Sounds like a factory defect to me - I'd get the replacements.

RE: Winner's Choice; Quality Bowstrings?

Gee quick... that looks a lot like a bow I've got too....

Same deal with the strings... no issues at all...

Wash I honestly don't think I've ever seen a string do that in that location on the cam studs. It may not be a burr, it just may be a fairly acute angle in the back... but as Jeff wrote, if you are on your THIRD set of strings on a 2007 bow then either something is wrong with the bow, or you are not caring for your strings properly. One way or the other, whether its a user issue or an equipment issue... something isn't right, and just replacing a string/cable isn't going to solve it.... its just a bandaide on a bullet wound.

RE: Winner's Choice; Quality Bowstrings?

Yes, this is the third set, two factory, one Winner's Choice.

The first set of factory strings was replaced with the second after I noticed separation over the top of the cam. After talking about it on here, Gibblet informed me that it happened on quite a few stock strings. The member you all keep mentioning said it was normal. I did not purchase this set. We had a spare set at work.

The Winner's Choice strings (I've gone with them in the past; I still have a set on my Jaguar) are less than a month old. I did not pay full price; I paid shooter's cost. This was a custom color set for less price than I could have purchased either a Bucknasty or Vapor Trail.

As for not taking care of my strings properly...

Anyway, I'll contact Winner's Choice this morning and get a new set of cables in the mail.

You'd be suprised how many people don't wax their strings as often as they do their car. Keep in mind none of us have ever met you, so we don't have any clue as to how knowledeable or ignorant you are about bow work/repair/maintence.

Just trying to help you figure out a problem, and quite often its just something simple that gets casually or mistakenly overlooked... keep on like you are... I'll talk to you in another month when you are on set #4.

Swamp, trust me, I replace at least two strings day that look like lines of fuzz. I know all about proper string maintainance.

Are you going to put your new strings on with the same cams, have you thought about changing them to see if that truly is the problem?

I haven't had any issues with serving seperation on my '07 Allegiance after a ton of shooting. I was told by the shop that if i would switch at all go with WC. However, he told me that the factory Bowtech strings are considered pretty good and the only reason to switch would be for a color variation.

I was told the same thing....after I almost took the factory strings/cables off when I bought my bow to have WC put on it.

Let me ask you this.......if your fan belt on your truck kept having issues.....would you question the faulty belts from two reputeable mfr's.....or would you check your fly wheel (and if there are any mechanics in the house....I'm not sure that's correct...but I think you get the jist)? I'm not accusing you of anything Wash. you seem to know your bow stuff.....but you also seem to tinker with it a LOT.

Does your bow shop sell Bowtech? I'm trying to figure out why you'd switch to a string they sell (when nothing was wrong with the one you had).....but might not even be shooting a BOW they carry. (???)

Too mnay questions for me to even make a guess what's going on....but I'd say it isn't common among '07 Ally owners.

Good luck with your dilemma.

Well I'll trust another thing too... and thats called common sense...

If I had purchased a bow from a shop and was on my third set of strings already... and the tech told me to get another set.... I'd probably start to think it might not be just the strings that needed replacing....

You aren't talking to some common idiot here, I'm no Randy Ulmer or Pete Shepley or Bob Foulkrod, but I make my living the same way you do, and I've been doing it longer than you have been wearing big boy pants.

The way you solve a lot of problems in archery is to start at the beginning and go through step by step.... everybody makes mistakes... and everybody misses something now and again. I rarely go to work without learning something new each day, even if its small... but as soon as you start thinking everyone else is ignorant in your holy presence, or that you might not be the problem, you are going to end up with one blowing up in your face.

I have a younger kid who works for me that thinks he knows everything. And for his age, he really isn't bad. He has lots of bias' againest companies, but I'm sure nobody on this forum knows what thats like....:D

In the last three months this kid has ruined one customers Hoyt by pressing it incorrectly (bent the riser in half), cut two bowstrings so that they broke 5 shots after serving/peep install(one with blade and one with flame), cracked a limb on a brand new Martin, and the funniest one was him trying to tell Rodger Willet (who just tied the national record in Men's Archery in Manassas, VA in July, and won a gold for three man team at the FITA World's in Germany) that he didn't know what he was talking about in reference to back tension shooting. We are still ribbing him for that one...I'm working on bringing him back down to earth... he's a good kid with a good heart... but he is 19.. and 19 y.o. kids know everything, just ask one.

I'm not saying your string isn't defective, or that you did anything wrong, or that your bow is messed up. What I am saying is that nobody, including you, knows exactly what is wrong. Without seeing it, I can only help lead you down a path that I've found answers along. Something tells me that Winners Choice knows a thing or three about strings and why they do what they do. You might want to listen up when they talk.

3 sets of different strings replaced due to defects on the same bow in less than 7 months points to the bow or the Indian replacing the strings.

X-cote is very slick and very thin but it is not great in the abrasion resistance department when it comes to sharp corners like what is on cam posts. In other words it cuts easily.

If you have removed the loops from the posts several times this will definetly cause x-cote to fray like yours are doing. The last time I read the instructions WC had this information printed about the X-cote.

I would demand a new string. Here is my winners choice. I have well over 500 shots thru it.
