RE: P & Y stats
Some interesting stats there Germ, Glad to see Indiana improving in those stats. Dam, i keep hearing that the OBR is not working for Indiana, I personally think it does, coupled with the many land leases that are a trend in my area, people have gotten more picky with what they shoot since they get only one buck tag, and are letting them grow to potential. I know, i have eaten tag soup several times waiting on the big boys and giving the smaller ones free passes.again interesting.

RE: P & Y stats
I find those stats very interesting. I always wonder how far up the ladder they have to go to get those gems. I know there is extra info on the affidavit that is sent in to the P&Y clubbut what does one have to do to get access to such info...
In the late 90's I know the average distance that most P&Y's were killed was under 20 yards, something like 18 yards or so. Could technology ( better equipment and/or skill) be pushing the ability to make a killing shot farther than in days gone by or is it something else? Dunno I thought the 38% (4-6 PM) evening kill figure is an interesting one. We have had this discussion before and as I recall most herefelt more big bucks were killed in the evening than in the AM. I guess I buck (no pun intended) that trend personally, over 70 % of the P&Y bucks I have killed have been in the AM. This makes me wonder...could the P&Ykill figure be higher in the 4-6 PM hours because more guys hunt the evening than do the AM? In other words during the rut I know a lot of guys that get home from work and head for the woods. They are unable to hunt the AM during the work week...Just thinking out loud. |
RE: P & Y stats
Yes the 4 to 6 was shock to me also.
TV guys state 10-2 is the best time. I also found the stats for KY and IN to be very telling when a state is focused on good deer management |

RE: P & Y stats
There seems to be some confusion as to where the buck was killed but most still think it came from the pennyrile wma in ky.

RE: P & Y stats
When the days are hot and the Bucks are still hanging around together in bachelor groups, the evenings always workedbetterfor me catching them moving from Bedding to feeding areas ( and they usually dont move far),with little to no movement at daybreak.
As a chill clings to the morning air and themonth of Oct draws to an end, the rub and scrape lines begin getting active, and I start hunting the mornings trying to catch them finishing up their rounds befor moving back to their bedding areas. I, like most, probably hunt twice as many evenings as I do mornings. SoI can only assume thats where the high % of Kills in the P&Y listings come from. I did take a 150 class Buck off public hunting land in Kansas at around 1:30 in the afternoon when I figured out he was cleaning out the scrapes inbetween my morning and evening hunts. |
