i spined one this year 2 more inches of ducking and he would still be out there. i was pulling 66 pounds and shooting a 100 grain steelhead at 15 yards. the tip of the head made it all the way through but that was it. i had to unscrew my arrow. there was no getting it out. i ment to save that portion of the spine and forgot. he dropped imediatly and within seconds the second arrow finished the job.

I have spined two deer. both with Muzzy 3 blade 100 grn heads. One both arrows weighed 450 grns, one was a carbon Acc, the other a 2314 aluminum. Both arrows penetrated about 12". The spine is very tough, and both arrows broke off as the deer hit the ground. I guess what I am saying in a long winded way is yes, your results are typical with my findings.

im new to bow hunting and was wondering for all you guys to do it it kinda sounds like you done it on purpose...did you aim for the spine?? or was it all an acident..hit a branch...hit to high or something?ive never heard of bowhunters aiming for the spine like that..but than again i dont know jack about bow hunting yet..thats why im here....thanx

100% accident for me. A combination of being 25ft up the tree and the deer being 15yds, thus creating a fairly steep angle and also ducking the arrow slightly.

The only expeience I have with spine hits was with a dead 6-point I found laying out in the middle of an open field. I walked over to check it out, noticed a small wound high on it's back, and dug out the front 2" of an aluminum shaft along with a 100 grain Thunderhead. Someone apparently hit it from a treestand, but the arrow lodged in the vertebrae before ever reaching the spinal cord. I suppose infection took over eventually.

ditto that, an extreme downward angle on my ram and a slightly higher then desired shot placement and wammo, spine shot! Figure it was 10 feet down 3-4 yards off the base of the rock I was standing on. even with my "less then proficent equipment" (as its put on this board) it sounds I have had more luck in penetrating an even larger animals spine then most here (hmm didnt we just see a 3 paged post on penetration and how to get it, might want to pay attention next time something like this happens!)....was it luck, you be the judge, I know the answer!

I spined a doe in 2001 and the 100 gr thunderhead on a 2117 alum went in about 3 inches and fell out. She dropped on the spot and the next arrow took her out. I was 20' up and she was about 5 ft out.

Well I spined a doe this year at 22 yards, she jumped the string and I hit the end of her shoulderblade and deflected up into her spine, it shattered the vertabrae, but didn't go through. I was shooting a 20 year old black bear with 65 pounds draw weight and 100 grain spitfires, they did a great job, opened all the way up one blade cut all the way through the shoulder blade before the tip shattered the spine.

I shot a doe last year and hit it in the spine on accident. I was using carbon express 400 with 75gr. muzzy's. the head deadcentered the vertebrea and penetrated far enough to allow about 4 inches of arrow to hang out on the opposite side.
70# high county ultra force mx1 cam, 31.5" CX 400 arrow, 75gr. muzzy, 308 fps.

she dropped where she stood. I heard stories about spine hit deer running away so I shot her again while she was on the ground. I deadcentered another vertebrea busting all the way through and buried itself in the opposite side sholderblade. NOTHING on the head broke, NOTHING.

the shot was at 22 yds, I was about 12 up a tree.
