another CNN hit on hunting
there is an article by Rick Reilly of Sports Illistrated posted on CNN website 12/20/2002 in the inside_game/rick_reilly/news section really slamming hunters. A total mock job to make us look like blood thirsty killers with no concern of wildlife. We all know that hunters have done more for wildlife habitats than anyone and our money pays for the bulk of it. We need to all send an e-mail to voice our opinions. Once again CNN and Sports Illistrated have used the forum of liberal press to push our society left of center. The piece is titled "Fair Game". He mocks our hunting techniques of fair chase by listing the gear we use as something out of star wars, implying that the deer have no chance. Obviously he's never spent a single day in the brush. I guess you are only civilized if you spend your weekends sitting on the couch, in front of the tube sucking down beers and giving testosterone driven yells when SOMEONE ELSE performs well. I guess to be civilized you have to be a voyeur instead of have a hobby where you actually participate. I'm really sick of these liberals mouthing off as the moral equivilant of what America should be about.

RE: another CNN hit on hunting
THWACK, it would be nice if we could just say consider the source and blow it off but we cant because people actually take what Rick Reilly or other TV personalities say as gospel.
You are right, we all need to let S.I. know the truth about hunting and fishing and that we are the reason that game species that were once endangered are thriving today because of the funds generated by us hunters who care more about wildlife than the antis ever did or ever will care about. These people really Pi$$ me off. |

RE: another CNN hit on hunting
THWACK...I know of the article you are speaking of and when I read it I laughed. I do not think Reilly was attacking hunters but rather was attacking the direction in which "hunting" is heading. He poked fun of all of the high-tech gear heads that buy every single gimmick and try to buy themselves into becoming an image of a he-man hunter. Unfortunately I know too many of these slobs that have little if any respect for wildlife and they "buy" everything they can to tip the odds in their favor when hunting. He mentioned ZERO about bowhunters if my memory serves me correctly. He was only reminding us to try and "keep it real" and to avoid the commercialism of hunting and to stick to the basics rather than spending your way into enjoyment of wildlife and the outdoors. Just my opinion but I think you missed the jist of his message. Read it again and tell me what you think.

Go ahead and check the CNNSI website @ http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/siadventure/ and you will see that they are not anti hunting. You have options of clicking on links to outdoor hunting, fishing, ect.

Heres the article. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/ins...ly1/index.html
I dont think his point is aimed at strictly gun hunters. There are alot of high tech gadgets in bowhunting. I do understand the point he's trying to make , but I dont agree with the way he's trying to make it. Edited by - bowfanatic on 01/03/2003 19:22:53 |
RE: another CNN hit on hunting
I sent this e-mail to the link you gave THWAK. Thanks
You have got to be joking right!! First in your first paragraph the 30 - 40 rounds in a magazine is Illegal and 30 - 40 shots in 10 seconds would be on the same scale as fully automatic and guess what, that too is illegal. Firing 5 shots out of a Browning BAR is pretty impossible to do accurately in 10 - 15 seconds much less in 2 seconds. Obviously you have never tried to shoot one. Hunting at night with an infrared scope as you call it, Is illegal also. It's not infrared it's called night vision. There is a difference if you were to actually read up on them. The only night hunting that is legal would be for some varmints and raccoons. The Holo sight does not project a laser anywhere, that too is illegal. It simply uses a red dot within the scope itself instead of conventional crosshairs. As for using scents, calls and warm camouflage clothing go back in time for hundreds of thousands of years and you will find out that since the dawn of man we have been dressing in fur of animals for camouflage, using "calls" of some sort and using urine for scent. Also have you ever sat out in sub zero temperatures with only a t-shirt and shorts on? You should try it sometime! I personally have never looked at a deer's face when it got shot and I don't think any other hunters have either. Radios and GPS, Have you ever been lost in the mountains miles from anything? You'll wish you had a GPS or radio to get out! In many states using the motion decoys to hunt water foul is illegal also. Here is another good one, using an eight wheeled vehicle to shoot deer on the run. First of all that too is illegal, to fire a gun from a vehicle. Second have you ever tried to chase down a running animal of any kind? GOOD LUCK! Finally 99.9% of us hunters don't hunt in your "canned" hunts, we actually do prefer to get close to the game and actually go one on one with the animals. One more thing, hunters have done more for the animals that we choose to hunt than any other group of people out there PERIOD. Try adding up all of the taxes, fees, licenses, money donated, etc... The list goes on and on. We hunters across the nation spend and donate billions of dollars annually to help the wildlife and the land they live on. Maybe you should try hunting some time and actually get involved instead of criticizing. Kerry |

RE: another CNN hit on hunting
Wolfen, I read the article twice and couldn't see where he was making fun of high tech hunting. He was making a mockery of the sport we love, making us all look like complete and total morons, who kill game, instead of hunt it.
I don't know anywhere where it's legal to use that much ammo. CNN not anti-hunting? I don't really care if it's Sports Illistrated or not, I believe that if it's got a CNN in front of it, then it's more then likely liberal enough to be anti-hunting. They may just link to Field and Stream and such to shut us (hunters) up. That article hacks me. What a punk... Peace Through Strength |
RE: another CNN hit on hunting
I maintain that the article is funny knowing the many loser worthless phonies that this article describes. bigbulls...yes many of the things suggested in the article are illegal but unfortunately that is how many loser slobs "hunt". Sure it wasn't a warm and fuzzy article about the great ethical hunters of North America but it contains a strong message and hopefully strikes a nerve with many weekend warrior high-tech slobs that do more to harm this sport than this simple article does. Hmmmm...I use none of the techniques he describes...do all of you who are upset about this article "hunt" using any of them?

RE: another CNN hit on hunting
What was failed to be said in any of the replys is that 99% of the things mentioned in the article are things that pochers do. When you reply simply state that what the author seems to think that Hunters and pochers are one and the same I for one take offence to this. Then state that this author needs to get his facts straight and to learn the difference .

RE: another CNN hit on hunting
I see hunters saying worse about each other evry week.Remember how upset you are the next time someone starts a thread about baiting, crossbows etc. etc:
|
RE: another CNN hit on hunting
That article is defintatly antihunting.PERIOD.
|
RE: another CNN hit on hunting
Um...nope, I don't use a single one of them believe it or not. I use a climber treestand, the closest thing I use to a heater is Hot Hands. I use a 30-06 to hunt deer and yotes, it has only a 4-round clip. I don't have squat for money, so I can't afford to pay for a hunt, and my fourwheeler doesn't have squat on it, I have to use a sling or bungee cords to carry stuff on it.
Not a single thing on that list describes me...but I still think it's anti-hunting. I can't really see how it's not, and though it is humorous, it's a cheap shot to make us all look bad. Peace Through Strength |
RE: another CNN hit on hunting
Yes there are "slobs" out there that use any and all of the things in the article, but, as was stated in someones post, those people are poachers and there should be a very real distinction made between us and them.
The only things that I use from the article would be warm camo W/O scent lock, elk bugle/ cow call, and elk urine. NO 4-wheelers, tree stands, decoys, etc... |
RE: another CNN hit on hunting
Read the article in sports illustrated. Made me raise a brow as to what exactly he was stating and what his stance on hunting is. I guess it's not cool in the mainstream to hunt anymore. Nevertheless, you will still often find me in the tree with bow in hand fellas

RE: another CNN hit on hunting
Don't you think that if he says this about hunting, he also agrees that we should all sell our cars and go back to the ways of walking or horse and buggy? Or maybe we should tear down our modern built homes and make mud shelters or teepees or something. We would have to go back to using natural things for transportation, entertainment, shelter, and everything else. That reminds me, he would have to grow his own food, instead of eating at fancy restaurants (sp?). Going back to entertainment, He wouldn't be able to even write about sports anymore or work for a big company like he does because football the way it is today wouldn't even exist. Maybe something like it, but definitely not the kind with 250$ shoes and 100 million dollar salaries. I mean seriously, WHAT IS WRONG WITH USING TECHNOLOGY? I'm not saying I agree with some of the stuff in his article but, do you think he would say anything about the cavemen figuring out how to make and shoot a bow instead of using throwing spears?

RE: another CNN hit on hunting
You may be right Wolfen68 but if I took it wrong then so did a dozen of my Air Force people, including my Chief Master Sergeant (who brought it to my intention) I respectfully disagree that he was trying to show where hunting was going, he was mocking hunters period.
If that many people read it that way then enough people out there saw negative for it to hurt our sport, bowhunting or not. THWACK! |
RE: another CNN hit on hunting
One more thing. The North American Hunt Club has this article listed in it's website with the title something like Sports Illistrated Anti hunting article. I wasn't the only one to see this the way it was intended.
