Natural mineral licks...pic
My wife and I were out bear baiting yesterday and were driving by one of the natural mineral licks up here and decided to stop and take a pic. I should take a sample sometime and have it tested to see what minerals are in it. Would be interesting.
Anyone else have any natural mineral licks near them? ![]() |

None that I know of on our lease in central NC...I have always been intrigued by natural mineral licks, when Daniel Boone was going from NC into Kentucky he found several...

Cool pic dan.
It would be interesting to know the mineral composition. Apparently they like that one. Is that clay and rocks? What type of soil? |

Why I put out minerals......(and I've never seen a 'natural' mineral lick. Cool stuff, Dan).
I read an article last year that documented deer traveling TWO MILES at night to frequent a mineral lick. I know it's good for 'em.....but the less the deer I'm hunting travel....the better I think my chances are. |

This is one of three within about 200 yrds of each other. Crazy thing is, this one was about 1/4 that size 2 years ago. It keeps growing and growing, I'm sure because of rain water leeching it.
There are a total of 5 that I know of off the top of my head....I'll try to get pics of a couple more when I head out bear baiting again tomorrow. Lebeau, it is dense clay with a few rocks mixed in. |

That is a huge natural lick Dan. Would love to see you set up a cam on it.
This is a natural lick that I found close to home last week: ![]() Here is one I found two years back, in 2005: Here is that same lick this year, after I added mineral blocksto it. Great pic Dan, and beautiful wife. I've found that moisture seems to make a tremendous difference in the quality of these natural licks. This year there has been virtually no moisture. It's frustrating. |

Cool picture Dan.....it would be really neat to set up a trail camera there just to see what different types of animals have traveled there to use the mineral lick!
|

Wow, really shows how important minerals are to the animals.

What often looks like a natural mineral lick in idaho...Was initially 200 lbs of rock salt 10 yearsprior.. LOL :D I found a wicked one.. a few days ago scouting a new mountain, its been around for years and is a huge crator like you guys are showing..elk, deer and moose tracks all over it..Here it could be cattle based orignally since this area is a heavily used open cattle range spot, but do to its location I am pretty sure its was man-ip-ulated..for wapati;)

The owner of our local bowshop found one!
HUMUNGOUS!!!!!!!!!! It is like a HUGE rock or hill of some mineral and you can see where the deer scrape, lick, and kneel down in it. Absolutely awesome! defenitely a money saver! good luck |
