New Bowhunter Need Help!
Hi fellas,
I'm looking at buying my first bow next Wednesday. I have never held a bow or shot one. I'm hopeing a Mathews Drenalin or Hoyt Vextric will fit me. With that being said how will I know when a bow fits me properly??? I've been told a bow outfitted with top of the line accessories can cost as much as $1600 is this true??? Furthermore, If I practice every day with my bow from now until November do you think my shooting ability will be good enough to shoot a whitetail?? If I feel that my abilities are not up to snuff to harvest a deer I'll just wait until next fall. Thanks |
RE: New Bowhunter Need Help!
Go to a proshop an do a lot of listening an try to choose a bow setup that is not real pricey since you are just starting out. Shoot a few an see which one feels good to you, main thing is get your draw length right. If you like bow hunting in a few years you can sell the one you have a buy a new one.
With a lot of practice an you get a bow that you like an is setup for you you should be ready in 3 months to give it a try. |

You can even check w/the proshop regarding having them do lessons w/u 2 get u set up for the fall. Practice hard, u might be able 2 pull it off.

RE: New Bowhunter Need Help!
Go to a good Archery Shop and check out the Bows that you mentioned and try some others out while your there.TheArchery Shop should measure you for the correct draw length and then go from there to try out the Bows you are considering buying. Some Bows are set up with the basic equiptment and you can up-grade or try out other options you may like better? When first getting into Bow Hunting you can go all out and spend a lot of money or be conservative and go with the basic neccessities until you know your going to stay with Bow Hunting then add to your equipment/Bow as you keep hunting.Be sure to ask plenty of questions here first and ask any good close friends what they would reccomend?
Not to be nosey...but how old are you and how long have you been hunting? |

Hi newbie!!
welcome to the dark side of life !!! you have good questions, first ask around your area with other bowhunters on who they feel is the best bow shop, then go in and explain to them that you have never shot a bow then hang on!!!!!!! no i'm kidding !! If this guy is good he will measure you first to get your draw lenght this is paramount!!! next i would tell you don't invest $ 1600 into something you don't know if you will like it or not...... if it were me and where i work i would ask you your buget then we start from there i might talk you into something used first since your not sure about the sport,,, if you get into it then thats the time to upgrade maybe someones used outback ,or switchback or older bow model just to get you into the sport with out breaking the pocketbook if you don't like used then a new lower end bow like bear code ,instinct, truth, or parker bow mathews new line mission bows all around the 399 price range then with accessories whisker bis, arrows and release your out of there 600-700 dollarsor less depending on what you buy but thats me but i would get you to shoot a lot of bows first and then decide on what feels good to you this way you also get a lesson on how to shoot while your shooting...hmmmmm and as for hunting in nov. that is an ethical question only you can answer if you practice till then sorry for long winded answer hope this helped!! good luck you can alway pm me for specific questions!!! |

Thanks BuckinRut....I was just wondering if you will stick with Bow Hunting and how long you have been hunting over-all? Bow Hunting can be very challenging and takes a lot of patients, when I first started I bought a used bow and hunted for 2 years with it until I knew I was hooked and decided to invest money in a new bow.It wasn't until my 4th year Bow Hunting that I finally shot my first deer (a 6 point Buck).I had several close encounters with Deers as I bow hunted and a few misses, but time and hard work finally paid off last October when a Buck walked under my climbing stand and I shot him 1/4 -ing away at about 15 yards.I have always Rifle Hunted for Deer over the past 30+ years and I must say Bow Hunting is an adrenaline rush beyond compare! ;)
Good Luck and practice a lot if you get yourself a Bow! |

im thinkin 1600 is excessive. i have top of the line accesories on my vectrix, and my total is right around 1000. including arrows, targets, etc.....yea easily 1600.

I see no harm in buying top of the line equipment, like a drenalin or hoyt vectrix, provided a solid PRO-shop outfitted you and will stand behind their products. What would the newbie be better off with, $800 worth of gear and the guidance of a knowledgable proshop, or save a couple hundred at a big box mart and find that the equipment and sales staff ain't worth a crap?

Depending on your natural ability and with good smart practice, don't just carelessly shoot 50 arrows, really concentrate on each and every shot, you could be ready for season. I would still recommend setting your stands for a close shot, under 20 yards. This is just my opinion and I wish you the best of luck. |
