screw the bottom one in, step on it, the next one, step on it, the next one, step on it, and pray to god you dont fall (or just wear a saftey harness)

RE: Screwin in treesteps???

I usually have one foot on a step, one lege wraped around the tree, one arm around the tree, and the other arm scres in the step. It chews up my arms a bit, but the end result is worth it!

RE: Screwin in treesteps???

I tried that but my arms get tired of holding myself up and screwing them in.

R U using a cordless drill to make pilot holes? It will make the process a lot easier.

You might try to use a wrench to help give you some leverage while screwing them in.

Someone should fabricate a drill bit to screw them in, or the step makers could add a socket head on them?

RE: Screwin in treesteps???

I had the same experience, killadoe. I used them for a bit, but now I use Lone Wolf climbing sticks. Much easier, quieterand not much heavier (4 sticks = 10 lbs to get up 15'-18'), and they can be used in most circumstances where screw in steps can.

Now I use my screw in steps to hold my backpack and water bottle.

safty harness like seat of the pants. You can buckle it in on the sides by your hips. This allows you to lean back with your hands free. Also called a linesman belt I think.

I do it the same way as kill it n grill it, but am also a big fan of using a cordless drill. A belt holster for the drill helps tremendously.

Ameristep sells a steel tool for installing/removing steps. I'd never even attempt screwing in steps without it. With this baby, you can absolutely bury them in there. If you use screw-in steps - you need this thing.

I love that thing when using screw ins. I went ahead and sprung for 2 sets of the strap steps and they work really well, I can be set up almost as fast as my climber.

I HATE those things. I use strap on ladder sticks. Much easier, faster and safer in myopinion.

I simply cannot believe this thread has been up this long and no one has given you the right answer yet!! :)

It's pretty simple: if you're having a hard time screwing in steps... Or you've got a step that needs an "installer" sold along with it, or if you need a drill to drill out a pilot hole... YOU'RE USING THE WRONG SCREW-IN STEPS!!! :DSeriously. Spend an extra buck or two to buy Cranfords. They're usually only found at your more knowledgeable pro shops, but they're easy as pie to screw in. I won't use anything else. They're UNBELIEVABLY so much better than anything else on the market.

I have no sponsorship ties to Cranford at all (I tried; talked to the owner, but no dice... they just don't have the budget for it). I'll still push them this strongly, as the second-place step is so far behind them I have no idea who it is.

I think Bass Pro and Cabela's sells them, too... though I haven't looked in a while. After I bought a few hundred of them, I haven't looked at the step section in quite a while. Just make sure it says Cranford or you've got some way to ascertain it's a Cranford; they're SO good that others have tried to ride their backs with the "easy" name ...

I have never had a problem. I just screw one it, step up, and repeat. I use the cheapest ones I can find too;)

About the worst that has happened is I am drenched in sweat because it gets so damn humid around here.

RE: Screwin in treesteps???

Greg/Mo has it right......Cranford all the way! No need for drills or step installers. Just startem and screw them in. Easier to start, strong, durable and safe. One thing about them is if they get a tad dull after lots of use, the tip ends are easily touched up. Another cool thing is they can be easily unscrewed compared to any other brand I tried in the past, but still easily screw in. Personnally I prefer the rod steps and my local pro shop sells them for $3.50 a piece, a pretty good deal.:) I would not trade 5 of any other brand for 1 of my Cranfords.

depends on which steps your using.. My finace' used the EZ wide screw in steps they were a breeze.. the cheaper steps are a pain in the @ss, per him.

He deserves a break so we went to the sticks this year.

RE: Screwin in treesteps???

wow. I"m surprised ANYONE would even think of putting in the tree steps without wearing a safety harness\lineman's belt.
That's whats called COMMON SENSE to help alleviate a fall out of the tree and possible injury. (as in DUH!)
I don't care how old you are, how strong you are, what kind of job you do, how much money you make-----when you hit the ground or hang up on a tree step the loved ones you leave behind won't care either.
PLEASE, PLEASE......everyone wear a harness and USE the linemans belt to install the steps.......it ain't rocket science people.......and live to hunt another year.
