Does this bother anyone else?
It is getting that time of year when guys break out their bows and start getting in some serious practice for the upcoming archery seasons.
I'm sure that many of us get together with friends to practice. What really bothers me is when you get a couple guys together and they only want to shoot from 20 yds. You have topractically beg to get them to move back to 30 yds.and Heaven forbid they even think about trying a few from 40 or 50yds. I don't know what it is. They always have the same excuses. " I don't shoot at deer more than 20 yds." " I don't know if my 30yd pin is sighted in." " No, I'm alright shooting from here." Any of you guys encounter this? Does it bother you like it does me? |
RE: Does this bother anyone else?
" I don't shoot at deer more than 20 yds."
That's me:D I am in ignore mode at the range, it would really bug me if I watch some of these guys. |
RE: Does this bother anyone else?
It wouldn't bother me at all. If they aren't comfortable shooting past 20 yards then thats ok with me.
|
RE: Does this bother anyone else?
im the one that gets begged to move back but now with my 5-pin i shoot back to 60 anyday
|
RE: Does this bother anyone else?
Hasn't been an issue with the people I shoot with. My buddy shoots about 1/5th as much as I do and is willing to step back to 50 if I want to. By this time people should be shooting enough that 30 yds is their standard practice range and 20 is just for warm-up.
That's why people need to dust their bows off way sooner than now. Even if you shoot teice a month in the off season you're still better off. |
RE: Does this bother anyone else?
It doesn't bother me what other people do. Their choices are their choices. Why would you worry if someone wants to limit themselves to 20 yards and under. Does it really effect your hunting? Does it really change what you do? Let them have their say and tell them about the 40 yard heart shot you made.[8D]

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
I know what your talking about and while I respect my few buddies that don't want to practice past 20 yards, it does get a little annoying when your trying to shoot with them. If we are shooting in my yard its a pain for them to shoot at 20 yards and then for me to have to walk back to 40 or 50 to shoot. Thats why I usually will only shoot one arrow at a time while they shoot 3 and when they are done I do some of my long range shooting.

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
I have no problem with target practicing at 20-30-and up to 40 yards. You never know when it will help you get the Buck or Doe of your dreams out in the woods.I have my pins set at 20,30 and 40 yards.I can always make the choice to shoot or not to shoot at a deer at 40 yards away but it is nice to know you can make that far away of a shot if you feel confident on hitting your target!
|
RE: Does this bother anyone else?
You know, people will have their opinions or preferences and I just leave it at that. Hey, if the next guys is limiting him/herself to those ranges, just means more bucks for you. You don't always have the good luck of one coming in that close.

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
Its never been an issue for me either. The range I go too has targets from 10 to 50 yards. Th ebulk of them is at 20 yards, but that is the most used range during deer season around here.

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
The one that really bothers me is when they brag about grouping in a 3" circle but when you finnaly shoot with them they cant keep them in a paper plate circle at 20, and then the excuses start, go figure!! :D

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
i got a buddy JUST like that.
"i dont shoot deer past my top pin" "i shoot like crap passed 20yards" "i aint goin to the 3d shoot i suck" quit yer cryin and practice!!! you aint gunna get better at 30 and 40 by practicing at 20 all day!! he sent me a pic of a group he shot...been a decint group...looked like my 35yd groups...asked him how far..he said 15yds. i was just like oh....i shot a group at 15yds once...i robinhooded my arrow...that was enough shooting groups! ohhh well hes a hard head and wont listen to a word i have to say...just today i put him in his place...jokingly..but he got the drift. we were talkin to his uncle..my buddy said well i think im going upto the field to shoot. the uncle says oh you going with him? i was like ahh i will go watch..hes like ya go give him some pointers. i was like ohhhhhh no i dont give pointers...im new to bowhunting..i dont know nothing and just like to blow money on expensive stuff...im some kind of idiot...my friend just gave me the stare...lol. he tells me that all the time... to each his own...i want to be the best that i can...but thats just me....when were at a 3d shoot and they are shooting from the 2nd stake i will be shooting better than him from the 3rd stake without a range finder...last year within the first week of shooting for the first time ever in life i was shooting better then him....he just dont practice...when he does its from 20yds. occassionally 30 maybe a few from 40..but you cant get better at 30 and 40 by practicng at 15 and 20! |
RE: Does this bother anyone else?
hehehehe me and my buddy challenge each other with different off the wall shots from as little as 5 yards to 60 yards. We mix it up pretty good. We never shoot the same distance everytime. Why should you. I mean if you have a deer come in and its 33 yards away, you should know that distance. You should know how to shoot the shot. Dont get me wrong I wont shoot at a deer at 60 yards in a hunting situtation, but you can bet I will bust one at 45 yards and not think twice about it...

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
If I was shooting in my backyard with someone, yeah it would bug me because I'd get bored, like someone above said 20 is a warmup. But if I was at the club shooting on the range, I'd just move on over to wherever I felt I needed to shoot at.

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
I preferably just don't like to shoot past 30 yds, because i am not goingto shoot a buck past that. When I first started bowhunting I had a very experienced bowhunter tell me that he never shot past 20 yds, because his chances of recovering the deer dropped past 20yds. He harvested and recovered over 25 deer in a row with this philosophy, so after trial and error on my behalf I started to emulate him.

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
Practicing at longer distances always makes the shorter ones seem like chip shots. I sometimes practice out to 50yds,but I won't shoot a deer at more than 25.

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
I'm a loner Dottie, a rebel.
I shoot alone most all of the time. |
RE: Does this bother anyone else?
I shoot alone 98% of the time. I have the "yard" to do it. I can shoot anywhere from 3 yds to 100+ if I want to but 70 has been my max. Anyway, occasionally my neighbor, the young man that lives with his folks nearby, will come over. He likes to shoot close in, 15-20yds,but will go out to 50 yds if I ask him too. We don't shoot distance much when he is over though so I came up with a different way to shoot close in. I can print targets with some software I have and I print 4 circled X's on one sheet of paper. We put two of those targets on each bag target (8circled X'sper bag). Then we see who can empty their quiver the fastest and score the best hits. It's fun and helps you acquire and shoot targets in a short amount of time which I think could help when you have a limited window to shoot your animal. You may want to give that a try with your friends.

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
If I had friends, we would shoot from all over. lol. :D
I understand what you are saying. I have not had that problem. We climb my trees, stand on the house. Pick random spots from ranges of 5 yards to 65 yards and practice. My wife says it looks like a bunch of kids out playing cow boys and indians. |
RE: Does this bother anyone else?
Mostly its just me and the wife unless the Kids come in from out of town and bring their gear. We have a 60 yard range in the yard and do most shooting at 35 because thats where the shade is, and dont tear up near as many Arrows from there!

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
I usually start at 10 yards, then move to 20, then sometimes to 25 or 30, but not very often from more than 20. I'm OK for hunting at 20 to 25, but I won't shoot at a deer that's further than that. A big part of the problem is where I live (DC), so it's really hard for me to practice very often. It's 45 minutes each way (hour-and-a-half round trip) to the nearest place I can shoot, without traffic (and believe me, there's usually plenty of traffic around DC), so it's just not someting I can do nearly as often as I would like.

RE: Does this bother anyone else?
I shoot out to 60 and 70 yards myself and I understand what you are saying.
Problem is that most of these people that claim that they don't shoot at a deer past 20 yards will fling an arrow at a deer if he gets hung up at 35 or 40 yards and then complain about wounding it and never finding it. Unfortunately I get to hear about this kind of crap all season long. Have them bring their own targets when you all practice together. Shoot from the same line but set your targets up at different distances. That way you can shoot at 50 yards while they shoot at their short 20 yards. |

completely agree |
RE: Does this bother anyone else?
I'm talking about when you all get together for some practice. You are all standing there shooting together and you would like to move back and shoot a few from a longer distance and your buddies refuse. I don't care what they do elsewhere. I'd just like to shoot from varying distances when shooting together. |
