Dang Dogs
Alright guys and gals,
I had this problem last year--- stray dogs. i hate them. i know they will be around this year as well because i have already seen them. last year they were walking under my stand, peeing on my truck tires(i only park 400 yards from my stand), and chasing my deer!!![:@]now my question is...you guessed in...how do i get rid of them? i dont know if i have the heart to shoot them. they are strays and not anyones pets. i have seen 6 in the group but the dairyman next to me said he shot one last week. do i need to man up and shoot them? or should i let them be? |
RE: Dang Dogs
put some poisoned food out for them. you may get a few other animals to.
|
RE: Dang Dogs
If they are definitely strays I see3 choices: Ignore them or catch them and turn them in to the local shelter and let them deal with them or..........

RE: Dang Dogs
i live in the sticks, we dont have a shelter. :D

RE: Dang Dogs
ORIGINAL: ron3775 but what about having someone else come in and take care of the problem for you? |
RE: Dang Dogs
The idea for someone else could work nicely, i have a friend who is might be willing to do it for some beer;)
|
RE: Dang Dogs
LOL if I lived there by you, I'd come over with my .06 and take care of it for a case of beer.
|
RE: Dang Dogs
You shoot deer that are not affecting you in anyway but you can't shoot a wild dog, now come on.
|
RE: Dang Dogs
Wild dogs are more dangerous than bear or even wolves, especially if they are traveling in packs. They can do as much damage as any other large preditor with the addition of not being afraid of people, and that they will kill for fun(not just food). If it were me, especially if there are kids that might be in the area, I'ld feel it was my duty to shoot them. Just use a scope and check for collars first and make sure the farmer doesn't have any dogs that don't have collars.
Oh yeah, don't talk about it too much afterwords either..... |
RE: Dang Dogs
Take em out. When I was 13, I had a stray dog false charge me, snarl, show his teeth, and try to bite me while I was walking to me stand. He did this for about 1/2 mile, when I decided enough was enough. I dispatched the mutt and left him there. I felt terrible afterwards... but looking back on it, I believe it was necessary.

RE: Dang Dogs
We had six wild dogs run up on us at deer camp a few yrs.ago. I was aways from a gun, so I had to jump up in the back of the truck, they were getting pretty nasty, My buddie pulled a John Wayne and put them all down, it's what needed to be done. I would do the same, you never know whats going to happen, let alone your trying to hunt!

RE: Dang Dogs
ORIGINAL: bigjim12 thery arnt chasing cows, killing chickens, orhurting kidsor anything. i the only thing they ae doing is chasing my deer every once in a while. A wild dog, one that has been on its own for a while, will more than likely be pretty nasty. The longer they have been on their own the nastier they can get. So even as a dog lover, no collar, running deer, dead dog. |
RE: Dang Dogs
running deer now how long will it be until they start running cows or chicken or the kids? Just something to think about long term not just the present but what to avoid in the future.
|
RE: Dang Dogs
If this dog has been ruining your hunt for awhile now, I believe it might be time to "put it down."
|
RE: Dang Dogs
none of them have a collars, i have talked to the neighbors and they arnt their dogs, and i have only whitnessed them running deer a few times this past year. they are still there so i have a plan.....
1. take out the corn in my feeder 2. replace it with kibbles and bits 3. get out the AR-15 4. post up in the pasture with some red-neck friends 5. finish the job :D sound good to you guys? |
RE: Dang Dogs
haha! sounds like a plan! :D
|
RE: Dang Dogs
man that is a hard thing to do, in MN we can shoot a dog that is chasing deer. I never see dogs when in stand.
|
RE: Dang Dogs
Depending on were you live you might not want to make a party of it, unless your buddies know how to keep their mouths shut. In some places like here in Wisconsin, only the dnr can put down dogs that are chaising deer. I think the plan sounds good, but I'ld keep it to one tight lipped friend.
|
RE: Dang Dogs
Here in missouri it is not legal to shoot dogs. TheDNR even put notification in their fliers this year. But they don't have to deal withthe problem of over population of stray dogs that people have set loose in the country. Here in missouri, the DNR either needs to change the law to allow landowners to do it or do something about it themselves or shut up. I would drop them! Good practice before the season starts.

RE: Dang Dogs
There were some stray dogs running around by me last year....and i had a slow cousin who lived near the area they lived so we had to do something. We tried hunting them but they were dang smart, the local dog warden ended up trapping them all.
|
RE: Dang Dogs
if they are chasin deer and runnin all over the place they could end up runnin into somebodys backyard where there are kids playin or somethin like that. blast em if you get a chance.
|
RE: Dang Dogs
If your worried about getting in trouble I would live-trap the dogs and haul them to the dog pound and let them deal with them...other wise don't say anything and hope one of them runs in front of your gun while your squirrel hunting....! ;)

RE: Dang Dogs
Where I used to live they had a pack of wild dogs runnin around killing sheep and calfs. They finally got a group together and put them down but not before they attacked a little kid and almost killed him. Once they lose their fear of man, anything is possible, and dogs that have gone wild have very little fear of man. I had to put down a big white pit bull once, same area but he kept coming and growling. I was squirrel hunting w a buddy, he heard me shoot and walked over my way. I told him I shot a 70# white one, we laughed about itwhen he saw it. Do yourself a favor and find outfor sure if they are wild, then exterminate w extreme prejudice. They are hurting your deer hunting anyhow.

This is a public forum , Have you ever heard the saying " know you Friends and know your enemies better". This is not something that makes anyone look good ,so maybe instead of putting it out there for the world to see you just might want to talk about it in private. This is a lose ,lose for hunting in general.[:@] |
RE: Dang Dogs
would you shoot a coyote if given the opportunity? If you said yes than shoot the dogs. there aint much diff between the two now.
|
RE: Dang Dogs
If i had dogs chasing my deer i would look for collar, if i had a dog chasing me with the intent to harm me i dont care if it had a collar dragging a leash behind it if i could kill it i would.
