How many a day?

How many shots a day can you take before getting sore and struggling to draw back. I am 24, not freaking 70 and I am just feeling weak. I used to bench over 200 pounds, but I am getting sore after drawing back 10 times and that is only 55 pounds.[:'(]

I am just getting started so maybe I need to take a couple of days off to let the soreness wear off? I had been shooting 70 pounds all week so maybe that is what caused it. Any suggestions??

definently take er easy for a while. when drawing a bow, you use alot of muscles that arent used for much else in everyday life. when you feel yourself getting tired hang the bow up. shooting tired leads to bad form and bad habits that are tough to break. if your overly tired to start, lower draw weight and take a break for a couple days till your rested up. no problem with working upto your desired weight...just dont push yourself too hard...injuries can ruin whole seasons and come quick if you arent careful...

I would have to say around 60 arrows. I have been shooting a lot since April.

What mauser said,

If you are just getting back into it ease into it. I was really sore for a good while when I started
earlier this year and have gone from 55# to 61#, and its easier than when I started.

Now I can shoot about 30+ times without any real fatigue. Just regular shooting should get you there.

Thanks guys I am going to take your advice and take a couple days off. I think I just strained some things I hadn't used in a while. Hopefully within a couple of weeks I will be up to 30 arrows before tiring.

depending on the day heres what i shoot... but shoot only with what you feel comfortable.

20or so arrows at 20
12 or so arrows at 30
12 or so arrows at 40
6 or so arrows at 50

It's amazing how much a few pounds can make. I struggle with 70 lbs. I can only pull it about 4 or 5 times, and never pull it smoothly. I can pull 65 lbs smoothly about 6 or 8 times and then I start getting shakey. I can pull 62lbs almost all day long. I don't understand how just a few pounds makes such a difference, but it does.

RE: How many a day?

Also, don't go necessarily by how much you can bench... while the ol' "how much can you bench?" has always been the layman's standard for strength, it doesn't necessarily translate itself into ease of drawing a bow. I've always considered myself reasonably strong, as I've been involved in some sort of athletics my whole life through high school, college and afterwards and have spent more than my share of time in the gym myself...

But, I was shooting in the back yard a couple years ago when a friend stopped by who was a frequent lifting partner. Now, I was and am nowhere in this guy's league, but he pushed me hard and was a great partner. He was a starting Division-I outside linebacker, and could probably throw up close to 400 in his heyday. He just took the title of Missouri Show-Me Naturals last month in his very first bodybuilding contest... The point of all that? He struggled mightily to pull my bow back -- and it was set at 65. He watched in amazement as I sat cross-legged on the ground, held my bow arm level, and effortlessly drew the back slowly and under control.

Practice, practice, repetition, repetition... you get the idea. Being muscle-bound isn't necessarily what's going to help. I know you may not have been implying that, but the point is that it's just going to take shooting -- a lot. :)

start doing some pushups to get your trisepts working

I shoot in reps! I usually shoot groups of 3, 7 or 8 times per session! Most days I do it 3 times, so about 60 a day, but if I start to feel it too much I'll take a day off!

Yea bench doesnt have a WHOLE lot to do with it,, im 155 pounds, and use to push 245 on the bench.. not braggin but i think thats pretty good at 16 years old and 155 pounds.. i let a friend shoot my bow, hes about 200 pounds and Pushed 295...and hehad a really hard time with drawing it at 60 pounds.. when i first got mine 60 pounds was a lil heavy so i turned it down about 2 - 3 pounds, was a lil hard but not as bad.. shot that for 2 - 3 weeks then turned it back up to 60... pulling it with ease and feel like i could pull 65 with ease...Dont get too caught up in the weight tho, turn it to whereu feel comfortable and have at it, shoot a little everyday, sooner than u think u can turn it right back 70..

RE: How many a day?

I get tired at around 40 arrows. Start working your triceps, back, and rear deltoids. Your rear delts are probably the weakest link. BTW, I have worked out for 7 yrs, and get tired at 40 arrows @65 lbs. I weigh 240 @ 13% bodyfat, and I have a couple friends who weigh 40 lbs less who pull more weight and can shoot more arrows regularly. So don't base you reasoning on larger muscles or bench strength.

I can shoot about 60 before I start to really feel it at 65#. The first time I did it I was sore for a few days. You will get used to it after awhile. Just don't over do it right from the start.

RE: How many a day?

Prior to being laid up 2 rounds of 60 weren't out of the question and usually throw in some extras for fine tuning.

I'd say 135 arrows..without being noticably tired.

Bench would have little to do with shhoting a bow, it would be more lats and delts.

RE: How many a day?

As many as you can untill you start feeling muscle fatigue. At that point stop because it can be counter productive. Easy to develop bad habbits and lose focus when you get fatigued. The number of arrows could vary from day to day actually depending on what you do and how tired your body is to begin with.

You say "you're just getting started so I'd drop the lbs a bit and work up to that if that's what you want to eventually pull. Get the correct muscles built up (bicep, shoulders, lats and back) and you'll be good to go. I don't really recognize the fatigue setting in with my muscles tightening up but more with my shooting performance. I can tell I've had enough when the groups start to go Ka-bluey. Good luck

RE: How many a day?

Its the first one that counts....I used to shoot a bunch, now I go out and shoot about a dozen, it helps to concentrate on form not how many you can shoot...

Remember when you lifted weights to gain strength?? You didn't work the same muscles every day, I did the same groups of muscles every 3rd day...

RE: How many a day?

Good point, nc... Believe it or not, as I approach my elk trip, I'm shooting LESS than I was all summer. I've went from shooting hundreds and hundreds of arrows a week to now just walking out with a handful of arrows and taking several minutes between each. My form is ingrained after so much shooting this year, so what I'm doing these last couple days is just concentrating on shooting one arrow at a time.

Last night, I only took one broadhead-tipped arrow outside with me. I was shooting from 50, so I'd have to shoot, walk all the way to the target, walk all the way back, and shoot again. To me, this does a couple things: (Besides walking 100 yards at a time with each shot and getting that much more excersice... ;)) It forces me to slow down and concentrate on each shot, and 2) or more importantly -- I don't want to have to walk 100 yards for a crappily released arrow so I really make sure my sight picture is perfect before firing the arrow.

I believe it was either Randy Ulmer or Bill Winke who wrote a column a few years ago about keeping just one arrow propped up beside their back door. Once a day, they would grab it and step out onto the back porch and shoot at the target in the back yard.

Good advice Greg. 19 more days buddy!

For me, muscle memory is so critical. I stop shooting when I feel the slightest fatigue. For me, it's a game of quality not quantity.

I bench 365 at age 37and can shoot (at 70 lbs) about 65 to70 shots an afternoon. However, I am more accureate under 55 shots. You can buy a workout starpthat will build up you musclesso you can shoot more and more accurately.

GTOHunter 08-06-2007 08:52 PM

RE: How many a day?

Your better off shooting accurately pulling at say 55 to 60 lbs than wearing out and shooting poorly at 70 lbs.If your physically able to work your way up and keep shooting at 70 lbs then thats fine too.Like most mentioned here you can do certain exercises to build yourself up to reach your goal of 70 lbs and stay there while shooting good groups.

Another thing to consider is what is the amount of "Let-off" on your Bow when your pulling it back? Some Bows have better let-off than others and help indrawing with more tension.

I generally shoot about 50-75 arrows a day at 60 lbs never get sore and have shot as many as 200 in a day.I have just never had any trouble w/ pain and thats even after breaking collarbone shoulderbladeand acronym from a treestand fall in 2005.I had an awesome surgeon and truly owe him big I can't imagine not being able to bowhunt
