Truly Primitive - The Atlatl

I must live a sheltered life here in the Bayou State. I was joking to a traditional archer who
builds his own bows, that all that is left for him is spear hunting. Well, he told me they already
have that in the Atlatl.

He explained it - a spear with a sling attachment for leverage, and told me there are already tournaments
and people who are very profficient at it.

He also told me that many states are considering "primitive weapon" seasons before bow season for the Atlatl.

Anyway, I've probably been living under a rock, but thought I would see what you guys had to say.

I know several states recognise them. They are quite powerful, but somewhat less accurate in most hands that the typical traditional rig. also difficult to hide the movement of the spear throwing motion....but talk abouta challenge. it would be something to try sometime.

My google search showed that it was legalized in Alabama (home of poor old Fred [&:]).

I also some concern about wounding animals. But isn't that a gripe made
about archery by the anti's?

Anyway, thinking about it, the atlatl would obviously be a lot slower than an arrow,
but would probably have a whole lot more kinetic energy. Totally different concept.

LeBeauHunter, you really have been hiding under a rock. I've made several of 'em to horse around with at the range. We've got several stands of bamboo out there and that stuff makes excellent darts with tips whittled out of hardwood. I generally toss 'em into the fire pit when I'm done playing with them. No way am I good enough to ever hunt with one, but they definitely ARE fun.

We had Atlatl Bob down at Poverty Point (West Carroll Parish) for Archaeology Week back in the 90's. He brought some of his new (then) hyper-engineered atlatls and darts. I still have the launcher, but no darts. Those things are fun, but would be really hard to hunt whitetail with. Hogs maybe.
