When vacations strike back. . .

“No bow for you” is really all I heard at the doctor’s office tonight, as I left, still struggling with pain in my left bicep and triceps.

What happened I really don’t know? All I do know is the pain is overwhelming at times and I would prefer my arm to be severed off at the current moment. I might even donate the use of my inflamed arm to those Techie nuts on the Technical Forums. I am sure they would love to do some ballistic testing or test broadhead penetration. How good are those Rage broadheads anyways?

In the end, it sounds like I have some sort of muscle strain, torn tendon, something of that nature. No more softball this summer, as well as shooting my bow for about 4-6 weeks.

I recall a thread by Ducsauce not too long ago, referring to how we endanger our chances at hunting with other hobbies and everyday activities. I never would believe I could injure myself on vacation, but somehow, I managed.

I don’t know if it was the trip through the 3-D course this past Saturday (went shooting with JFergus7 near Lake Geneva, WI) or that nasty bucket of range balls on the driving range at my resort. Either way, I believe “no bow for you” stings worse than the arm . . . for the time being anyways.

ugh! hang in there and heal up quick. for your own sake, listen to the doc...easier said than done...but ive done my fair share of not listening to the doctor.

like the time i broke both wrists at once. he gave me removable air casts so i could atleast goto the bathroom and bath myself...if not i would been about useless. he told me only take them off when absolutely needed blah blah etc...yaaaa your gunna give a teenager 2 removable casts?? we all know broken bones dont hurt much after a week...atleast i didnt think so...now i can move my wrists a couple degrees in any direction...passed that is a no go. sometimes i get a decint bit of pain...all my fault im sure..oh well...i caught a bunch of fish i remember..those couple weeks with and without that casts on..most times without lol.

or the time i had Mono, a bit over a week before rifle season. i had a severe case...so bad they wanted to keep me and put in airways because my throat was honestly about swelled shut. if i got up to goto the bathroom i was sleeping the second i made it back to bed. TERRIBLE. oh ya...not to mention the whole swollen spleen thing and it could rupture. HA!! the sunday before the season i went and sighted in my deer rifle. i was pretty much "better"...still got exhausted from little work, and wasnt "well"...but i was better lol. i specifically asked the Dr if shooting my rifle was bad...he said nahh shouldnt be. i still think hes wrong but hey..hes a Dr. that Monday, season opened. i was in the woods bright and early!! by the time i got to my stand i was exhausted. i dont know if i even watched the sun rise..11am my buddies came through driving and picked me up...i got to sit on the rest of the drives and didnt walk 50yds from the trucks. they kept an eye on me. i really dont think i shoulda been out there....

man i could go on for days about not listening to the drs....but in your case...id listen...with bow season fast approaching and all.

Bols ... I'm really sorry to hear about your arm , maybe you should have let your wife take the hundred dollar bill instead of playing tug of war with her. :D
I really hope you heel up in time for hunting season but in the mean time , take it easy and don't overdo it you don't want to risk reinjury.
Let me know if you want me to come down there and shoot one for ya , I'll be more than happy to do so. :)

Get an Excuse from your Doctor to use a Cross Bow for the next 6 months until you heal up....don't miss Hunting because of a little temporary set back. :( You can use a Cross Bow in Illinois right?

I had shoulder surgery about 3 years ago and luckily I was healed up before Bow Season started!

That stinks! Take your time and don’t rush yourself. I had a similar problem a couple of years ago – my back popped when I went to draw back my bow. It took me a couple of months off and doing daily Dr. recommended exercises (luckily it was the off-season) before I could shoot again. I went from pulling around 70lbs down to about 57lbs, which is where I’m still at….

I was able to lobby the wife for a new bow – the only good thing to come of it…

If I had a spare crossbow laying around, I wouldn't hesistate trying to get a disabled hunter crossbow permit. We definitely have those here in IL. But since I don't, I really hope this arm will heal sooner than later.

If it comes down to it. . .I may just switch sides like mobo suggested. . .anyone got a lefty bow I can borrow? *cough*Germ*cough* ;)

Other than the fact that I did actually shootthree shotsin my basement before I left for the doctor, I don't think I am going to mess around anymore. I will just let time do its' work. Though I am prone to push the limits likeMauser, I don't want to miss the entire season because of stupidity.

Keep me honest guys. . .don't let me pull my bow back before I am healed up completely this time.:)

Damn it boy... that's rough. Well do what you need to get it better, in the event that we're selected as teammates... I don't wanna gimp :D. Seriously though buddy, get 'er fixed up.

Sorry to hear the news Dave. Like everyone else has said; listen to the Doctor!!! Give it a good month or so and see what happens. You need to be in tip-top shape when little Bols #2 comes along. From what I hear you won't be using that bow this fall anyway.;):D

Take care

Sounds fishy to me!

First I beat him at the 3D shoot on Saturday. Then I get a phone call 20 minutes later telling me he didn't add up his score correctly and he actually beat me! Now he has set himself up for 6 weeks of practice and I have to wait for my rematch!

Now I not only want to see that score card but your doctors note!!!!

Bols 07-24-2007 09:32 AM

RE: When vacations strike back. . .

Fergus. . .I wish I was lying man. . .well, not about beating you, because well, I did. I'll fax that scorecard to ya. . .what is your fax #. ;):D[8D] But the arm thing really sucks. . .I don't think I will be picking up a bow for a while.

I came down with some poison ivy as well. How about you? You were crawling through that stuff with shorts on. . .I got a little on my arms.

Yeah, I really don't want to be a gimp on anyone's team. . .I guess I better start figuring out the tuning end of things while I am disabled so I can hit the ground running when this thing heals back up.

First off, when you have your rematch I want my invite! Where did you guys go, Bigfoot? I love that course.

Secondly, if Balls needs some help hunting his properties this fall I'm sure JFerg and myself would be willing to volunteer. You don't need a good arm to run the video camera for me. :D

Justin, actually we went to Midwest Cimmarronin Richmond, IL. It was a pretty cool course. . .my first experience on a 3-D course. It was a blast and I was planning on shooting 3-D a few more times before hunting season, doesn't look like that will be happening.

And if it comes down to not being in the woods or running the camera, well, I guess I will sacrifice and climb in stand and run the camera for you. You won't want to hunt down here though. . .not many deer running around in Grundy county. I promise. ;)[8D]

Bols my buddy[8D], Hate hearing of your bad luck. The guys are right , your young, you will heal fast letting it rest. I had a nasty rotator cuff tear back in 2005 and thought i would never shoot my bow again after having surgery on it. Its better that ever, like nothing ever happened. Find out whats wrong, fix it, and let it heal and you will be shooting in no time. How did you and Jfergus shoot?? Did he corrupt you in any way??:Dfunnin with ya Ferg.:DYou did not blow up anything did you ??

RE: When vacations strike back. . .

Dan,

Thanks for the kind words. . .I am already feeling better, but I know with tendons, strains, tears, etc, you might feel better but it doesn't mean the problem is completely fixed. I am going to take it easy for a few weeks then see where I am at sometime in late August. Should still give me plenty of time to get the broadheads dialed in (I had already started before this little incident)and everything set-up for hunting.

As far as the 3-D shooting went, it was a blast, but nothing exploded!! ;) Sorry for the lame pun. Lets just say, everything I shot would have been dead, but I wasn't slamming the money ring (10ring)everytime. It was my first time on a 3-D course, no excuses, but it sure got me hooked on 3-D shooting.

Fergus was great to hang out with again. I think we will probably hit up a few more shoots before season hits. Then we will most definitely try to hook up for a public land hunt. . .
