Would you lower your buck standard?

Would you lower your "standard" or "minimum" requirement for bucks......if you had a shot at a velvet buck?

Not "any" velvet buck.....but I think I would lower my standard a bit to get a "nice" buck in velvet. ("Nice" is relative to region)

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

Not too sure, i am not a big fan of bucks in velvet, but i would like to shoot one to be able to say i did it. I wouldnt drop my standards too much though, it would still have to be a nice deer to draw back on.

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

No I wouldn't, they generally look much bigger when in velvet anyway. I have no desire to shoot one in Velvet. [:'(]

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

No ... I'll stand by my eight point or better rule , let the little one's go so they can grow besides it wouldbe rare to see a buck still in velvet by October in Michigan.

Hey GR8:

(nice to have you back, BTW);)

They look EXACTLY like they're gonna taxi....in velvet!:)

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

Yes. I also "lowered my standards" last year to shoot my first droptine. I really want one in velvet.

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

If I were to get a shot at a halfway decent buck in velvet I would do it. I have been trying for the last few years. I would see bucks in velvet the weekend before season and then they would be all rubbed off by the time season came around. I would only do it once though

Yeah we all probably have characteristics that turn us on (so to speak) I'd bust a drop-tine myself!

PS.. Jeffgood to be back..Another 6 weeks or so and I'll really be on the road to being back!

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

I wouldn't lower my standards. Velvet bucks don't do anything for me. Give me a drop tine then I might.

Come on Jeff, can't we debate that again?[8D]

To answer your question, no. There is too much time in the season to fill my tag early on a buck that I had to lower my standards for. Plus, I'm a big fan of hard horned bucks, velvet doesn't do it for me.

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

No, I can't. If I lowered my standards it wouldn't be a legal buck.....

I don't care for Velvet racks! If the animal was a monster I would make an exception but assuming they were close to shedding their velvet I would strip it off.

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

Yea being the factI have a chance at three bucks after i shot that one. IT would at least have to be a 6 point though, i did let a spike in velvet go last year and its beutiful to see up close.

Nope not for one in velvet but that is me, Now the droptine Yeh I think I would for a droptine.. Walt

Its kind of like being a single guy out at the bar/club...as the night (season)goes by and closing (end)time nears you become a little less picky in what your willing to take home.;):D

Since I'm just a plain old hunter and not a chest thumping trophy hunter, I have no set standard to lower. I can go out and enjoy hunting without all the pressure and take whichever animal I like, velvet or no.:)

rybohunter 07-20-2007 12:24 PM

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

NO, I did that before for a drop tine and wish I hadn't.

Are you the same kind of hunter with "no set standard to lower" when chasing skirt? ;):D

Arthur P 07-20-2007 12:46 PM

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

Don't have a standard for that either, Red Lion. Done caught my skirt. Been with the same gal 30 years now and settling in for what I hope is at least another 30.

Good for you! :D I caught my skirt 8 years ago, and with God's grace I will get to 30 years like you have! :D

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

proabably not, I just dont think i would be happy with a smaller buck, velvet just never did much for me vs. hard antler.

Rob/PA Bowyer 07-20-2007 01:57 PM

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

Yes I would, here in PA we would never get a chance at a velvet buck unless there was damage or other that caused the velvet to stay put. I'd love a velvet buck but like GMMAT said, it'd have to be the right one.

GMMAT 07-20-2007 02:01 PM

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

Then you "Might" get a chance at that, here, Rob;).

I saw them in velvet right up until the last week in August here, last year. My first buck, last year, still had "some" velvet on his antlers on 9/30.

Rob/PA Bowyer 07-20-2007 02:05 PM

I was kinda thinking and hoping that.;)

Then.....since you're likely to NOT be on my team, this year.....

I hope you get one!;)

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

Might trade some L for W or L for M, maybe someW for M or any other combination of the 3 you can think of as long as it looks like the buck belongs on the front of a Post Card. I would not drop my standard and swap any of the 3 to shoot a buck in Velvet.

arch 07-20-2007 07:30 PM

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

the enjoyment i get from hunting is in the pursuit. i wouldn't "lower my standards" just to harvest an animal because i think it will be my only chance. if it isn't something you are 100% sure of you may be disappointed.

treboryerf 07-20-2007 07:43 PM

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

I don't really have a shoot or no shoot deer.Depends on how my season is going.I get six deer tags 3 each doe and buck.So if i'm seeng deer on a pretty cosistant basis then it does'nt bother me at all to let deer walk and ido it every year.On the other hand you just don't know I may shoot the first deer I see.I rarely fill all six tags, but most of the time it is by choice not to.

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

I'm only impressed with a velvet rack if it's atleast decent sized, 140+ class. I wouldn't be interested in anything less than that. That being said, I would like to add one to the trophy collection someday!

GTOHunter 07-20-2007 09:16 PM

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

I would lower my standards a little for a Velvet Buck.....last year I sat in my ladder stand in Julywhile doing someearly scouting and watching toseewhat deers were using the food plots in the late evenings and out walks a Doe past my stand and she passes right in front of me on a grassy road edge to the woods on the opposite side of the Ridge Field,I look to my right and a 7-Point Buck with a split brow tine walks out and follows the Doe,then a 8-Point Buck comes out,a nice uniform 6-Point Buck and a young 4-Point Buck comes out into the field and they cut over to the food plot about 65 yards in front of my stand and start feeding.....ALL in beautiful velvet, which made them look twice as BIG as they normally look with the regular hard antlers! Then here comes the split brow-tine 7-Pointer back from the other side of the field and walks right past my ladder stand again and cuts out to join the other 3 Bucks that are walking further out to the other 3 food plots stationed through out the field and the Doecomes back and follows the Buck across the field as they slowly browsedaway from me.......! I'm asking myself"Why can't this be the first day of Bow Season"? :([:@]

I will never be able to get a Buck in velvet because all of them will have lost their velvet by the time Bow Season is open (Sept 15)! :(

Kelly/KY 07-20-2007 09:44 PM

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

I'm not a big velvet fan, although the first two weeks of the season here in KY give a guy a good chance. I wouldn't lower my standards on a buck there's just too many does to do that and they taste just as good.

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

Lower your standards raise your average right? :D

I'd kill a velvet buck in a second if hes the buck I am hunting or if I get surprised by some big velvet buck on opening week. Lower standardsto kill one in the velvet, nope. I get about 3-4 days of the season to get a shot at velvet bucks. But for the most part the older bucks are already shed here before August 30th.

IL-Cornfed 07-21-2007 06:47 AM

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

I'm honestly, VERY surpised that more folks here don't like velvet racks! Man, I've always wanted a beautiful whitetail in full velvet and have dreamed of taking trophy Muley's and 'Bou for the exact same reason!

Now, where am I going to have to go to collect a magnum specimen,..... SSK, MT, ID, KY??? It certainly will never be possible here with an Oct. 1 opener. [&o]

RE: Would you lower your buck standard?

Wouldnt lower my standards that much I would shoot up to a small 6 if it were in velvet but otherwise this year its big six or better but I got my eye on the high tined 8 last year that came in at 20 yards but just a little to dark for a ethical shot so he walked hopefully this year hes a10.
