Setting pins Low?
 

This is mostly for guys who use a single pin sight, but everyone else's exp. is welcome.

A few guys at the achery shop I deal with were telling me that they all set the pins on their hunting bows a little low. They explained to me that they do this for when the deer hears the bow and "ducks", it should be right on target.

Do any of you guys do this?

It's called jumping the string and no I don't set pins low to compensate for it. Just before a deer hauls butt he'll crouch to get set to run-this is commonly referred to as jumping the string. What I do is watch the deer's body language. You'll be able to tell if the deer is nervous or alerted or if he is relaxed. Sometimes you have to wait or pass up a shot if the animal is in "high alert". If the deer is relaxed,he won't react quick enough to jump the string.

If you set your pins low, and the deer ducks, then you'd shoot over the deer.

I know of one hunter who told me he sets his pins low, just because he has been shooting rifles and handguns for so long, he has to put the pin right under what he wants to hit. Old habits die hard, but he kills plenty of deer.

I zero my pin and then aim low. If you drop your pin (set it low) youd be shooting over the deer when the deer would jump the string. Youre better off to aim a little low. I always aim just behind the front leg right about the pit where the leg meets the body. If you want to set your site low, you need to raise your pin not drop it. Just my 2 cents.

Deer don't always react to the shot, so it doesn't make a bit of sense to set your pin to be aiming low. Set your pin for where you want the arrow to hit and always aim for the heart. Then if the deer doesn't drop, you'll center punch the heart. If it does drop, you'll get lungs.

And if you happen to miss low, the deer will most likely live.
