Bow Slap

Hey guys. I've recently changed releases, arrows nocks, a tubeless peep, and a cable slide silencer. Now however, the string slaps my arm almost ever shot, regardless of the way i bend my arm, or shorten or lengthen the release. Has anyone out there had this problem and they were able to fix it? Any suggestions? Thanks everyone

Sounds like you are overbowed to me, or the new gadgets could have caused a change in form.

Shorten your drawlenth or either loose some gadgets or get used used to shooting with them.

I had gotten into some kind of funky mojo myself for awhile and was slapping my arm also. I got some great pointers on here, most thought my draw was to long but in the end it was me holding the grip with most of my palm and not just the part behind my thumb. I have not touched my arm since and im shooting better also. Thanks to the guys on here, they are the best :)

Make sure you still anchor in the same spot you did before you changed releases.then make sure your draw lenght is not too long,if you have a slight bend in your arm and you at on the back wall of your draw your dl should not be too long, but watch the way u are gripping the bow try using a low wrist grip with your hand relaxed.

I know you guys are telling me the right thing with the drawlength?overdraw, but i already checked this and my drawlength hasn't changed other than the small change in releases, and i've already set them to the samelength. I'm looking for odd answers, such as form or weird solutions. Thanks for all the help fellas.

I think you're on to something treboryerf,a change in my form. But what do you mean by a low wrist grip?

RE: Bow Slap

The odd part about this bow slap is that it is slapping down near the wrist, as opposed to the inner meaty part of the forearm

treboryerf 07-06-2007 08:19 PM

RE: Bow Slap

let the bow grip run along the meaty part of thumbwith ur wrist slightly bent up.hard to describe in words.you are probably gripping the bow with your wrist srtaight out like your shaking hands or pointing with index finger this is a high wrist grip.Sometimes this can cause the string to slap your arm.happens to me if I go awhile without shooting my bow.Thats why I never move my sights after a lengthy layoff from shooting I wait until my form returns. You will get yours back too just relax.

I would just check the way your holding the bow, make sure your elbows bent

Try this little experiment;

Hold your bow arm out as if you are holding an imaginary bow. Chances are that your knuckles are in the verticle position( up and down)

Now turn you bow arm with the imaginary bow so that your knuckles are horizontal ( going across).

Notice what happens to you forearm and wrist.

You should be holding you bow with your knuckles almost horizontal. Only the heel of you thumb should be touching the grip NOT YOUR PALM!

This is the only part of your hand that should touch the grip.

your grip when shooting should look similar to this

Try this out and see if it helps

Your bow wouldn't happen to be a PSE Baby-G would it?

I had one and always had a problem with it slapping my wrist (Not my forearm)

From time to time it would bite me. Ended up selling it.

No, its a cabelas/fred bear bow and only recently (since I made the changes) have i had problems with it

Go back to the old release and see if you still have the problem... if not you know what is causing it.

One of the best things about an STS type string suppressor is that it eliminates wrist slap. I have an extra one, PM or email me if you want to try it.

I would suggest getting a css from meanv.

A friend of mine was having the same problem and one of those made it disappear

It stops the string from traveling too far forward

I would suggest fixing the problem, not getting a band aid for it. There is no reason you should have arm slap on a modern compound bow, hence there is no reason you should spend money on a device to keep it from happening. I bet the guy selling them would tell you the same thing.

Fix the problem at hand, then get a shock absorbing device if you want or need one. But don't get one for the wrong reasons.

You either changed your grip, your form or stance is wrong, or your draw length is too long. No way of knowing without seeing you draw and shoot the bow. Go to a decent bow shop and let them watch you shoot.

Your first mistake may have been getting a bow from a large retail store like cabela's. Not that I haven't seen bad set ups come out of some shops as well. Really depends on the knowledge of the person helping you.

I don't think this is something we can solve for you here. We might get lucky and something you try will work, but I think you would be better served having someone watch you shoot. Might be something you can get fixed in a half an hour or so vrs dinking around for weeks and being frustrated.

Paul
