RE: One of the best threads ever
You know, Gary.....after reading that....I feel a little selfish. I'm only looking for two deer, this year (other than the throng of does...lol). "The Bull"....and any otherbuck I deem "appropriate". It took these guys a long time to get to where they are. It might take me a while to get to where I could let a 110" deer pass. (and size is relative, guys)
If I shoot a buck this year, though.....its going on the wall. I don't understand why I'd shoot one if I didn't intend to have it mounted. I might shoot a couple of bucks a year.....or I might not shoot one for a couple of years. I don't know. THAT article is inspiring......but they did a LOT of "killing" before they got to the point they're at. |

That was a great story, I really enjoyed it.

yea that sums up PA too(minus the baiting part). I wish there was a fast forward button to press regarding hunter attitudes.

RE: One of the best threads ever
Great article. I get jealous when reading such great success stories and would LOVE the chance to manage deer like that where I hunt. I have let deer walk and have seen some 150 class deer on the property. The problem we have is that there are a lot of small parcels of land all joined together that get hunted heavily and the surrounding areas would never go along with it. As soon as I let a deer walk it would just head to the feeding area on the neighboring land and get taken by the next guy. This doesn't mean I shoot the first spike that walks by (at least we have a 3 point or better rule in Pa) but it's still difficult to get a big buck around these parts. Then, we actually had a 150 class deer running the area and one of the guys down the hill shot it at night the last day of rifle season. Of course he claims to have shot it during the final hour but a friend of mine saw it an hour after sundown feeding in the field behind his house so we know for certain it was shot illegaly. So this is pretty much what I'm up against.

RE: One of the best threads ever
Good read. I'm fortunate here that predators keep the deer numbers in check and the big country allows a few bucks to get old. Human populations are growing like madhere, new attitudesare moving inand I am concerned as to the effects that this will have on deer in the future. Hopefully the vast rugged country here will always allow some to grow old.

Great story! The author does a great job at conveying his families evolution of deer hunting and it sounds like theyre reaping the benefits. I know many of us have gone thru the same stages (some minus the baiting) and know what a great feeling it is to harvest a mature buck after passing on the younger ones.
